If you're struggling to get your First Job on Upwork, but you know deep down that you have what it takes to be a successful freelancer, then this video is for you. This is an Upwork Tutorial for Beginners, specifically created to help YOU WIN YOUR FIRST JOB ON UPWORK.
UPWORK INTRO - 0:00
I'm one of the highest earning and highest rated (Upwork Top Rated Plus) freelancers on Upwork with over $650,000 earned in a little over 4 years.💚➤➤➤ www.upwork.com/fl/joshuaburns
LEARN AN IN-DEMAND FREELANCE SKILL - 1:29
There are numerous freelance skills on Upwork. Basically, if a job can be done online, then it’s likely on Upwork.
FIND TOP EARNING FREELANCERS - 3:08
When identifying a freelance skill to learn or pursue on Upwork, I personally recommend searching for top-earning freelancers on Upwork with that skill. This can be such a phenomenal source of inspiration and motivation for you.
KEY TO UPWORK SUCCESS - 8:20
When choosing a freelance skill to learn, find a great combination of demand, earnings, and skill enjoyment. Those will not only lead to insane earnings on Upwork but also freelancer longevity as well.
SPONSOR: SKILLSHARE - 9:30
SHOWCASE YOUR WORK - 11:16
When an Upwork client views your profile or clicks on your job proposals, they are looking for examples or reasons why they should hire you to solve their problems and deliver on their project.
The main areas that you need to provide examples of your work that relates directly to jobs that you're trying to get on Upwork are in your Upwork profile overview, your portfolio section of your profile, and in your cover letters.
BE CLIENT-CENTRIC - 13:29
Your profile, portfolio, and cover letters focus on being client-centric. This means that rather than focusing on yourself, focus on what you can do for clients.
NON-UPWORK CLIENT TESTIMONIALS - 15:02
If you're a new freelancer on Upwork trying to get your first job, then definitely take advantage of non-Upwork client testimonials. Client reviews are powerful on Upwork and help gain client confidence.
HIRE A FREELANCER - 16:08
So what's the best way to become a client-focused freelancer? Think of something you need help with, post it on Upwork, and hire a freelancer.
BE ACTIVE - 16:49
The more time that you put into something, the more you get out of it. The more that you search for jobs that fit immensely well with your skill set, the better chance you have of obtaining your first job.
WIN JOBS WITH EYE-CATCHING COVER LETTERS - 18:10
NAIL THE INTRO CALL - 18:58
Introduction calls give you a chance to LOCK IN the client. Be professional, be positive, SMILE, and show the client why you're the best freelancer for them.
BE SELECTIVE - 19:45
The most successful freelancers on Upwork are also the most selective. The outcome of your first job on Upwork is the most important. You want to set yourself up for long-term success and build your reputation.
PATIENCE AND HARDEST WORKER MENTALITY - 21:09

@@umairmalii8667 Hi Umair, yes there is a playlist and I think it just boils down to how much you really want success. I forced myself to make time to watch everything and apply it as well. It takes plenty of effort, but worth it in the end. Here is link to the playlist: czcams.com/video/PTzJlrahqgc/video.html goodluck bro!

Josh, you rock! I had already tried Upwork over a year ago and gave up. I still needed to supplement my income, so I returned to it again a few weeks ago and came across your videos, and they were a lifesaver! After watching a couple and implementing your suggestions, I just got my first real Upwork job - and it only took maybe a week! I'm working on it now, and I'm so excited! I can absolutely see how I can make this work for me, and I'm so thankful for your tips and tricks! You and I graduated at the same time, and are in similar fields. You are my inspiration! I am putting myself on the Upwork track!!! Anyway, I just wanted you to know. I learnt quickbooks. I have this skill now.how to get projects now? You told me learn a skilll.i did it.
You will get my like, comment, and share every video of freelancing
you are doing great job Bro !
Appreciate that bro! 🙏
The worst part is when you know you can do the work, the proposals are decently priced, you write decent proposals, yet you write ten proposals and don't hear back from any of them.
It can really start wearing on your self-confidence.
Thanks buddy,
As an Android Developer I didn't got my first job for months.
Then I got to see your videos just day before yesterday and I implemented your tips in my Upwork profile and proposals, the next day I actually got my first job. This couldn't be any faster than that.
Thanks a lot josh.

@@umairmalii8667 Thanks,
Well, you should watch to his upwork series starting from how to complete your profile, then how to write proposals etc...
Hi Josh thanks a lot for the good content.Am new four months on up work always getting invited but all the invitations are coming with some assignment to be done before being hired and after submission of my work to the clients they don't reply again. Why ?
Hi Josh, your video are amazing! Thank you!
I wanted to ask something: I want to work as a translator and is it okay to translate "random" things as an example and add them to portfolio? By saying "random" I mean, maybe taking attached files from the old job posts (5-10 months ago)?
Can someone answer me please?
I would do it. My Upwork profile is new too, so I took some old recommendations I had on my LinkedIn and pasted them into my Upwork profile. I also sent a couple examples of my past similar work in the proposals I bidded on. I got hired on the first job that I sent the examples on, actually. My own humble, personal opinion is that you should add it. You can replace it with something else later, or with a real project when you get one. Or, you could always make your own Demo Project that you add to your profile. Good luck!!
Interesting; thanks for this video. :-)
You’re very welcome!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Do you do Fiverr as well? if not, how did you decide to use Upwork and not Fiverr? What's the differences?

How to post job?
Josh, as a client I wondered if you can tell me how long I should wait after I hit the "hire" button, before I give up on a freelancer to accept my job. I had great communications from a 5-star freelancer and then he suddenly stopped communicating with me 11 days ago. I decided he may be tired of communicating and wants to be hired or move on. That's completely fair. So I've paid my money and I'm still waiting 3 days later. So, how long should I wait and should I be concerned?
Hi Donna! Personally, 11 days is a long time and it sounds like they are either overbooked or not certain about taking the job. I would message them one more time and state that you will need to evaluate other freelancers if your job doesn't fit into their schedule. If you sent the offer 11 days ago, there's no reason why they shouldn't have accepted or at least messaged you by now.
@@JoshBurnsTech thank you so much for your reply. I know you are busy as well! I haven't heard from him in 11 days, but still offered the job 3 days ago. My job post expires tomorrow, so I was getting nervous. I am also always worried about being scammed. My first time to use Freelancer and I have other projects lined up. Thanks again!
@@donnaspakes2861 You're very welcome! If they have a lot of 5 stars reviews and great feedback, I wouldn't worry about getting scammed. Likely an issue with being overbooked. If it's fixed price, you will get back whatever you have in escrow if you withdraw the offer or it expires. If it doesn't workout, there's tons of other amazing freelancers on Upwork. 😀
Hi Josh thanks for your content it has helped me on upwork platform so far, but i have a problem winning projects during interviews please help😭. I can get an invite or write a winning proposal but getting the contract during and interview is becoming a problem i really don't understand what am doing wrong. Please help!!!!
Do we need to get on a Skype call or zoom call for interview?
Upwork can do wonders for you if you put in the work - some people seem to think that just by having a profile people will give you jobs though 😅
You're exactly right! It takes tons of time, consistency, and hard work. Freelancing is definitely not for everyone, which of course you know that very well. 😀
@@JoshBurnsTech not for everyone- but definitely for me hehe

@Josh Burns Tech thanks 👍
How am I supposed to showcase my work if I,, HAven't gotten employed by upwork yet??
You should have a portfolio before trying to get clients. It can be work you've done for companies or even personal projects. You don't need to have a work history to start creating a portfolio.
making my living on Upwork does sound like a dream
It’s pretty great!

Hi, Josh. Maybe you mistakenly wrote " $650,00" in the description.
Thanks! I corrected it.
I do not have the time to learn new skills. I have to get money within a month or else I become homeless (I don't have any friends to stay with)
Ok. I got my first 2 clients with 5/5 reviews. What's next?
Focus on getting more jobs and you will eventually find great long term clients, if your skill set support long term or repeat work.
@@JoshBurnsTech thanks!
