Here is my story according to the lyrics and the title:
The ghost is a girl who committed suicide/sacrifice her life to save someone, hence the line “If I get another chance, I would never give up the life that was dearest to you. I was dearest to you.” She killed herself, and she is the dearest to him. The line “the ones who gravitate towards self-sacrifice are the most selfish ghosts” is indicating her.
It is implied that both of them might be dolls with consciousness with the lines “your ball joint finger,” “our crooked seams,” and “I am half a ghost.” The title “ball jointed darling” is implying the guy. They are talking about ball-jointed dolls, which can look pretty realistic and can be posed like human beings.
Possibly, the doppelganger mentioned is also a doll that looks exactly like her. The guy might have made the doll to replace her, which is why she says, “Looking at my doppelganger, I feared the day you’re free of me may never be near.” She implies that the guy will not be able to let go of her easily. At the end, she chooses to stay with him until so.
I actually think that the ending is the opposite.
"So I'll make sure it'd be a long time before I'm with you". I think this is actually saying she let go of him, leaving so that one day he could let her go finaly.
But maybe I'm stupid and missed something

my boyfriend killed himself half a year ago. i cope with it by listening to mili, "bathtub mermaid", "a turtle's heart", "RTRT" and "salt, pepper, birds, and the thought police" remind me of him. especially a turtles heart. its about a girl whose partner is dead, now they are kinda lost and sad and they end up saying like "are you proud of me? i've made it that far, i'm still living without you, but i'll love you eternally". now, mili uploaded dancing ghost's ball jointed darling, which reminds me of his perspective. i often imagine how he misses me and still loves me up in heaven and still guards me from up there. it makes me feel so happy, but also kinda droopy and sad, but this song gives me such magical and vivid vibes. thank you, mili.

So if I got this right, the ghost did something for her love that ended up killing her, and now, who knows how much time later, she's happy that he's giving a new relationship a try? Also it seems by the end she can't really remember him.
Your feelings staying alive longer than your memories sounds pretty adorable tbh, if also horribly tragic. Also love when a Mili song has a hopeful ending.
Edit: Oh right, forgot for a moment there that this was made for a novel. Maybe that'll provide more context for the lyrics? Either way, on the website Mili is listed as in charge of the music, not just the theme song, and anything they make the soundtrack for is something I want to try so there's a new thing to be excited about.

With a line like, "If I get another chance I'll never give up the live that was dearest to you," I thought her cause of death was a suicide. That and the fact that she was selfless in life but ended up being a selfish ghost makes me think that she didn't care about her well-being at all in life and only realized that her life was worth living once it was gone. A whole sort of someone being suicidal because they don't think their life is worth anything but also someone who's helping others because their wellbeing is worth more than their own. This behavior continues a bit after her death as well, as she's happy to see the person she loves with someone else and is cheering him on from the side lines even when it makes her sad and cry.
Another interpretation could be that she didn't die at all, and her doppelganger is more of an act that she's put on. Certain things make me think this theory might be true, like her only being half a ghost, referring to it as a facade, the fact that she has a doppelganger exactly like her in the first place. The end of the song implies that she'll meet up with him again in the future, which could mean that they'll meet up in the afterlife or that she'll show her true self to him in the future and no longer be half a ghost. The metaphor is that the ghost is someone's inner self, genuine self, while the doppelganger is an act she puts on. She goes from watching her doppelganger dance with him and just being excited that they're together, even if it's a facade, to wanting to touch him but can't, her hand goes through his, as if she wants to be genuine but doesn't know how, and finally to becoming half a ghost, a bit more genuine but also content to delay the meeting of her genuine self and him as he is somewhat content with the doppleganger (She says she hopes the reunion wont be near after looking at him with the doppelganger but she is also being a bit more genuine as she's now half a ghost). To sort of summarize it, she was in a relationship with him but wasn't honest or genuine and was too paralyzed by it that she retreated into herself. That being said he is clearly aware of this, as seen in the most selfish ghosts part. He is aware that her current behavior of her seeming so selfless is that her genuine self really cares about and longs for him, being a selfish ghost. So he may also be content with her doppleganger, as it's just another side of her and he is aware of her inner self and loves them both the same.
Overall, it's a more positive outlook as she's not dead, allowing a reunion and also more applicable to everyday life, as it's no longer about a metaphysical event like a haunting and instead about being more open with those that you love and looking after yourself for their sake. Best arguments for this and against the metaphysical interpretation is that she goes from a ghost to half a ghost, implying that it's more of a metaphor and less of her actually being dead as it's hard to go from dead to half alive.

Couple things to say:
First off, thank you Mili for filling my last seven years with incredible music that resonates so strongly with me. You've topped my charts almost ever year since I discovered you through Deemo. Every song you release is amazing and that isn't something I can say about any other artist I listen to. You guys are the best!
Second, about this song... this one hits way too close to home. Being in love with someone that is already in a "perfect relationship" is one of the most painful things that I've had the misfortune of experiencing three whole times. You imagine you being with them, but could never bring yourself to get in between them. So you settle for splitting the line between wishing them well and secretly hoping that you will end up with them in the end. It never happens though. At least it's never happened for me and every one of those three are still in that same relationship to this day.
I kind of pictured it as a wholesome song. They were in love previously but the ghost died in sacrifice for the alive doll, and now the ghost haunts their lover (the doll) in order to protect them. I think in the middle of the song the ghost like kind of possesses the doll and they share the same body for a bit or something? I don't know lol.

hmm , i think this song is a lot more bittersweet , while a lot of other songs (the first ones i think of are turtle's heart, nine point eight) have a more pressing and urgent misery , which is why this song leaves a sort of sad taste in the back of your throat instead of cutting off your air supply!

This songs lyrics remind me of a kdrama called ‘Hi,Bye Mama’ where this woman dies however she was pregnant and the baby lives. She becomes a ghost and watches her kid grow and her husband gradually get over her death and find love again however because she was always around the daughter as she grew, it made her grow up able to see ghosts as a toddler and put her in danger, as well as making it hard for the husband to fully let go. She’s given the opportunity to become alive again for a month to fix those problems and even permanently stay alive if she can fully get her life back again. it’s a really beautiful show
I want to give my thoughts to some of these Lyrics and what they could mean. I am not very good in bulding up a story from lyrics alone but I hope my puzzle pieces will help someone with decoding the story
The protagonist or "Ghost" was/is in love with someone who has already found someone else, which he seems to be very happy together
"Someone who holds you just like me" Makes me think they are a very happy couple but she wishes (or thinks) that she would be as perfect of a lover for him, as his new lover is, calling them her "Doppelganger"
The next lines show how she's isolating herself from him, dancing alone, only being in the shadow, cheering and wishing the best for him.
From the line "I reached out to your left hand, it went right through your ball joined fingers." I had the idea she might tries to make mannequins in the shape of her love or at least imagining them as him or maybe she wanted to grab a mannequins hand like her "doppelganger" did.
She also went for the left hand, while he reached out his right hand. Maybe it shows how she might be the opposite of the "doppelganger" Or maybe I am reading too much into it.
The line "The one who gravitate towards self-sacrefice are the most, the most selfish ghosts" makes me think she might has taken her own life. Maybe the self sacrefice was to give them a better relationship? I am really just tapping in the dark here
"Does it hurt to reopen wounds of the past?" Makes me think that the ghosts death did hurt the love interest deeply since they seemed to have had a past togther (Speaking about the polaroids on the wall representing mostly two people, both Blond like the ghost and the love interest)
"I am half a ghost" This line could come from that he remembers her again after she's died, while before he most likely forgot her in his new and happy relatinship. Being full dead as a person but living on in his memories.
"Looking at my doppelanger, I feared that the day you're free of me, may never be near. So I'll make sure, it'd be a long time before I'm with you"
I am actually not compleatly certain to what this could mean but it gives me a feeling that she decided to end her life, as she felt like a bother to his happy relationship. Only to be together again, when he becomes a ghost too, making me come back to the "selfish ghosts" line.
Her self-less act was to do make them happier together as she's seen herself as nothing but a bother to his true happiness
But the true selfish intention was to either make him regret chosing someone else over her or to stop her pain from the heartache
"I'll be your guardian boo" give me a few ideas. It could mean she'll be his ghost guardian, following him for his life. protecting him because she loves her
Or maybe for a long shot in the dark it could mean her death traumatized him so much, that he won't be in a relationship ever. Guarding him from finding someone else
I hope I'm on a good track but I'm not too confident with everything. Feel free to share opinions or add thoughts
