Completely agree with Darius; the time to move Marner was last season. I'd just let him walk for nothing if he won't move his no move; at least you get the salary back for other players that way. If they extend him it should be without a no move no trade so they can move on from him if he doesn't perform in the playoffs again. Continuing with this lineup and with that much of the cap paid to so few players is why they aren't advancing past the first round. They need secondary scoring depth or expect more of the same.

@@shaneturner1809 I don't think you understanding free agency at all. "Letting him walk". You have to know it isn't the Leafs choice. The player as a UFA as 32 teams you can sign with. If the Leafs don't resign Marner, then they use that cap space to find value in other players including UFAs. Since Marner has a NMC, and the Leafs are in a win mode, highly unlikely that he was/could be traded. Funny, how fans think its OK that they sign UFAs "from other teams" without compensation to "their" team but somehow if a UFA leaves "their" it's the management's fault for either trading or not resigning the player. Let's imagine Marner resigns with the Leafs for 12m....that might leave 1m for another forward and 1m for a Dman....total 14m. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: the only reason all this trade mitch talk exists is because of the order in which the guys were signed, him being the last one unsigned. the buds’ issue has not been a mitch issue - it’s been an issue of team identity, a collective lack of offense. personally, i think it’s a team mentality thing, which is why i would have preferred to see keefer gone last year instead of kyle. but you don’t trade a top-20, 2-way star like MM from a position of weakness like most of the media is insisting needs to happen. if the chief can’t get us to lead the division by xmas and mitch is putting up a point/game - then try to trade him maybe. but right now every team in the league knows about all this chatter. brad, for better/worse, just ain’t hearin it. all we can do is hope we don’t end up walking him to free agency and losing him for nothing - but if we get through ‘25, we will gain space from 91’s contract expiring and then - problem solved.

There is NO in season trade or deadline deal coming. That ship has long since sailed. Its basically if he walks they have 11mil to resign players they already have and if lucky maybe add a fringe AHL/NHL UFA talent like they been doing last 8 or 9 years. Or sign him have less cap space to sign fringe AHL/ NHL talent. And maybe with the 5 mil in cap savings maybe more maybe less ( probably less given the sweetheart deals with NMC they love to give out) they don't have to give away knies or any other good young player. This is the cost of destroying cap to coddle 4-5 players, That's the reality. Its not because Mariner isn't a good player, its because he represents the only of the core 4 with best chance of being moved for a good return and cap flexibility. People don't seem to realize that keeping him means locking this team in to run it back every year for AT LEAST the next 4 years.
So just imagine, instead of the proper rebuild like the fans were promised. The Dubas/ Shanahan dou decided ( like all other GMs before them) thought they knew better and decided cap schmap by tossing their plan out the window and sign Tavares to a mega deal just to extend a few play off dates. So not only has that deal cost Hyman among the stupid amounts of draft picks in "going for it", but could possibly cost Marner as well. Oh and what was Treliving ( because of his experience in the johnny Gudreau saga) brought in to do again?🤔

That tells Leaf fans that Marner could care less about the Leafs and is in it purely for the money which he does not deserve McDavid money. It shows how greedy this kid (28 yrs old) is and the fact that he never volunteers to play on Team Canada after being eliminated for the playoffs again shows how selfish he is. The old guy Tavares played for Team Canada this summer after being eliminated but I guess Marner's time is more precious to him than playing for his country.

But in no way will a Marner trade not happen - You simply tell him that you either go where we want to send you (a contender that wants to re-sign him) or I put you on waivers and you will be stuck on a non-playoff team and if noone takes you then you can play in the echl for a year and I get the 11 M to fix the forwards.

If he threatens he’s going to walk if not signed let him walk because I bet you if he sit a few games with no pay check he will change his mind. He has held a gun to the Leafs heads for way too long you either call his bluff or you’re going to be stuck with him until the end of the new contract. The only other option you have is to low ball the little prick with $7 million extension for 2 years with a full trade clause to any team of the Leafs choosing and then trade him. In my opinion, Marner has been their most important player in the last 7 seasons. If someone has to go, it isn't him. And you don't judge a player strictly by how many goals he scored. The only reason I mentioned Nylander is because he just signed. $11.75 million dollar contract and he is not as valuable to the team, nor is he the complete player that Marner is. I am not saying that he should not be on the team. But if Nylander is worth that amount, then Marner is worth at least that amount. What other teams pay their players is irrelevant to me. American teams typically can get away from paying less because of the cost of living difference between the 2 countries. And because of the media crap that Leaf players have to go through, the Leafs typically pay more. If the player even agrees to play in Toronto.
