- Ike bought a chopper mini bike frame from the mid 1970s for $20 while buying another car! Today we pair the mini bike chassis with a $20 yard sale Briggs and Stratton 5 horsepower flathead from 1973 and we have an epic rat rod vintage mini bike build! This is not a racing mini bike, nor is it an off road mini bike. This is a cruiser mini bike, designed to ride low and slow. What it lacks in performance, this mini bike makes up in style.

I built my first go-cart at age 12. The rear wheels and drive came from a push lawnmower. I removed the blade and installed a pulley on the shaft. It had a pretty good gear reduction. I remember those old Briggs&Stratton engines. I paid $5.00 for the engine I used on my go-cart. I made the frame out of wood. The front end and steering was the front half of a 20 inch bicycle.
My next project was putting a McCulloch 47 chainsaw engine on a 26 inch bicycle. It would go 32 mph. I finally got an old Cushman Eagle motor scooter with a shift level on the gas tank. I rebuilt the engine at age 13, rings, rod bearing. It would go 52 mph. I rode it everywhere. A car pulled out in front of me and I ran into the back of it. I flew over the top of the car and ended up in a ditch, no helmet. The driver thought I was dead, but I survived. My scooter didn't.
I moved on to cars. I built my first hot rod at age sixteen, a '55 Chevy. I rebuilt a '58 283 engine, new rings and bearings, full race cam, solid lifters, corvette valve springs, pop-up pistons, and installed a four speed transmission. My car was clocked by state police going 127 mph. I eventually got busted for bootlegging beer. I was hauling several cases of beer into a dry county.
My cousin was the judge. He stepped down from the bench to defend me while I learned how to shoot an M16 for Uncle Sam's war in Vietnam.
I eventually went to college on the GI Bill and became an electrical engineer, BSEE. I am now retired and drive slow, forget to turn off my blinker, and watch your CZcams videos. You fellas keep up the good work.
Oh that tinny clutch rattle....
Brings back memories of 10yr old me carving up farm roads....
This + every Monday = what we want.
Minibike Monday
three wheela Has a good ring to it haha
Needs a 1970's era "Sissy Bar" behind the seat!
**SISSY BAR**
And Hi-way foot pegs.
Came here to say this.
Yes indeed, this is a must
Man I was just getting ready to say that!!!
Easy Rider style !!!!!!
front-hinge that seat with a rear spring for shock absorbing ;)
Just about to recommend that. Like a true old school mini bike
V8 valve springs work pretty good
Chrome beehive springs off an old bicycle seat. Give your brother a call.
This too
The rake on the frame os perfect for it
That wasn't smoking, that was just clearing out the mosquitos!!
Those old Briggs & Stratton never die
no they dont
Good ol iron
They are American made to
"Got this nice table to work on" *radiator on bucket*
It'll be fine... Lol!
Just thinking that
Hey!!!! Don’t knock it with the negative waves man!!!!!
Altox better than what I have
What ever works homie lol.
I love this bike and engine combo! I wish we had a nice paved place to ride it :(
I have one of them carbs would you like to have it?
Old school haven’t seen one of those in years. We have a few of the 3hp engines up on a shelf.
Set the mini beach meet up!
Y'all should put a 70s style sissy bar on it!!
The 70s era helmet was a nice touch lol
Gotta go with a 70's "Easy Rider" build!! Fix the seat with a sissy bar!
Easy rider is all flashy tho, this thing's a Rat :)
True... Sleazy Rider it is!! LOL
So glad you preserved the frame the way it was, saw you rubbing it down and was worried you were gonna paint it , great job guys
When I was a kid in the 70's, my grandmother use to give me a JC Penny Christmas catalog . It was heaven . Yes it had mini bikes, go karts(some with bodies).
I Remember the catalog and I Still have it. And Still have the Duster Chopper Minibike my Dad bought me for my 7th Birthday (1972) I Still ride -- it Runs Great !! Dad got it from JC Penney Auto Department it was $149.95 and came with free helmet -- and one quart of SAE 30 oil was .29 cents!!! ( Still have the receipt and owners booklet also!! ) Check out my CZcams video of it!! Keep an eye out for one and buy it when you see one for sale!! Sure brings back the memories of the Good Old Days!!
Got same old brigs been on all my mini bikes since i was 16. Ps I'm 50 and still riding it. Love brigs!!
Put together a frame with a model N Briggs back in 71. Nabbed the engine from the local junkyard and bought the frame from some spoiled rich kid in the neighborhood. One of my best teenage memories. I didn't need drugs or booze to get high, just my minibike.
Fab a support to that strait pipe muffler. Reason? In a good situation, you'll just pull the threads out of the block. Worse case, you'll crack the exhaust port and trash the engine. I love these old simple mini bikes. Being 53, I cut my teeth on them when I was a wee lad. Great to see this old school mini bike breathing again with a vintage Briggs no less!! Cheers guys! Zip~
No expert here guys,
but, I am 61yrs. old, and lived the 60's -70's mini-bike craze !
Think your chopper should have a twin- spring shock system mounted to the seat plate, and there by leveling the seat !
No more feeling like you are falling off the back of the bike !
A pivot point at the front of the seat plate, twin spring shocks at the rear.
Plenty of photos available of your chopper frame with a level seat and sping shocks.
Let me know if I am incorrect on this one guys.
Very cool project for sure !
You guys should do more with briggs btw Briggs motors have a tendency to run the muffler hot enough to make them glow
reminds me of a mini bike and go kart mfg.i worked at .building new stuff from scratch....then firing itup.....then seeing it on the show, room floor..flexo.s...1966..7..8..9..godspeed.to the late founders.brothers ...jack and irv,...irving,,levey.....it was in los angeles..;;;keep up the mini restos you guys.......thanks for that spark...of my past....
with the mini bike and ikes classic cars in the background it feels nostalgic like im watching old home movies from the 70s/80s
That's bad ass guys. In 1968 my dad bought me a mini bike from J.C. Penney's. Thanks.
Trust me when I tell you, You will mind working on the floor in the future lol.
Truth.
I had a Briggs and Stratton engine exactly like that on an old mower..set the revs, let clutch out and simply walk behind..magic
Nothing beats the sound of a 5 hp flat head Briggs
When old lawnmower engines die and go to heaven
Oh this motor is 50yrs old... fires right up 🙌
This thing is awesome!!! I'd leave the seat, but I'd add a homemade sissy bar, but I love that thing!
Hell, yeah !! That iconic sound ! Just sad we are missing out on the sweet smell of B&S!
I'm older than that engine, this took me right back to a world long gone!
Why are you sliding off the saddle ? It's missing the COIL SPRINGS !!!
Disappointed you couldn't be assed to rebuild the carb.
New carb = not a rat
Ike on that reminded me of something....... I can get 70 miles to the gallon on this Hog.
Lloyd?
Hey Harry
I've had, rebuilt many Briggs 5 hp! Made several Mini Bikes! I Appreciate your Chanel! Thank You!
Haha, when I was about 8 or 9 my mom bought me an old minibike with a 5HP Briggs and it would take like 30 pulls to get it running. One day she decided that she wanted to ride it. She got it fired up, went around the house, and the throttle stuck wide open and she sailed at full throttle into the row of bushes that we had along the one side of our house. Then she bought me a newer one with a 5 HP Tecumseh and it ran mint.
loving the vintage stuff...keep it up
My very first mini bike I got about 1969 was an ARCO 5hp Tecumseh chopper with chrome fenders! Of course I bypassed the governor (used a paper clip to replace the spring!) then I knocked off every other fin on the flywheel to lighten it up (balanced? HA!) The seat was hinged on the front with shock/springs on the back. May be why yours is so slanted? Did about 45mph flat out!
I had the exact same engine just sold it for 20$ cause I got my predator but seeing y'all mess with the Briggs makes me want mines back 🤣
I have one that I need to get running, but I don't know where to get an oil cap for it.
I need a welder and a grinder then I’m set for life! 👍😂
John, Isaac, it is SO refreshing to see you using
antique Craftsman ratchets. They are ALL I use.
(Daily.) I even brought 3 into work, when I was
hired. Work had a POS Craftsman "stainless"
ratchet, which is the original POS of all time.
steve
Awesome build!!! I have two great ideas for that bike. First a banana seat with a sissy bar. Take it from a bicycle make it wider( have to cut a V out of the middle). Second. Add a fishtail exhaust like from a Harley Davidson. It is time period for that minibike.
Time to take a break from school and watch some c and c haha
perfect timing
Thank god these guys are in with go power sports as a sponsor I used them for parts on my first bike could not find the wheels I needed but go power sports had them🤙🏻
My dad and I built a mini bike from scratch when I was young. It had a 5 hp BS engine from a cement mixer. The wheels and tires were trailer size. The frame material was electrical conduit pipe. It had a Mercury centrifugal clutch. I had to put a disc brake on it later because it was pretty fast. Fun times!
Back in the day this is exactly the type of minibikes I was riding and building. A 1973 engine would have been way out of my reach as I couldn't use a new engine on a bike. I do still have a few of these old BS engines that are great runners. Thanks for the great job and memories guy's, this was a great buy...
Those old chopper based mini bikes have always been my fav. I've always wanted you 2 to make a modern take on the old school chopper mini. Maybe this bike can be your inspiration? I hope so...
every time i see that 1970 camaro my eyes melt with love
Love it. Back to the roots, budget builds that anyone could do :D
Alot of people might fuss about the straight pipe and carb but i think its cool and perfect and something that someone would do to there mini bike in the 70s
Tot-Rod is an awesome name for the other project. This is cool too though. I'm glad you kept the patina.
You cannot beat the sound of an old flat head motor
Quoting Isaac, this engine, 1973, is older than me.
Ike, I was in high school then, and had sold my
first engine rebuild before then.
(Oh, still LOVE the channel!)
steve
I love the old school mini bike builds.
Nice to be back to your roots
IKE really needs give us a tour of his cars, I saw some bugs that haven't been mentioned, where waiting Ike, your a full time tuber, where waiting? Lol love you guys!!!
Check out his CZcams out he has three walk around videos
I miss videos like this. I have around 20 mini bikes, but it's the ones like this that I like the most. Not necessarily vintage, but old beat up and cobbled together mini bikes. That's what it's all about for me and what I ride the most. I went through a show bike phase and they just collect dust
You've built some Wicked Rides, but this is COOL AF!
Every time he puts on that helmet and rides it reminds me of Super Dave
I forgot about that guy thanks for reminding me
If 73 is older then you, you are a kid in my book. I was 20 in 73, and I love you kids are still into my kinda toys.
I'll double your money, $80, final offer!! 😂
Everything about that bike screams "ikes childhood"! So cool!
This is the content of the oldschool C&C when the hussle was real...... welcome back gentlemen welcome back!! GREAT VIDEO. Perfect content. Perfect length. All around grade..... (IT'LL BE FINE) in my book!
Now that's true straight pipe exhaust.
I have a lawn edger with a stock original 3.5 hd Briggs. To get it running 17 years ago I pulled the coil and points out, put points cover back on and replaced the coil with a used mag from some other Briggs engine. I also replaced the oil, gas and spark plug. That is all the work I have done to it. I can go outside and start it right now on the 2nd pull. I should add that it is a 1968 engine. Briggs good.
Just in time to watch you guys build something awesome.
I was working in a small engine shop back in 1973 after school.. Replaced a lot of points back then!
Another awesome build guys
That's a super cool little project
So glad you guys have a cold cut saw
Neat !
Mini bike...done !
Now its time for a Motorcycle..!
Make sure that you get that fuel line away from the engine or your gonna have a bad day
Nice work. Looks exactly like my old Taco. We called them tacos back in the days.
So cool... I love the old school build!
You need a seat and back rest like you see on some old school choppers with the big tall back rest.
You guys find the best deals! Nice job on that bike!
I had the same motor in my mini bike as a kid. Brings back great memories!
I am an Old Timer. There are rotator valve caps made by Briggs which made the valves rotate when they lifted. One of the problems without it the valves always stay in the same place and do not wear as well.
Thank you for the great content
Love these older builds
Turns over engine with the spark plug out, "It's got compression!"
you can tell by the noise...
@@roguetorino that's bs there's no way you could.. only real way is to use a gauge
Built Futures or just put your finger in the plug hole, or just listen for air to push out while you turn it. There’s a lot of ways to test for compression
He had his finger in the hole
He saw air coming out
Grassroot cars and cameras episodes like this are awesome!
Awesome build guys... Thanks, for another great vid. 👍😎🤘
love these old school briggs engines! this makes me want to rebuild my Deathtrap! a stripped down 50cc scooter with a briggs, turned into a trike with a Toro lawnmower rear end and no seat, it was fun haha
Greetings C&C's and all the best for 2020. Love the builds and whoever is doing the production & editing of the vids . . . brilliant. I have had a rather unique project in the plans & development stage for months now which for me will be far more of a "tool of necessity" than a toy and having watching dozens of your vids looking for ideas (many of which several times over), I don't recall any "crawler" style builds. Perhaps you could lend some helpful direction particularly in the suspension department, I would truly appreciate that. Thanks in advance and on behalf of all the fraternal members of my "F.D./E.M.S." family, thank you both for continually reiterating the importance of being safe in your endeavors . . . John
Thank you for making this video I was building 1 for a year and I just needed the seat and i was done i rode it like 5 time but my tios house caught on fire and he exploded bc it had gas in the tank but everyone was ok I just miss it he was happy building it with me bc he wanted to make 1 when he was small and that was on his bucketlist
PLEASE do the minibike meet! A bunch of us from Michigan will come!
Reason why I subscribed to this channel because I love engines.. and the way they fix and Mod the engine
A new carb for that model is like $16 on Amazon...a much better vintage look. Keep up the great work...love the videos.
I was in my friends neighborhood hanging out and we found one of these engines out by the road to be trashed. brought it to his house, got gas in it and it ran great!
Change the log type seat out to a 1 person saddle-style!
And I think the engine placement _looks_ ok
i kinda dig the stinger looking exhaust pipe hanging out there
I had one of those engines on a go kart, but it was a 3hp Briggs and Stratton. I'm 20 years old not old by the way. It sure was fun.
That metal corkscrew was actual added to help mix the fuel. They had issues in he early 70's when they first started introducing unleaded fuels to the market with lower octane rating. Was a "power adder" LOL.
Love it guys! I decided to build a little street cruiser also. It's a Western Auto Texas Ranger. I'm putting a raptor on it and selling the original hs25 and all its parts. The engine runs but I can't have fun on a 2.5 hp. Lol
just in time for my lunch break!
i love how there is always good content here!!
Is fun fixing these engines even though can buy whole new one for not much dough, wow pretty neat 💖✨
That looks like a J C Penny golden pinto . they came with shocks on the back of the seat down to the back of the fram it would be cool to see it back the way it was .keep up the good work thanks.
Have you guys ever thought about doing a head to head build challenge type thing? Maybe you each start out with a maximum budget and you have to either salvage or buy used parts from craigslist or something like that. Then after a time limit of a few days or so, your bike/kart/whatever can be judged based on various criteria by an impartial third party or maybe a viewer poll. There's a channel that does this with building computers called Linus Tech Tips, and I think it would be cool too see you guys do something similar. Either way, it'll be fine :)
Thank y'all for putting that video of you guys will never know what this video means to me seeing that minibike... thank you fellas...
You can tell the date of a Briggs by its “code”. the first two numbers are the year. the second two numbers are the month, and the third set is the day. If i had an engine with code # 6707201, it would have been made July 20th, 1967. This code was implemented in 1965, so this will work with any Briggs made after 65.
That exhaust is perfect.
That thing sounds amazing!
Mint little build👌👌👌
One of my top 3 favorite vids from ya'll, thats awesome
Correct exhaust for a minibike is always a straight-pipe! Nice job; now do a valve job and rings, hone it, port it, open up the valve clearances. Get the parts off EvilBay or from a good scrapyard snowblower engine, cheap.
