    Welcome to my Austin Mini Mayfair 998cc Automatic restoration. This project car was bought from e-bay in July 2020 for the sum of £4000. My intentions are to carry out a light restoration and make the car the best it can be while keeping it almost completely original. The end result will be a time warp back to 1984 and the car will look like it has just left the showroom.
    This Mini Mayfair is rare in that it has only covered 12,000 miles since new, only 330 miles per year! The shell is almost completely rust free and has never been welded or had any panels replaced.
    In this update, I strip down the front hub assemblies and we look at the subframe now it is back from powder coating

    Nice content Keith, buy good quality new stuff rubbers etc, the old ones could easily give up after a couple of months driving whereas even a poor quality replacement should last a few years at least.
    I wish you and yours a Happy New Year 🍺

    Hey kieth, if you can make a paper template then you could make your own with a roll of foam, I would like to do some more sound insulation

    On that bulkhead deadening piece I would look at spraying it with a surface sealer. Something like Jenolite or Rustoleum (there are many) to get a waterproof coating on it as its so original. Replacements are just not the same.
    If you do choose to replace it I would like to make a bid for it.
    As for those hubs you are right - having gone this far its a false economy to not fit new hub bearings and swivels.
    That rubber piece on the drive shaft you were wondering about?
    The P/n is 37H8706 and retains the shaft to the CV joint end against the shoulder and fits as well as the circlip detent P/n 17H8597 in the end groove. This is the same on all rubber coupling, Hardy Spicer and Pot Joint type driveshafts. The only difference is the Pot Joint type also has 37H8706 and CDU1563 rubber circlip on the Pot Joint end.
    So a car set for yours is:
    4 x 37H8706
    2 x 17H8597
    2 x CDU1563 (Replacement P/n)

      I'm always amazed by you knowledge! The rubber O ring CDU1563 was missing on the other side and exactly as in the description on the Mini Spare site, the splines were rusted so I will be fitting new ones. I will look into the sealers, seems like a good option

      @@1chish We definitely have something in common, I love a good spreadsheet LOL. I keep a detailed spreadsheet on every car and when it comes to work I'm lost without one :)

    The subframe looks mint, I might have to go down that route with my future projects, ps I am a bot

    How do the rubber bits look on your other two cars? that could well influence the way you go. On a kind of golf related subject, well more non Mini, I hit 1275 miles walked for the year today!

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  Před 3 lety +1

      Wow, that's impressive mileage for the year, although thinking about it I've probably done half that searching for lost balls LOL. All the rubber I used on Vini only lasted 2-3 years although when I replaced them the second time I coated them in rubber grease which I might try again.

    You have time for golf? Obviously just not working hard enough on the mini! 🤪
    Have you heard if LtoB is on in 2021?

      @classicminiworkshop  Před 3 lety

      Hi mate, it's brake cleaner. I get through gallons of the stuff. Very useful for cleaning and degreasing.

    Hi, sorry its a question about your da polisher. I'm looking to buy one for my piccadilly which is new painted but will need final finishing and polish. I found the same duren da polisher with pads etc for £109.95. Are you happy with yours? From what I seen on your post it worked very well?
    Regards
    Ray

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, I've been very pleased with it. I would say that its not quite powerful enough for the 150mm pads. You can use them but have to work a bit slower. I only really needed the 150mm pads for the roof though

  • @paulrobinson3528

    Bearings? i would have cleaned up and greased, discs i would again cleaned up, keep the gaitors as they will never split ( best rubber you'll ever get, my 62 will keep them) but replaced the pads and hose's. If it aint broke..........don't fix it. Me?, i'm always wary of fitting new stuff as its probably inferior Chinese poor quality!

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, completely agree. I'm always wary of new stuff. In the end I ordered everything and will just use what's needed. It wont harm to have some spares in stock.

      @martinsgarage2791 Před 3 lety +1

      Completely agree with Paul, if this was a daily car and putting on lots of miles I might change some bits but with the miles this will do I would keep the original stuff. M
