The Matthew Robinson & John Yorke years was the best era Eastenders ever had in my opinion. It’s never hit those heights since.

“Every story should have a beginning, middle and end” something the writers at EastEnders NEED to remember and start applying!

How does his book and what he talks about apply to fiction writing, but not on a screenwriting context (so basically short story and novels writing)?

@@hfvales, I am a novelist and it seems to translate very well.

I've started listening to Opening Lines, Radio 4, and really enjoying the insight and clarity of John's discussion

Great points. Anyone wanting to see how exposition should be done should watch the first fifteen minutes of Serenity. The movie had to bring new viewers up to speed on the events and background of the TV series without boring those who had seen the series. There's a dream within a recording within a flashback followed by Mal walking through the ship. Every brief exchange with his crew tells you who they are, what they do and how they relate to each other, and everything they say feels natural. The rest of the film is pretty good too...

I'm most of the way through. So far, it may be the best book on writing of the dozen or more on my shelf. It is easily up there with Story by McKee, but more approachable. A must for any author.

Sorry, what's his book called? I've got 'Writing for television series, serials and soaps' by Yvonne Grace which is brilliant but could certainly do with another one :)

By theses standards -- true though they are -- Erle Stanley Gardener for Perry Mason, and and the writers of The Philadelphia Story, for stage and/or screen, would be dead in the water :-)
