The executive producer and head writer of Doctor Who and co-creator and executive producer of Sherlock, Steven Moffat, talks about how, where, when, what and why he writes. bbc.co.uk/writersroom
The man is fantastic. A shame so many have hated his tenure on Doctor Who but he has created some of the most iconic who episodes ever and after 12 years on the show is just drained. An inspiration to an aspiring writer
Great interview. And he's spot on about writing...I write in exactly the same fashion; unfortunately, I don't get paid for my writing, but it's still something I *have* to do!
Just the best writer I've ever seen. Love how you just keep a weeping angel in your garden. I'd be terrified to walk through that at night. Must give your kids nightmares.
We have six minute episode TV. It's called Anime. 3 minute recap, 5 minute intro song, 6 minutes of actual show, 2 minutes sneak-peak of the next episode, and a 10 minute credit/outro song
The BBCWR need to run a Dr Who script competition. I've written several while on tours of Iraq and Afghan just to pass the time. Who better to appriase them than the Beeb, or even Steven himelf? Seriously, I am under no illusion that they're good enough. It'd just be nice to have someone cast an educated eye over them and I know such submissions aren't allowed officially.
And the man was right. Louis CK released a series Horace and Pete last year where no episode matched the others in length. Of course, it wasn't a TV series but online and available on his website but the quality of writing and production speak for themselves.
His last comment about scheduling, he's completely right. I don't watch Doctor Who on TV, even when it's 'on' - I watch it on DVD at a time of my choosing. Just like one would a movie. In the near future downloads may replace DVDs but the timing considerations won't change.
They use my aunts work place in Caerleon (Newport) all the time. She once said that as she left the office to go home, she saw a foot and freaked out. Realising that on the same day, they were filming doctor who. I'm not really a Dr Who fan but just think it's pretty cool :)
0:01 Have you ever wanted to- have you ever had a dream where- do you ever- have you- do you- have you ever wanted him to do you so bad you could do anything? :)
Future television will reflect our crippled intellects and attention spans. Like in the movie Demolition Man, adverts tunes for cereal will be considered art.
"Your bookcase doesn't tell you when you can read, why should your television tell you when you can watch." - I love that!
The writer's block quote is honestly inspiring. What a great guy.
I really enjoyed this interview. Steven Moffat has such an engaging style of writing, he makes you want to become a writer.
"Write what you love" and "don't care what others think". Brilliant advice from moff.
Common sense
I love this man so much

Cheers Steven. Always appreciate your candour and insight.

"How do you develop your characters?" For Doctor Who I keep them for three years if I like them.

He has a similar way of talking to David Tennant, aside from both being Scottish.

it's all so awful, the lot of you fucked it up - let the Doctor rest and be a hero in our imagination and our dreams, and leave him alone.
'executive producer and head writer of Doctor Who and co-creator and executive producer of Sherlock blah blah ' - utter sycophant
