What this video doesn't mention in regards to 1984 is that the Pats signed Fryar THREE WEEKS BEFORE the draft, because they were worried that if they waited any longer, he would have joined Young, White and Walker in the USFL.
I have always said that Cleveland quarterback was named Couch because at the end of each play he had at least 3 people sitting on him.
Billy Sims is such a tragic story. Could've been something special, fuck injuries honestly.
RBs take a lot of damage. Especially then.
If they had morden medicine back in the 80s he'll last a few more years
Frrrr I was sad 😭
Bo knows....his pain
Detroit is cursed, you hate to see it
Billy Sims was a huge star back in the early 80s. He had a lot of talent and people expected him to be a hall of famer. Like many other running backs injury cut his career short though he was still really good in the pros as well as college.
It's kind of a good thing that running backs have become so devalued in recent years, since most have such a short shelf life that it now seems absurd how often they used to be drafted in the first round.
@@ryanjacobson2508 NFL used to be run-oriented then. It gradually moved away with the West Coast offense being adopted. The CTE scandals and the resulting rule changes have made RB's irrelevant in a pass-heavy league.
I really wish they had ACL surgery for him (Simms), as well as Gayle Sayers and Bobby Orr!
Not really public knowledge until 1990s, Mickey Mantle played his whole Career with a Completely Torn ACL and partially torn MCL

@@datonemf2862 2 different players I believe?
@@Austin.Kilgore that would explain it
thanks man
@@datonemf2862 no it's Keyshawn KeeSean was Sammy tho
Its nice taking a look back at all the drama that has happened in the draft these past decades
Bledsoe was underrated in my opinion, had a great arm and won a lot games.
A man named Tom Brady is to blame for him being underrated
Couldn’t win games that counted. Tommy did. That’s how
Winning that one Super Bowl vs Green Bay would have maybe kept Tom Brady era from happening.
Hey, MO
@@ryaj2356 pretty much 🤘
What a great video, very classy how you found some positive comments about every player. It would have been easy to call a lot of them Busts. Instead you did your homework and found REAL Reasons why some players failed and others were successful. GREAT WORK!!!
It's also a great look back at forgotten players like George Rogers who had great stats over time but never made it to the SB. All these guys IMHO were worthy of being the #1 pick but injuries were the ultimate arbiter of greatness.
What happened to every first round QB since 2000
That would be a great video
They already did a video on that
@@fadeojo8902 send me the vid
@@Packerfan5827 it's on the channel, just look it up
Y’all I just looked it up and it ain’t there y’all are liar’s
“After a historic rookie year, his production would falter”
RB’s man
Look at the mileage some of the RBs have on them by the time they get to the NFL. It's sad that some of them only get paid for a year or two of the amazing football careers that they dedicated their lives to.
@@ryanbender7005 💯
Unless it's bo Jackson nobody will be a top 5 rb draft pick again remember Cadillac Williams and Ronnie brown both went top 5 from same college which will never happen again also
Also, being a great running back ironically means that you will get more carries so you will end up breaking down even faster. There's only a small number of RBs that produce reliably into their 30's.
I love yall this channel is the new NFL films for me I grew up on that. To me this is the digital version of that the content here is so nostalgic. Always excited every time y’all upload on god 💜.

So rure
Drew Bledsoe #11 baby! Miss that class act of a guy. Mans man with a cannon!! He certainly was fun to watch! Much love Drew!
DREWWWWW
Peytoooon Manning!! So hated and doubted, but the fans definitely loved him. One of the greatest of all time.
Peyton is the GOAT IMO. Marino is the most underrated of the greats. Championships are too much of a team effort to just be the deciding factor on greatness of a QB.
Right now there are exactly 18 comments on this video, and on this commemt
Who hated or doubted Peyton manning?
@@thebrockman12 yea he wasn’t hated really at all. Maybe some doubts about the postseason performance I guess.
Never doubted by anyone.
A Saints fan here ... in 1981 we passed on Lawrence Taylor. It still makes me weep.
@Fries Lawrence Taylor is a generational player tho
If Tim Couch had a proper supporting cast, he has the potential to be a solid or even great QB IMO.
Getting drafted into an expansion team is rough.
He put up solid passing numbers for what he had to work with. Would have loved to see him on a better team.
If Jeff George would’ve had a Mike Holmgren or Andy Reid coaching him, I think he would be one of the all time greats. He was out relying on his arm too much. They never taught him football.
@@KTF0 see also: David Carr
That's true for a huge # of players in NFL history. Bernie Kosar, Barry Sanders, Archie Manning, Steve McNair, Michael Vick, Randall Cunningham, etc, etc.
I've met Billy Sims he is so nice and owns a bbq right down the road from me
Calling Tim Couch a bust is a misnomer. He was a talented QB. Maybe not MVP level but talented. He took a horrible roster to the playoffs despite his injuries and almost beat Pittsburgh to boot. He had what it took, Cleveland just screwed up.
Going to that expansion roster doomed him from the start… butch Davis’s “gut feeling” to start Holcomb after couch brought us to the postseason the year before was the nail in the coffin.
Couch and David Carr were in a "no-win" scenario, had they been drafted by better teams or with better support, the sky is the limit on their careers.
His QBR was well below average even for the day. Yeah, you could say Cleveland sucked and didn't have good skills position players, and you'd be right, but he put up 1970s numbers in a much more pass happy late 90s league.
Holcomb was the one who almost beat Pittsburgh.
Bust
Watching Bo Jackson push Ronnie Lott back might be the most "that guy's different" moment ever.
As a life long niners fan i agree 100% we all know lott was the one laying dudes out.
Also see what he did to Hard hitting Steve Atwater

Could you do something on every Mr. Irrelevant? Some had surprisingly relevant careers.
I remember there being a 30 for 30 short about John Tuggle who was the last pick in the 83 draft. He went on to be named special teams player of the year by his teammates after his rookie season, and even got a decent number of carries and receptions as starting fullback after injury sidelined the starter. Sadly, he was diagnosed with cancer and never played beyond his rookie season. He died just a couple years later in 1986.
@@snerdterguson What a tragedy
@@christygruber2283 Yeah. Pretty awesome storyline. That makes an even bigger need for a video on every Mr. Irrelevant.
Irving fryar was a beast - one of the most solid, underrated players of the 80's/90's - he was great on every team he was on
And went to Nebraska
I forgot about Irving fryer. He was honestly solid too
yeah, Fryar was the truth
Drew Bledsoe, wow. Too bad he'll always be remembered as the Willie Pep of the NFL. He was one of the NFLs best for a little while there
Wally Pipp
Good to hear u back to work Mr. Voice over! Much respect for you sir. Look forward to hearing you more. #1 Draft pick of voice over for the N! F! L!!!
Interesting story, my parents where married in late December of ‘86. And their honeymoon was spent in Dallas, Tx. they apparently got to witness Bo Jackson hit his 1st Home-run as well as score his 1st Touchdown!!!
Steve Emtman was one of the most dominating defensive lineman you'll ever see in college football. Try watching some of the 92 Rose Bowl game vs. Michigan. He dominated the line of scrimmage. Michigan couldn't block him with two players. The first of several knee injuries in his first season at Indianapolis derailed what would have been a dominate, HOF career.
back when Washington was bigtime
Yeah he was basically JJ Watt before JJ Watt. It’s heartbreaking how his career was derailed by injuries. One of the best college defenders ever.
I remember Irving Fryar; he was an amazing WR--very underrated but did well to last 17 seasons with a touchdown by 19 different QBs! Are you kidding me?!? 😳
That's Scary Terry levels of idc what qb i got
Jeff George looking 46 years old on draft day 😂
I didn't know who the old fugg was in the intro video holding the Pro Set cards.
Jeff George was the Whyy Trash version of Brett Favre
I Like Troy Aikman Quarterback Dallas Cowboys Number 1 1989 NFL Draft Picks Become Team Of The Early 90s Dynasty ☺😎🏈 Thanks For Uploading
Fun fact- 1984 1st round pick Irving Fryar, and 1985 1st round pick Bruce Smith were both on the 2000 Washington Redskins team. Pretty impressive considering the fact they were both in their late 30's. Also, Andre Reed was 36, and Darrell Green was 40.
Awesome video. Love seeing these players
Drew Bledsoe never got the love deserved for how good a QB he was
1:29 - RIDER KICK!
That was better move than any run barry sanders every had ans was cut short due to injury wow
So many legends.
Thank you for including the clips you did for Elway and SB XXXII.
as a packers fan we played our worst game and almost won
Keep up the great work man I love these videos👍👍🔥
Can’t wait for the regular season preview of this voice. So relaxing and terrific
Still baffling to think of the haul (or lack of) the Colts got for Elway. Especially compared to today's prices. 🤷🏈🏈🤷
The rumor in Phoenix was that John's father(Jack, a college coach), didn't want John to play for Frank Kush. Kush was a legendary and controversial coach at ASU and made some enemies before moving to the NFL. Those Kush-Arizona State teams were excellent and full of future NFL players. As a father, I'm not questioning what another father decides for their son, just adding to the dialogue.
The Colts were atrocious in the 80's and early 90's. Nobody wanted to play for them.
Tim couch had so much potential
No cap I never knew Drew Bledsoe had thrown for 4,500 yards in a season with New England. 4500 yards in the 90s is insane I was born in '97 so didn't see much of Bledsoe but I always thought he was just average at best. This man really in the top 10 yards in a career that's wild
Bledsoe was good he was just overshadowed by Brady
I hear mark felton productions music during Irving fryer. Lol
@Fries no idea the name. Just watch the beginning of any “mark Felton productions” vid and then watch the friar segment of this. Hard to miss.
Who would of thought in the Tom Osborne offense that a wide receiver would become the top pick of the nfl draft that's impressive
@Fries Keyshawn didn't play college football at Nebraska, so Fryar
@Fries fryar not Keyshawn
Would have, brainless
It’s amazing how highly valued running backs used to be. Today it’s considered to be just a dime a dozen position and it’s extremely rare for a RB to even be drafted in the first round let alone the #1 pick!
Irving Fryer was one of my favorites. Fun to watch everywhere he played.
Well Tom Brady Happened to Drew Bledsoe… and jets didn’t draft Marino lol.
Mo Lewis and the jets
Lotta teams skipped Marino because he's on the pot! (He wasn't. Newspaperman lied or was misinformed)
This is a great video idea. Have a great evening😁
This is a certified hood classic
Love your channel! Would you do brady vs manning matchups?
5 players - Elway, Bruch Smith, Aikman, Pace and Manning got inducted to the PFHOF. Too bad that Bruce Smith could not get the ring while four others got it...
Bo Jackson could’ve been so great if it wasn’t for injuries
*If he only had todays medical technology*
4:51 - Is that Mark Felton Productions intro music?
I finally get to hear more of the song. Lol
Billy Sims is one of the best runners to play the game, I don't care how long he played. There are few backs in history that were truly special to watch and he was. When Sanders was selected by the Lions, it felt like Sims got a second opportunity in a weird way. Like a spiritual successor. He's the guy you forget about because of Sanders, but he was truly something with the rock in his hands.
If only he didn't throw himself around like an asshole so often. He was a ticking time bomb. A bad injury waiting to happen. Special talent, for sure... but some of finishes of those runs were just dumb.
Sorry to hear of all the players that injuries took out. Who knows how they could have been if they had stayed healthy?
5:34 I'm sure its happened, but thats the first time I've seen someone spike the football outside of the endzone
It’s crazy how times have changed. You would never see a running back go first overall now
@Fries RBs have really short shelf lives. Plus modern drafting is based on data analytics which prove that teams should not spend high draft picks/a lot of money on RBs since they are not reliably valuable.
Not even in the First Round
1995 KiJana Carter is part of the reason you don’t see it anywhere
Bo was worth a seventh round pick even if all he ever did was truck Boz. Worth the pick just to have that play in your teams highlight reel.
Looooove these kind of videos.
"Thank God the Saints took George Rodgers," NYG with the second pick in '81.
Fryer is NOT the only person to score a TD in 17 straight seasons as Jerry Rice caught a TD in every season he played.
Yo I remember getting those Bruce Smith shoes, they were fire.
Irving Fryar is one of the best late bloomers of all time.
And was a nfl reciever in the Tom Osborne Nebraska offense
Throwback with bangers
A little more info on how their careers ended would have been nice. But this was a fine video. Thumbs up.
Bo easily the most exiciting football player of all time
8:52 y'all didn't have to do Vinny like that lol. The music made me think it was gonna be a highlight
I hope this channel does the same for all the #2 overall picks through out the years
@Fries yea thats why a video would be interesting
@Fries I would wait until the end of this season to pass judgement on Wentz
I completely erased the memory that my Colts drafted Elway. That put a frown on my day. Imagine what that might have been...
I will never forget Elway’s dad chuckling about Colts “Earning” the first pick while John threatening to play with Yankees because baseball is played in spring when asked about not wanting to play in Baltimore weather
he would have played for the Yankees if the Colts hadn't traded him
Vin Scully announcing Football is legendary
thanks for taking my suggestion 😄
Need to post some of the drafts from the 90s!!!! All the drafts posted on the channel are after 2010
It's funny how Billy Sims wasn't penalized for stepping on a player but Antonio Brown was
Because during this era they barley had penalties. Now days it's like the hole game is controlled by Referees.
1:30 The original “HURDLES…KICKS A MAN!!!”
The era of good draft picks
Lol what are you on
Billy Sims was gonna be a HOFer. Such a shame. Had his injury happened in today's game he might've returned the next season and been even better.
This guy deserves a lot more attention, he has some good clips and his commentary is on point👌🏽
Y'know this is an official nfl channel right?
“This guy” 😂😂😂😂
@@TheCjbroncos25 ''Now here's a guy who deserves more attention and recognition.''
The guy on the official NFL CZcams page. He's going places.
Why didn’t they mention why Bo Jackson refused to play with Buccaneers for costing him college eligibility
My boy Aikman came outta UCLA a golden boy ..Irvin had already arrived
help was coming in the form of emmit in 90...But those first couple years were BRUTAL!!!! Including that1-15 trainwreck...So when they finally clicked those were some sweet times never to be seen again in Big D... Billy Simms was the straight up TRUTH Gerry curl and all...Just ask Barry Sanders...
After every entry, my quote: "Geez! I remember that guy!" At the end: "Geez, I remembered all of them... :("
The Lions fumbling GOAT-level players since 1980
Seems like that was a great era for #1 picks.
Very few true busts in that group. Usually if someone did bust it wasn't his fault, it was just because he kept getting hurt.
WOW !!! When Billy was running the thing that was going on in his mind was " Ah Judo, Ah Judo a chop, chop, chop !"
Jeff George had one of the smoothest throws.
You stopped right before....Michael Vick. Lol.
You're not a smart person
The Billy Sims play reminded me of Mario climbing a flagpole!
Elway’s career is always summarize by his 3 AFCCG games against the browns and then the 3 super bowl blow outs, following the 96 upset to the expansion Jaguars which lead to back to back super bowls into retirement but we forget he retired with the most wins which means he also has double digit wins or playoff appearances in 84,85,91 and 93. Those teams were also very thin in talent outside of Elway until his last 3 seasons, they had a few pieces throughout his career but never a roster like the 49ers that Montana had in the 80s
The era where you couldn't really go too wrong with 1st overall picks...
Surprised this wasn't mentioned, but I wonder if the Saints regret picking George Rogers over Lawrence Taylor.
@Fries True.
Ughhh as a browns fan, as soon as I saw elway, I knew what the highlight footage was going to be 😞
Bledsoe was traded to Buffalo
Tim Couch had one of the greatest arms in NFL history in this day in age he would have never went to a team like that Cleveland browns teams I'm not blaming the brown they had just restarted the franchise but you can only say what if? Different team under different circumstances he would have been one of the greatest of all time I truly believe that
Kentucky great
Billy Sims was GREAT in Detroit.
Lions had NO offense from time Sims retired until Barry Sanders got there ---- & Have had no offence since then.....
Is it just me or were sports a lot better in the 90s.
Although he likely won't admit it but tough guy DB Ronnie Lott biggest nightmare is watching Bo Jackson with the ball in his hands and a full head of steam coming straight for you. Believe me Bo knows !
Bobby Boucher 13:53
God bless you guys
0:20 is that Baker Poverty Mayfield 😂😂😂
Bo Jackson is a super human. I saw him play against the Broncos and he was clearly the fastest player on the field.
Jeff George owns a Dairy Queen in my hometown where I worked in High School.
Irving fryer underrated, feel like he should be more known
Bo was so powerful he ran out of his own leg
1:25 One of history's most entertaining first downs would probably get flagged today. Too unnecessarily rough!
Dru B was great, but his 1st quarter play equaled his 4th quarter, good or bad, he never elevated. TB came in, and his first 4 games 1-3 quarters were crap. Then every time his 4th quarter he snapped mentally into a freak. As a NE fan, we knew the future pointed to TB after game 4 of his first starting season.
