He did this live, but not for long because he felt he didn’t get a great feedback from the audience. He could always tell how they reacted to a song he did. There is another song he actually talks about too many words in it. Can’t remember it vi heard it on Elvis’s 1970 marathon album on the Elvis In Nashville album. It’s his recordings of all these songs and the finished product before anything is added shows off his voice beautifully and the sessions are funny. Thanks so much again. 😊😊❤❤❤❤

A song that I adore Seph - so much so that it is my ringtone on my mobile and has been for quite a few years - so glad you liked it. Anoter example of how good this album is!
The penultimate track on the excellent 1970 album "That's The Way It Is" was "The Next Step Is Love" a song which describes the carefree feeling that the beginning of love in a relationship can produce. It was recorded by Elvis on 7 June 1970 at RCA's Studio B in Nashville.
The process to get the final RCA master was not quite straightforward though, and a listen through the recording process shows that even the most gifted in their craft can still struggle at times. Elvis struggling to get the phrasing just right in two particular points in the song but bit by bit with some determination fixes them one at at time. By the time of take ten, Elvis manages a complete take with one of the points sorted and then by the next take in addition to a tweak to the intro, the master is achieved. Throughout the process however, Elvis' frustration is evident but is still determined to get it right and the end result is superb with Elvis' vocal so relaxed he is almost horizontal!

The co-writer for The Next Step is Love is Paul Evens. Paul also co-wrote Elvis’ I Gotta Know and Something Blue. Paul’s best known songs are probably Bobby Vinton’s Roses Are Red My Love and Helen Shapiro’s No Trespassing. The Next Step Is Love is an Elvis original, with no versions by other artists. Here is Paul Evan’s demo used to present the song to Elvis for consideration. czcams.com/video/TT-3du653NU/video.html

Seth, your Beatle reference was spot on. Just came across this: “The Next Step Is Love” stepped out of the strict country agenda, matching a well-crafted tune with a curiously overreaching lyric (“We’ve yet to taste the icing on the cake that we’ve been baking with the past”); with its Beatlesque production (in the midst of a batch of American roots music!) it was the most un-Presleyan cut on the sessions.”

  • @ethandrood
    @ethandrood Před měsícem

'Yesterday I slipped away as the sun was (is) welcoming the evening shadows of a perfect day.' I think Elvis had trouble getting these words out. He did have a slight speach impedement and stutter. In the film Fun in Acapulco, he struggles to say 'Coca-Cola'. And in the On Tour 72' out-take interview he has trouble with the word 'Choreographer.' In the Dylan song Tomorrow is a Long Time, Dylan clearly sings 'If today was not an endless highway,' - whereas Elvis bunches the words together in his version, so it sounds like: 'If today was not 'in this' highway.' All part of his genius and charm, I think.

Elvis reinvented himself to follow the hits of the time, and release the songs from his new, very successful tour in Las Vegas. The public and critical success was so great that it generated a film of the tour.

OMG Seph a Triple Banger 💣💣💣 💯 agree with you - I absolutely love this song especially when you listen to all the takes of the song and hear how Elvis was struggling with some of the phrasing but he eventually gets it to how he wants it to sound and was spot on. It sounds like a lovely fun, happy pop song (and does have a Beatles vibe). I am sad though cos there is some great footage of him rehearsing this in That's The Way It Is that really goes with the song - much prefer seeing him singing than just the audio. Paul Parnes up first: B. January 12, 1925- D. August 24, 2017
Paul Parnes is a writer and composer who, with Paul Evans, wrote several popular 60s pop songs, including the Elvis Presley tune "The Next Step Is Love." Parnes wrote "I Love a Waltz" and "Two Heads Are Better Than One" for Sesame Street and supplied music and lyrics for the albums Getting Ready for School and Big Bird Discovers the Orchestra.
Parnes also wrote dialogue for several children's record albums, including one featuring Jay Ward's Bullwinkle Show characters.
Paul Evans Info second up: Paul Evans (born March 5, 1938)[1] is an American rock and roll singer and songwriter, who was most prominent in the 1950s and 1960s. As a performer, he had hits with the songs "Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Backseat" (his biggest hit, recorded with The Curls), reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959), "Midnight Special" and "Happy-Go-Lucky Me".
Evans had a sizeable hit in the UK and Australia in 1978-79 with the morbid country song "Hello, This Is Joanie" (as it was titled on the New Zealand pressing released by Polydor Records) or, as it was known on a Spring Records release, "Hello, This is Joannie (The Telephone Answering Machine Song)".[1][2] In a 2004 interview Evans revealed that the voice of Joannie was provided by country artist Lea Jane Berinati.[3]
Evans also had minor hits with "After the Hurricane" which hit No.2 on April 8, 1961 on Vancouver's CFUN chart, and "Feelin' No Pain" which hit No.23 on Canadian CHUM charts.
As a songwriter Evans' songs were performed by numerous performers, including Elvis Presley, Jimmy Dean and Pat Boone. His most successful songs were "Roses Are Red (My Love)", which was a number one hit for Bobby Vinton in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100; and by Ronnie Carroll in the UK reaching no. 3 in 1962; and "When" a chart topper in the UK Singles Chart and #5 in the U.S. for The Kalin Twins.
For more info Wiki link here for anyone interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Evans_(musician)
Interesting Side Note: Paul Evans & Paul Parnes were a noted songwriter duo back in the day however there is no mention of that on Paul Evans's Wiki page.
And that is all I've got for this one- I think anyway!

Hmmm. .. to rank this song over songs like "bridge over troubled water" and "suspicious minds"??? To be honest, it's one of the few 70s songs that i DON'T have on my playlist! For me it's a bit boring, the instrumentation sometimes weird , but the biggest point is, that in this one i somehow can't "feel" him. But i must say that i often can't understand your rankings. In your "A" rank i don't like "memories" and "suspicion" either. On the other hand I like for example "I'll be there", "Memphis Tennessee" or "release me" (and some other ones)which you all ranked "E". From the "D" section i would rank "only the strong survive", "reconsider baby", "take my hand precious lord" and "Danny boy" at least "B"... What can I say ? Tastes are different.... 😉

I'll say about this song..... It's sweet, but kinda schlocky AM radio style. I don't dislike it but it's I guess high grade filler.

Decent song. Not one of his best, but Elvis delivered a brilliant vocal performance. It's got a Beatles / Penny Lane kind of horn section. It goes in the Top 150-200 range.
