- Identifying a Plant is very important in gardening because without knowing a plant by name, you cannot search for its care tips, specially for beginners. SoTodays short episode is on Schefflera or Umbrella Plant - which is another addition in PLANT IDENTIFICATION playlist. We will quickly learn how to care schefflera plant and also the best method of propagation of these plants.
The Schefflera plant also called commonly as the umbrella tree or the dwarf umbrella tree is a popular plant and comes in many varieties. This is the plant I recommend for beginners in gardening because this is a very easy to maintain and easy to care plant. Just remember few important care tips and you are done!
There are many different botanical varieties of schefflera plant like Arboricola, Actinophylla and so on.
The commonly grown house plant is Arboricola what we call as Umbrella plant or umbrella Tree. This is actually an evergreen Shrub or a small tree with a woody stem. It comes in two varieties, plain and variegated as you can see here.
One Interesting fact about this Umbrella tree most of us are unaware is - please follow the video for more.
Best method to multiply this is plant is through air layering method. You can also grow schefflera plants from cuttings. You might need to dip into rooting hormone powder and things like that. Woody or semiwoody cuttings can also be propagated in water.

I just bought this plant from nursery. It's so beautiful and yes it's easy to care. Come to watering i only water if the pot is light weighted when i lift it. I just water moderately, sometimes i fill little water in the bottom tray for it to soak. Too afraid of overwatering. Mine still small plant so i put them under light in my custom made l.e.d bin

Here in Australia that plant grows like a weed, this plant is also a native to Australia and it also can grow extremely tall and big

I love to watch your tips for gardening. I got this plant 1 month ago earlier it did well but suddenly it's leaves started getting brown and eventually fell down. Now I have only the main thick part in the centre. I don't know what it is called actually but I have this no stems at all. It might look dry but it will be viable inside. Always wait for 45 to 60 days for rooting even if it looks dry.

Thank you for the wonderful video. I have a schefflera that is very old and quite tall. The trunk is twisted in a kind of spiral. There are no leaves on the lower part of the trunk. Can I air layer this woody trunk part? And if I can, will the trunk then get new leaves. It's very difficult to do anything with the trunk so twisted. Thank you

My plant was doing AMAZING under the edge of a large oak and was getting dappled sunshine most of the day. It was thriving! Then we had a week of rain and the drain holes got clogged and it sat in water for days. It wilted, the leaves turned brown and it slowly lost every leaf. I researched and it said to remove every speck of wet dirt from the root ball and use your fingers to remove any yucky residue on the roots and to sit the exposed roots into the fresh air with bright indirect light for most of the day and the replant in fresh soil and a clean pot. I did all this but it has not recovered.😞 I am lightly watering it and keeping a close eye on it and still praying it will eventually spring up some new growth. Have you ever saved one that was on the decline?

Hi, if it’s non variegated green leaves, you can keep indoor near a window to receive bright indirect sunlight.
Any Variegated leaves plant needs good sunlight.

saatim toru / sayatoru/ satim gaas/ umbrella tree/ schefflera are broadly similar. But the one u ask of is saatim toru or gaas in bangla or umbrella tree in english. Actually it's not same as u're seeing here now. Your one beside roads are big tree with sweet smelling white flowers shaddy tree.

How long should be the cutting?

Yes if you cut the top growing end you can limit it’s height but width will improve by more branching sideways.

Any Variegated plant needs more sunlight than non variegated . Because they have lesser chlorophyll.

I have one but the leaves are always falling off. Is it because they are making room for new growth? I received this plant damaged so I was doing everything to help it. It has tiny flies so I spray it with a mixture of vinegar, a small amount of dish soap, and water. The bugs still come but not as much. Will neem oil eradicate the bugs? I believe that my plant is thriving because I have a lot of tiny leaves growing. Can you let me know what to do. Thanks
Neem oil helps. Also try repotting in a fresh healthy potting mix once it develops few leaves.
GARDEN TIPS I repotted with Natures grow organic and water reserve potting mix last month. I just saw one of your videos I believe my vinegar, soap mixture ratio wasn't enough. I'm going to try your solution trick for the flies. Do you believe the leaves are falling off to make more room because I have a lot of baby leaves growing?
New leaves growing is a good sign and allow it to grow more leaves before doing anything else on the plant.

Sir, my scheferela plant is under stress. I have lost almost 80% leaves of my plant which is about 2 feet height. My plant leaves had black spots which gradually increased. I cut the leave and again other leaves start blackening. I put fungicide too. But couldn't not stop this. What was the problem sir and what should i had done before?
Prune as much affected branches as possible and keep in shade for few days but make sure there is good air circulation around the plant. Donot water, dig 2 inches to check moisture and then only water but not full watering, just keep moisture. Hope for its recovery!

Nobody ever gives the exact instructions how to water your plant. This kind of plant and you didn't either. You say not to water it and get it soggy. So when do you know when to water it and how much
