- When you think of footballing legends, few stories captivate like that of the Lisbon Lions. A team born and bred in Glasgow, led by the visionary Jock Stein, who conquered Europe in 1967 and transformed the landscape of World football. But how good were prime Celtic really? Let’s find out!

By no means an exaggeration when I say Celtic at that time were probably the best football team in the world.
The only regret during that period was that Celtic had the chance to win 2-3 European cups and create a proper legacy similar to that of Ajax. The team were good enough.
Prime celtic still beat in 71’ 4-1 for the league cup 🇧🇪 the lisbon lions were special and its an incredible achievement for the scottish game 🍀🏴
By winning the European cup with all the players coming from Glasgow and surrounding area, Glasgow Celtic done something that will NEVER be repeated. A fully unique football team.
This team are immortal. The catenaccio was killing football, and it had to be defeated.
As a bluenose, this Celtic team was really something special.
You failed to mention they had over 40 attempts at goal in the final.thats a shot at goal every 2 mins..big JOCK STEIN greatest manager ever ,he TAUGHT CRYUFF, FERGIE etc.and they used his tactics and passed them on to PEP and the rest .
Its crazy that celtic 2024 won against Manchester city💀
I was blessed to be a supporter during these seasons , The LIONS would have destroyed any Celtic side from 1980 up to now , no fkn joke .From , The GLASGOW CELTIC man , Johannesburg , South Africa .
They were exceptional . The best British club side between 1965-66 and 1973-74 . They so very nearly made it to that Cup Winners Cup Final in 1965-66 and to those European Cup Finals in 1971-72 and 1973-74 but for Internazionale and Atletico Madrid . They had incredible strength in depth in that squad . STEiN was able to see and use all the formations that I can possibly think of . These were definitely copied by AJAX . STEiN would have been a fantastic manager of a UK team , say , at the World Cup in MEXiCO in 1970 . It is a reflection of GLASGOW CELTiC that the following players would have AUTOMATiCALLY been in that side .. EG .. BANKS or JENNiNGS : jARDiNE or REANEY ; 'Tam' GEMMELL ; MULLERY or BREMNER ; ENGLAND , McNEiLL or John GREiG ; Bobby MOORE or George CONNELLY ; JOHNSTONE or Charlie COOKE ; Bobby MURDOCH ; George BEST ; Bobby CHARLTON ; Bobby LENNOX .. remember substitutes were allowed for the first time .. jiMMy JOHNSTONE starts all games .. imagine the opposition facing up to a forward line of JOHNSTONE , BEST and LENNOX with them all rotating and attacking on the ground from central positions - nightmare ..
class just pure class
the semi finals against leeds was so amazing i think they were complacent in the 2nd final but yeah the Bhoys from Glasgow in the east end did us more than proud
So proud of them and my club
67 was before my time but it makes me so proud to think that Glasgow Celtic, my team, the team I support, were the first British club to win the biggest prize in club football. I think for a very short period between 1967 and 68 they probably were the best team in the world, and should have won the world club championship.
Great achievement from a great team and a great club 🍀
winning the european cup with all local players is the greatest achievement in the sport imo ☘☘🍀🍀
Yes we won every competition we entered but Dundee United who finished 6th in the League actually beat us 3-2 both home and away proving perhaps that sometimes no matter how good you are or what system you play there will always be teams who you struggle to overcome.
One of the greatest club sides to ever do it. Changed the way the game was played forever!
The best celtic team I ever saw and they entertained they could and did beat anyone
The Bhoys won it even before the left the tunnel. Berti Auld started THECELTIC SONG in the tunnel and the bhoys a ALL joined in. Then as the emerged u u can see Jimmy JINKY Jonston, s tell Inters full " Ur in for a nightmare". As Jinky points at him and also tells him him "I'm turning u inside out". GREATEST achievement in football bar none. One player from Aryshire, the rest are all from Glasgow. Unreal, Will never be matched. C.
