  • HoverGlide is a 'floating' backpack that will reduce the weight on your shoulders. It's a convenient and lighter way to hike, travel, and run without feeling your backpack move at every step. The HoverGlide also aims to help military personnel, first responders, and students.

    • @arjunnava
      @arjunnava Před 5 lety +122

      Your not entirely correct. It reduces the forces created by the up and down movement, which would also end up pulling you up and down during running. For instance.... You just jumped really high and landed and are trying to get up. Without the bag, it's just your weight.. with the bag, the bag has its own inertia and gravity pull forces.. so you need to use more effort. In contrast, this frame should reduce that drag, reducing energy required by you to get up.. now put this logic into place every time you bob up and down while running and you will likely feel a lot lighter. (Sort of like suspension logic in cars.. reduces stress on car frame). Technically weight is just the amount of force exerted by gravity on an object. So if reduces that force during movement, then it's essentially reducing weight.. atleast temporarily.

      That's because it probably is. Kickstarters can't show you a perfect working product in their advertisements. If they already had a completed product, it wouldn't be a Kickstarter would it? (Unless mass manufacturing was the issue). No bag would stand so perfectly still. It would have slight up and down shaking on its own because the two frames and elastic coupling themselves would vibrate under the forces and diffuse a bit to the final frame and bag. It's meant to reduce forces.. not eliminate..

    Anyone who has ever served in the military and done forced marches can look at this for a split second and already see the massive benefits... The weight of a backpack when I was in the military 83-91 was around 65 to 95 pounds... When you got that thing rock'in, it wasn't uncommon for it to be up to twice the load force that would be coming down as you tried to go up... It was a nightmare..
    For those who did Air Assault School like I did, you would've definitely appreciated this bag during the forced march testing needed to complete air Assault training.. ;)

    It's not the fall that kills you. It's hitting the ground. Much like how a slide hammer works for pulling metal. As long as the weight inside the pack allows a floating motion and the runner stays in an upright position, all is well. If you do a modest jump, or the weight is too light or heavy. I feel the resulting slamming of the weight at end of travel, could cause a spike in forces that may be harmful.

    Very skeptical. Not just about whether it actually works and whether it actually does what they claim it does, but also about whether, even if it does work, the effect actually offsets the extra weight you are carrying around in form of those rails and the elastic bands and all that. Also, the sensation of having that thing wobble and bounce around on your back like that, seems likely to me to cause strain and an extra expense in energy due to constantly having the feeling that you might lose balance and have to counter balance.

    I'm really looking forward to hearing from reviewers if it lives up to the hype and is superior to current favored trailrunning backpacks (Six Moons Designs, etc.) I've always liked external frames and am considering a modern lightweight one for my next pack (Vargo or Zpacks). But having some "anti-shock" stabilization could be very nice if the weight penalty isn't too severe, and perhaps broaden what is possible with a heavier backpack.

    This is a great concept. to alleviate the shoulders by resting the weight on the hips while using the shoulders to keep it up right is probably the reinventing of the wheel, aka backpack 2.0. I'll get it when I see it for sure.

    Its False and misleading that it reduces the weight by 86%. It only reduces the downward force exerted by bag while running. however you are still carrying the 100% weight of the bag. it is definitely helpful but claiming it reduces weight by even 1% is false and misleading

    • @siege3624

      Would be more accurate to say it reduces the impacts of the bag bouncing up and down, which do put alot of strain on the body. Don't know if the added weight will be worth it however.

    • @herbderbler1585
      @herbderbler1585 Před 5 lety +11

      nehaal kadge weight and mass are not the same thing. The mass is not reduced, but the weight is absolutely reduced. There is no functional difference between weight due to gravity vs. weight due to acceleration. Standing on Earth experiencing one G of downward pull from gravity is precisely the same as experiencing one G of upward acceleration. An accelerometer measures both phenomena in exactly the same manner. Reducing the downward acceleration of the backpack against your body is quite literally reducing the sudden increases in apparent weight you experience while running or jumping. Your body bounces up and down as you run, while the packpack continues in a more or less straight line, meaning it always remains right around 1G instead of sharply spiking with every step. Your knees and back will perceive no difference between this and a backpack that magically reduces its mass in short bursts coinciding with every step.

    And what happens when your pack gets significantly lighter as you use up the contents like food and water? Then it's at the top of the rails smacking the stoppers right? That in addition to the need for the user to correctly load the pack slider elastic for the specific weight of their pack, tells me it will probably fail as a product. It's definitely not going in the military any time soon. The environment would probably clog that thing up in hours.

    We could recapture the motion mechanism to convert into energy to recharge your phone battery 🔋 and other accessories. If the motion energy is not enough then it’s possible to convert your body heat to absorb thermal energy and better than that new flat light weight flexible solar panels as an additional backup, it would be a better combination at least for now.

    This can't be lighter. I mean your body is still taking the weight of the backpack. You cannot magically change physics.
    I do however see that it may reduce the inertia faced by the wearer during running, which may cause a reduced fatigue. But it's definitely not lighter. (Unless you don't fill it with anything. But I still doubt that. The mechanism itself should weigh a few tens of pounds.)
