      True, I've been disappointed that not one of the many people I've seen reacting to this have commented on Count Basie. Usually they just say something like "wow, he's even got his own band" (speaking of Sheriff Bart) but fail to recognise the Count Basie name and pick up on the joke. Maybe I'm just a lot older than I thought... 😆

    One of my favorite bits that no one seems to clock: Gene Wilder's Jim is the first (only?) one to use the non-pejorative word "Black," and Cleavon Little's Bart says, "Yes, we are" with sudden gravity and seriousness. Since Jim is just as smart as Bart, it underscores the main point of the film: racism and racists are stupid.

    • @coldwhite4240
      @coldwhite4240 Před rokem +17

      He's not the first or only one. Hedley Lamarr uses the phrase "a black sheriff" in a simply factual way when talking to the governor (and possibly elsewhere, I can't remember. It's been a while since I saw the whole film). In fact, there's no evidence that Lamarr himself is racist - unlike the gang of thugs and the townsfolk, he never utters the N word or other slurs (that I can recall), and he's willing to have all kinds of nationalities in his gang of villains at the end - but he's happy to use the biases and prejudices of others for his own ends.

      It's even more loaded than that. Bart's voice lowers because he's anticipating trouble. In 1973 when this film was made, "black" was still a touchy word. It had been an insult not that long before, and black people had reclaimed it in the 60's. But it had become tangled with the Black Panther Party, who were accused and tried for a lot of heinous krap they never did, and so the word was in a delicate, difficult position. If a black person used it, fine; but if a white person used it, it was up in the air what they meant by it. So Jim is careful and polite when he uses it, and Bart is cautious and prepared when he answers. (That's why Jim's response to his answer always got a laugh - not only was it funny but it broke the tension of the moment, one of the few serious moments, if not the only one, in the whole film.)

      @@coldwhite4240 Yeah-Hedley isn't a racist per se. He's the type who considers everyone useful in terms of his ability to take advantage of their weaknesses in order to further his own gains. Honestly, I prefer the outright racists to people like him. At least with outspoken racists, you know where they stand. Better to have someone with a bat and torch in front of you than to have someone like Hedley standing behind you with a knife.

    This movie is so stuffed full of jokes, it's ridiculous, but a great many of them depend on knowing the time it was made in, and on knowing old movies. But here's one joke that's pretty good: everyone in Rock Ridge is named Johnson because they are all... johnsons. (As you can tell by their behavior.) Another thing about those names is that every Johnson name you hear was an actual person. Gabby Johnson was an actor who specialized in just that kind of character. Howard Johnson was the founder of a chain of ice-cream parlors. Van Johnson was a famous movie star of the 50's. And speaking of Western stars, two of them are referred to: Richard Dix played bad guys ("Remember when Richard Dix tried to take over this town?"), and Randolph Scott (* takes off hat* RAN-DO-OLPH SCOTT!!) played good guys. See, the movie is crammed with that kind of thing.

It pays to know that in 1974 there was a national restaurant chain called Howard Johnson's, the largest such chain in the U.S. throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
