As a 70 year old white guy, I'm glad to see you guys laugh at this movie... When it came out we knew that the racism was the joke.. Mel Brooks was a genius.
Exactly! Back then people understood context. They knew there was a difference between a good guy using a racial slur and a bad guy using it. They understood that the characters using those words in this movie were supposed to be stupid and racist. Now too many people are so hung up on what words are being said that they ignore the context of the scene. The black characters in this movie were never the butt of the joke.
The beautiful part about this movie is there wasn't a single race that WASN'T insulted. Blacks, Whites, Oriental, Jews, Germans, Southerners, Irish and So on. Back when we could laugh at ourselves.
We can still laugh at ourselves...when it is done right and not under the guise of hate. All the racist people in this movie were stupid. It is one of the best comedies of all time.
Fun fact: Slim Pickens who played the villain's henchman in 'Blazing Saddles' also played the Air Force pilot who rode the hydrogen bomb like a rodeo in 'Dr Strangelove'
He was an awesome actor who was in many movies, I loved the line in this movie when he said, Hey I know you, your that N****R that hit me in the head with a shovel, I laugh every time I think about it, this is an era when comedy was comedy and I'm Truly sad we are where we are today, One person gets offended by something and it gets cancelled, Shows like Archie Bunker and the Jefferson's wouldn't last one episode today, Sad isn't it.

Cleavon Little was the sheriff character. Prior was Mel Brooks’ choice but this was in the hey-day of Richard’s partying and legal troubles. The studios simply didn’t want him at the time. A shame to be sure but, IMO, Cleavon was probably the perfect choice 👌🏻
Most folks aren't that familiar with Little because he's mostly a stage actor. IIRC, this was his first movie role. Wilder gave him a lot of pointers during the shoot.
I'm surprised that Cleavon Little didn't become a household name after this movie. I remember that he was in a hospital sitcom on ABC called "Temperature's Rising" in the mid/late 70's, but not much after that. He was a funny guy for sure.
I love that Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks wrote that together - brilliant combination, my Dad showed me this movie when I was about 7! Best education ever for a wee white lad in the UK...
I was watching it with my mate 30 years ago !. He is black and I'm Irish. We was laughing all the way through but my mate loved it when they said " we will have the Jews, we will have the blacks, but we don't want the Irish" hehehe. We both were laughing . Sweet revenge for him after all the black jokes. 😂. Comedy is the best.
It was a historical reference. There actually was a time when there were signs in store windows in America that said "No Irish." EVERY new immigrant group in America goes through this in the early days. When that group has the misfortune of being easily identifiable by looks it never ends.
Back in the day, me and my stoner buddies would watch this movie over and over again. We could quote all the lines. Also "Up in Smoke". Blues Brothers and Caddy Shack. We always had great lines.

There is a big difference between today's ideals and those from the 70's. I think Mel Brook idea was that if you wanted to make a mockery of racism, you had to portray it. Today, it would be portrayed in a sterilized, suggested way, and the "moral of the story" would be like an after school special. Personally, I think mockery has more of an impact.
Trivia: Westerns were still a big thing when this movie was made. The producers didn't think anyone who worked in that genre would go along with this spoof so they never asked. They put an ad in the paper looking for a singer who sounded like Frankie Laine, who sang a lot in westerns. Mr. Laine responded to the ad and got the job. He never knew he was singing for a western spoof.
THIS is why your (son’s) generation needs to see this movie. The point of the whole movie is to show that racism is bad and stupid. It’s just instead of getting angry and hoping to reach people by yelling at them, this movie does it by being funny and memorable and over the top so you’ll think about it.

You guys nailed the purpose of the movie. There are a bunch of lines that "younger" people will never get. There used to be a weekend sport show called "The Wide World of Sports" that was extremely popular. Also, there was a comedy duo from the black and white era named Laurel and Hardy. Lots of obscure (for today) references.

The Governor is the lead writer, and director, Mel Brooks. Mel was born in Brooklyn NYC in 1927. Being a Jew growing up in NYC Mel knew a thing or two about ethnic bigotry. Gene Wilder, the Waco kid, was in a few of Mel’s movies.
Having seen this when it came out I absolutely love seeing people, both Black and White reacting to this these days. Hard to believe it came out 46 years ago now, but I know LOTS of people White and Black consider this one of (if not ) THE funniest movie they have ever seen. I saw this first time in 1974 one day, then took 4 or 5 different people to see it again the Very next day. Even now knowing the upcoming lines, people damn near gets stomach aches from laughing so damn hard at it. It's genius on so many levels --- mostly lampooning every stereotype you can think of and in every way. Thank you Mel and Richard for your parts in making this brilliant flick. Peace !!
I can't see anybody remaking Blazing Saddles today. It truly is a one of kind movie. A remake would not hold the comedy weight like the original did. It totally annihilates racism as being completely ignorant, and stupid. I remember watching this the first time back in the early 80s when I was just about 10, and I could understand what it did to racism even then. Great video, loved watching you guys enjoying the movie. You should watch Young Frankenstein if you haven't yet. It is another great Mel Brooks classic comedy.
My siblings & I loved History Of the World, Part I from 1981. It was the heyday of video store VHS rentals and for the 6 of us, this was one of our picks along with Airplane & The Warriors.
I saw this in the theater with my parents. Everybody laughed so hard during the beans scene you couldn't hear anything. I watched the director commentary with Mel. He said Richard Pryor wrote a lot of Mongo's lines. He wrote, "Mongo is pawn in game of life." So many quotable lines. And I remember how cool I thought it was of Mel to have Bart riding by The Count Basie Orchestra in his Gucci outfit.
I've never seen this movie but have heard about it over the years. Kind of want to watch it now after watching you guys laughing so hard! No way would this movie fly today! Thank god for classic comedy though. Nothing held back in the name of COMEDY. Patrice O'Neal once said something like "the idea of comedy should be a room with 100 people, 50 people will be laughing hysterically and 50 people completely horrified." That is how comedy should be and that is how comedy should stay.
Blazing saddles is one unique piece of comedy movie. Never would have thought before that the American industry would push one like that out. Different times. Superior art.
This movie and Animal House along with Porkys the first one were the most I've ever laughed at the movies. The Western genre has never recovered from Blazing Saddles. Thanks fellas for the trip down memory lane.
Guys, you REALLY need to check out another Mel Brooks movie that came out that same year. It's 'Young Frankenstein' and it's just as funny - Gene Wilder is the lead. If you've not seen it you're in for a treat! 😉👍
If it wasn't for Mel wanting Gene in this movie Young Frankenstein might not have been made. He agreed to be in the movie if Mel would be involved in his screenplay.

You should see the whole movie, without all the segments left out. It actually was written and produced and acted by Mel Brooks. He always pushed the boundaries, but if you saw it all, he makes so many brilliant points. Mel Brooks also wrote and produced and acted in a Broadway show called, "Springtime for Hitler", with a dance line of SS Nazis. The man is brilliant he has likely has not a racist bone in his body. I don't think Blazing Saddles should ever be re-made. There were some really wild and crazy parts to this movie which were left out of this compilation. He even has Chinese work crews, a western saloon lady entertainer patterned after Marlena Ditrich, with a German accent and some really risky lines. She falls in love/lust with the sheriff. I am sure you have seen the whole movie by now. Mel keeps it real and makes some powerful statements against racism or any kind of prejudices.
Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder’s chemistry was UNMATCHED. But I have to express my disappointment that you guys didn’t let the campfire scene play out all the way through 😂 it’s a legendary cinematic moment
My favorite part of this movie is when their signing up to invade the town Gene Wilder dressed as a kkk dude pulls Cleavon from around the rock and he says "Where all the white women at?"
I saw this film when it premiered in a New Jersey theater. The audience had a ratio of 60/40 in favor of blacks. The laughter throughout the movie was non-stop and LOUD. By far the hardest I've ever seen an audience laugh. After the movie people were still laughing hysterically. No brawls, no shootings, no threats, no demonstrations and not a single police vehicle. The 1970s were a different time when people were less uptight about race. Leave it to the neo-Liberals of the 21st century that couldn't leave well enough alone and had to reignite racism. What a sorry lot those people are.
If you're on the Mel Brooks road, I highly recommend Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Hilarious, and the bonus is that it stars a very young Dave Chappelle. Great video too, love you guys doing movies!

I would love to see a new blazing saddles, just with the rolls reversed. Could you see Lilly Von Schtoup being played by Beyonce? The entire cast reworked to the opposite. Have a white sheriff in an all black town... Stuff like that. I wonder if it would work?

Check the credits in the beginning! Written by... Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks. Richard Prior wrote the parts for the White people and Mel Brooks wrote the parts for the Black people. That's why it came out so amazing!
1:45 edited the hard F out of the scene. I get it if that's the line where you'd get a strike or something, but reminds me of Chapelle's stand up where on his show, he could drop 40 N bombs in an episode, but couldn't say "f*gg*t"

Mel Brooks was an Jewish American Army minesweeper in Europe during WW2. He probably had to think of funny things to keep his mind occupied and I'm so thankful we have his work!!!

Mel Brooks said that Richard Pryor wrote the funniest joke in the movie and the studio cut it out. When the sheriff was in the dark with Madeline Kahn who was wondering if it was true that black men were well endowed, and started saying 'it's twoo, it's twoo!.' The sheriff replied with 'you're sucking on my arm.' Though that joke never made it into the final cut, hiring Richard Pryor to help write the movie was comedy genius. And as much as we think that movie could not be made today, it will always be a comedy classic that in the end, was an equal opportunity offender of all racial stereotypes.

Mel Brooks was a huge fan of British comedy from the Goons to Monty Python. It really shows in this movie. I had to explain it to my American friends.

My dad took my brother and me to see this at the drive - in theater back in 74. You won't see anything like it today.

Having seen this when it came out I absolutely love seeing people, both Black and White reacting to this these days. Hard to believe it came out 46 years ago now, but I know LOTS of people White and Black consider this one of (if not ) THE funniest movie they have ever seen. I saw this first time in 1974 one day, then took 4 or 5 different people to see it again the Very next day. Even now knowing the upcoming lines, people damn near gets stomach aches from laughing so damn hard at it. It's genius on so many levels --- mostly lampooning every stereotype you can think of and in every way. Thank you Mel and Richard for your parts in making this brilliant flick. Peace !!

I can't see anybody remaking Blazing Saddles today. It truly is a one of kind movie. A remake would not hold the comedy weight like the original did. It totally annihilates racism as being completely ignorant, and stupid. I remember watching this the first time back in the early 80s when I was just about 10, and I could understand what it did to racism even then. Great video, loved watching you guys enjoying the movie. You should watch Young Frankenstein if you haven't yet. It is another great Mel Brooks classic comedy.
My siblings & I loved History Of the World, Part I from 1981. It was the heyday of video store VHS rentals and for the 6 of us, this was one of our picks along with Airplane & The Warriors.

I saw this in the theater with my parents. Everybody laughed so hard during the beans scene you couldn't hear anything.
I watched the director commentary with Mel. He said Richard Pryor wrote a lot of Mongo's lines. He wrote, "Mongo is pawn in game of life." So many quotable lines. And I remember how cool I thought it was of Mel to have Bart riding by The Count Basie Orchestra in his Gucci outfit.
The cat taking a nap on the couch is priceless.....

Yeah, Young Frankenstein is the funniest movie ever.
I've never seen this movie but have heard about it over the years. Kind of want to watch it now after watching you guys laughing so hard! No way would this movie fly today! Thank god for classic comedy though. Nothing held back in the name of COMEDY. Patrice O'Neal once said something like "the idea of comedy should be a room with 100 people, 50 people will be laughing hysterically and 50 people completely horrified."
That is how comedy should be and that is how comedy should stay.

You should see the whole movie, without all the segments left out. It actually was written and produced and acted by Mel Brooks. He always pushed the boundaries, but if you saw it all, he makes so many brilliant points. Mel Brooks also wrote and produced and acted in a Broadway show called, "Springtime for Hitler", with a dance line of SS Nazis. The man is brilliant he has likely has not a racist bone in his body. I don't think Blazing Saddles should ever be re-made. There were some really wild and crazy parts to this movie which were left out of this compilation. He even has Chinese work crews, a western saloon lady entertainer patterned after Marlena Ditrich, with a German accent and some really risky lines. She falls in love/lust with the sheriff. I am sure you have seen the whole movie by now. Mel keeps it real and makes some powerful statements against racism or any kind of prejudices.
Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder’s chemistry was UNMATCHED.
But I have to express my disappointment that you guys didn’t let the campfire scene play out all the way through 😂 it’s a legendary cinematic moment

My favorite part of this movie is when their signing up to invade the town Gene Wilder dressed as a kkk dude pulls Cleavon from around the rock and he says "Where all the white women at?"
I saw this film when it premiered in a New Jersey theater. The audience had a ratio of 60/40 in favor of blacks. The laughter throughout the movie was non-stop and LOUD. By far the hardest I've ever seen an audience laugh.
After the movie people were still laughing hysterically. No brawls, no shootings, no threats, no demonstrations and not a single police vehicle.
The 1970s were a different time when people were less uptight about race. Leave it to the neo-Liberals of the 21st century that couldn't leave well enough alone and had to reignite racism. What a sorry lot those people are.

This movie was on TV every weekend, I swear, and then Youbg Dr. Frankenstein was on after it. Sigh...so thankful for comedy like this!

It is a great movie. If you like that one from Mel Brooks, you need to watch History of the World Part I or Spaceballs. Mel Brooks didn't only show how racisim is ridiculous in just one movie. He made a career out of it

The sheriff Cleavon Little also played the radio announcer in the 1971 movie vanishing point This is a great classic I saw it when I was 15 years old back in 1974 at the local movie theater glad you liked it!
That movie is so epically NOT PC - the reaction was cut down to 10 minutes LOL. The entire point to this movie to was make fun of racism and various bigotry. Such a great film & you are right - they COULDN'T make it today because people don't understand the point of it. If you liked this movie, you need to check out Young Frankenstein.
I would love to see a new blazing saddles, just with the rolls reversed. Could you see Lilly Von Schtoup being played by Beyonce? The entire cast reworked to the opposite. Have a white sheriff in an all black town... Stuff like that. I wonder if it would work?
FUN FACT....The reason all movie say no animals were harmed, was because of mango knocking out the horse in this movie. Also Mell Brooks is the writer-director of this movie and a few hilarious others. 👍
Check the credits in the beginning! Written by... Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks. Richard Prior wrote the parts for the White people and Mel Brooks wrote the parts for the Black people. That's why it came out so amazing!
1:45 edited the hard F out of the scene. I get it if that's the line where you'd get a strike or something, but reminds me of Chapelle's stand up where on his show, he could drop 40 N bombs in an episode, but couldn't say "f*gg*t"

Almost all of the cast has passed away at this point. Cleavon, Gene, Harvey, Slim, Madeline, Alex, Dom. Mel Brooks is still around. This is great satire, and pointed out the stupidity of racism.

Mel Brooks was an Jewish American Army minesweeper in Europe during WW2. He probably had to think of funny things to keep his mind occupied and I'm so thankful we have his work!!!

I'm a white Canadian man and saw this as a little kid with my Dad and showed me the absurdity of racism. I'm 51 years old and my kids don't see colour either. Love this flick.

I love this movie because everyone is in on the jokes. They make fun of all the stereotypes and you know the entire cast is just having fun.
Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs, two of the greatest comedies ever. Gene Wilder and Richard Prior Stir Crazy and See No Evil, Hear No Evil. Two of the best "buddy" comedies ever.
Mel Brooks said that Richard Pryor wrote the funniest joke in the movie and the studio cut it out. When the sheriff was in the dark with Madeline Kahn who was wondering if it was true that black men were well endowed, and started saying 'it's twoo, it's twoo!.' The sheriff replied with 'you're sucking on my arm.' Though that joke never made it into the final cut, hiring Richard Pryor to help write the movie was comedy genius. And as much as we think that movie could not be made today, it will always be a comedy classic that in the end, was an equal opportunity offender of all racial stereotypes.
