Oversharing in Seattle videos, and all of your content around work & deprogramming/healing the trauma of being a try-hard kid, have been such a soul guide as I finished college, graduated in December, and immediately started working full time in January. I started that job with a quiet quitting attitude because I knew it was just a means to an end, a stepping stone, and it was after listening to all of the pods on patreon that I decided to go into work and give notice. My last day was May 25th, and I’m spending this summer exploring my options and traveling to all the cities I can imagine myself growing in (and yes, one of those places is Seattle). I so deeply see myself in you, and I feel so grateful to have been able to learn lessons about work and life along side you. Happy Underemployment Era 💞✨

Girl, this was SO cathartic to watch. I’m breaking the news to my bosses tomorrow that I’m leaving our office, and I’m dreading that conversation so much. I’ve worked here for 4 years, and it was my first real job after college, so I have a lot of attachment to the place. Plus I absolutely love the people I work with. I just need to move on and take on a new challenge (luckily I do have an exciting new job lined up).
It just sucks because the office is already understaffed, and a big part of my role is training and supervising new folks. So I know it will cause issues in the short term for me to leave. But honestly it’s never the perfect time to leave, and I knew if I didn’t do it now, I would stay here for god knows how long!
Anyway I’m rambling - all that’s to say that I appreciate your content and your vulnerability, and I’m so excited for your time off and your next steps!!

Yes! 💪 My resignation last week was similar, so liberating, and kind of jarring? It’s weird to think that we’ve spent years stressing and worrying, over something that grinds you down as a human everyday and impacts your physical and mental health and yet it’s something that we can actually quite easily walk away from, but it somehow keeps us there?! Not sure if you felt like that too. But it’s a real weird mix of emotions. Good on you for listening to what you need and want 🙌

quitting should be easier!!! when i quit my job i blurted out a little speech at the beginning of a 1:1, and absolutely caved when they pushed asking why i was leaving. it takes soooo much strength to refuse to really explain like you did! also, nothing more validating but also infuriating to hear your boss say they agree that your job isn't right for you, or not be surprised when you quit - as if there was nothing they could have been doing to help push you in a different direction that might be a better fit for your strengths or interests.

  • @safety_sid
    @safety_sid Před 2 lety +38

Great job Katherine! One thing a lot of young people don't realize is after just 1 or 2 years in an industry you start to become invaluable and if you quit there's almost a 100% chance you will be hired right back no questions asked... if you ever wanted to come back. Quitting a job is a lot less permanent than people make it out to be in their imaginations. Good managers understand this and will most likely keep in touch with you throughout your next career moves, during times when they need your help and want to hire you back ... which you'll discover is a lot more often than you'd think. Literally can't wait to see what's to come!

your joy is so palpable and that freedom is so easy for me to picture that it just makes me cry. And I'm so happy that your manager was so sweet to you. Just makes me emotional. And you know what is so funny, I have also been journaling like crazy the past two weeks. I've filled about 2/3 of a large journal just in about 2.5 weeks because my head has been spinning recently. And I will be listening to that playlist for my own related reasons lmao

I wish I could quit my job like that. I work in the oil & gas industry, which I hate for obvious reasons, but I can't leave since its probably the only place where I can find a job that pays me well enough to live in Southern California. That's the curse of ADHD and anxiety, I can't code or do sales.

tl;dr - today’s my last day at my tech job after I submitted my notice and this video (and last!) couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I’ve also quit without a job lined up and decided to take this summer off.
The parallel in our job quitting journey is so similar, it’s scary. I just finished watching this vid and went back to your previous vid for context on how it all went down and I feel so so sooooooooo validated about my own journey. I also just recently quit my out of college tech job of almost 3 years (in Seattle!) after getting burnt. I’ve been quiet quitting for the past 6 months as I agonizingly go back and forth on whether I’m making the right decision. I knew I needed to quit but I couldn’t bring myself to do the studying that was needed for the software engineering interviews, just cuz of how mentally checked out/exhausted I was. I wholeheartedly agreed with so many points you made in the last video, especially the frustration about clearly doing less work and there being no consequence. What made it all even more difficult for me was that a promo was in progress, but I realized me chasing this promo was not truly what I wanted or needed right now, and it took me a long time to reach that conclusion on my own. Today is actually my last day at work after submitting my notice, and my current plan is to take my time for the 3-4 months to do what I need/want, and mentally reset myself for the next chapter in my life.
I was recommended to your channel from the “i don’t dream of labor” video, and I continued to watch after you moved to Seattle because I’m from Seattle myself! The YT algorithm works in mysterious ways but why does it feel like it knew you were gonna quit your job in a similar fashion to myself months later - kinda spooky, kinda fantastic…?

But I do feel a shift where I want to explore something outside of what I'm doing.
I have a good feeling that when I do come up with a different job, instead of having an eggshells moment for 2 weeks, like my last job, my manager will be more like yours, and get it.

Isn't it illegal to post a recording of a private conversation (i.e. the one with your manager)?

Pretty much as fun as when the lion kingdom started its sabbatical. 4 years later, having money was a lot more fun. Having paytreon & adsense is a real good living though.

Do you have a playlist anywhere?! I need some new indie music in my life! I’m in nashville or else I would totally be your concert buddy.☀️

12:53 - I've always kinda liked the name "funemployment". ;)

I emailed my notice. I don't know if I could've done it live- I did a phone call (could've been a teams meeting, I can't remember) after the email but even that was difficult. I had personal reasons for quitting and moved half way around the world but my manager was extremely insecure and kept asking me if it was because of him (even asked my closest work friend if I had lied and it actually was because of him). Awkward because I did have issues with his management so I wasn't about to say 'no you're great' I just emphasised that I would've left whether he was there or not.

Holy crap, I was in the same situation just a couple weeks back after I submitted my resignation (albeit slightly different reasons for quitting). He also asked my close coworker and think I was lying. He tried to pull the “real reason” out of me every chance he got. I also just focused on saying that I’m leaving for personal reasons and needing this time for myself.
I feel like it’s important to give feedback to managers so they can grow themselves but I can’t imagine a scenario where it can play out well, even “anonymized feedback” (which would usually be presented verbatim so it’s also easy to sus out who said what 🙄)

@@0Blaire0 exactly- I was relying on him for a reference and it's not like he did one specific thing, it was honestly his whole personality; the way he delegated tasks, interacted with people and responded to conflict. I can't solve his lifelong issues by notifying him of them. I just couldn't believe he knew I was moving countries yet somehow still thought it was just because of him- like yeah mate, the international move I've been wanting to do for the last 3 years to the place where my family is- definitely just doing that because of you. Did it not occur to him that I could've just found a local job in the same industry if he was the issue? I think because a lot of people left (some on leave) he was stressing but no one quit because of him- 2 of them went on maternity leave, 1 because of vaccine mandates and then me (so 4 out of a team of 10 within 3 months of him joining). Yes, we had our issues with him but we all clearly had other reasons for leaving or taking a break.
