Having grown up in Wisconsin (and now live in Minnesota), I always forget that monthly siren tests aren't normal for a lot of people. It is also highly amusing watching people be baffled by them :D
2:15 This conversation and following footage has blown my mind. It's not that late 90s/ early 2000s games didn't have the tech to accomodate more elaborate cities as explorable environments, they just all used Minneapolis as a source and nailed it to a tee!
Yep those are lemon bars, my dad’s favourite so I know them well. It is the filling that would be lemon meringue pie but with just some powdered sugar on top and usually a shortbread or Graham cracker crust
Many lemon bars don't include any meringue. Usually they just dust them with powdered sugar around the Northeast US. I think that was some of the confusion.
Fun fact: My pastor, who is from Minnesota, was just recently talking about the Minneapolis skyway system in casual conversation, so it's cool to get to see some of it here so soon after learning about it elsewhere! Also! w00t for more gVlog!
Interesting that you guys immediately picked up on both the skyways and their effect on downtown. Graham's right that aside from a couple specific streets (which I presume you did eventually find your way to), a lot of the restaurants are inside on the skyway level, and to Kathleen's point, there has actually been a small but vocal movement calling for the retirement of the skyways precisely because they divide the foot traffic and make it unnecessarily difficult to keep businesses open outside *or* inside. Also, COVID was not kind to downtown, unfortunately. It's recovered somewhat from the absolute low point in 2021/22, but Minneapolis has always been a bit of a commuter town, and the work from home movement has taken away a lot of the daytime traffic. :/
The opening few minutes describing the street level experience of Minneapolis were top notch :D It really is barren and doesn't get a whole lot better up in the skyways. You're there for work during the day and then you leave to go 30 miles home to the burbs. Hosting thousands of people at the convention center or stadium? Nah they'll find somewhere else to go for non-event things!
The hometown pattern recognition part of my brain heard Kathleen say she liked Pittsburgh and that make me glad. Hope yinz can come visit for a magicon sometime soon.
As some who has lived in Minneapolis my entire life this was delightful. The whole was just "Hey I know that scenery! Also, good job on calling Minnesota winters." And yes, there are cafes and stuff inside. There's actually a lot of nice public space inside in downtown Minneapolis, though I am less familiar with the area around the convention center.
First Wednesday of the month? Ah yes the true Minnesota experience. We do take tornados very seriously. My friend from New Jersey was going all "Hey Tex, wtf?" And I realized I was desensitized to a thing that is normally very alarming (heh) to everyone else. Honestly, I did love seeing all the beautiful shots of the Minneapolis sites, your videography highlights a lot of the beautiful aspects of Minneapolis, the skyway shotes are great. Shame your hotel room didn't get the view of the Loring Park Greenway. Those rooms are kind of the hot commodity for a beautiful view, picked that info up when staffing a convention there.
And they go off every first Wednesday at 1pm local time. They're tested even in the snowy months. It's because the Twin Cities are on the extreme northern edge of Tornado Alley. Gotta make sure folks are safe!
@@TheJohtaja I wonder if they are for another sort of emergency. I'm not aware of any natural disasters you have in Finland but it is nice to have a well regulated system just in case.

Don't lemon bars usually have a shortbread crust and powdered sugar topping, though? Those did just look like they were sliced from a larger meringue pie, XD
It was so great to meet you guys and thanks again so much for chatting with The Infinity Bros after long hours of convention and two hours of Game Knights! You two are amazing!
I'm in Hotel Banquets and Conventions (San Diego). I see that PM Break and think, "oh, a sweet tooth break". Shocked at the whole bars, don't look at what the hotel charged the client for each of those bars +Service Charge +Sales Tax.
The beginning Minneapolis discussion portion literally looks like downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa where I live. It’s creepy how similar it looks. Also I feel the siren test on the first Wednesday. Is that just a Midwest thing?
So yeah downtown is pretty blank at ground level other than specific areas. Most of the like cafes and stores and bodega esq shops are on level 2 as part of the skyway
The talking about Minneapolis downtown... "the cafes must be indoors!" If they're anything like Edmonton and Calgary, no. They're not. They just don't have any. Downtown sucks. Offices close and it becomes a desolate wasteland.
Oh no. You complained about the view from a hotel room window. That means that the next few moments in my mind will be filled with John Cleese asking what you expected to see.
Graham! I have to ask! At Magicon Minneapolis I gave you a proxied deck I called Bear Force Five that was made up entirely of 2/2's that cost exactly two different colors of mana. Did you ever get the chance to take a look at it?
Omg glad to see this! saw your past one and was bummed you didnt do one for mpls and now here it is! I'm happy to see it because of course I am from Mpls and was in the crowd for that Game Knights live! It was an amazing game! Now to watch this and surely not get offended at all by anything said or done.
5:04 Siren tests are real in Midwest USA, and they do test that the sirens work at 1pm on the first Wednesday of the month. But in the past they were used more often for some very sketchy reasons. Similar sirens were also used daily in Sundown Towns alerting minorities to get off the streets before sundown. If you were not white and were found out of doors past sundown you could be arrested, or worse.
So not in that area no, they are basically in the area that’s a lot of offices and well it’s cold for a lot of time so the stuff you would expect on the ground level is up at level 2 in the skyway.
@@nibblitman that is so interesting I have nothing like that in my country.... Sounds very sci fi /doctor who "in the future the UK smog got so unbearable people gave up old London and now live in new london built above it and the street floor is for mutants"

I mean, that was just his Day One impression of Minneapolis. I hope there’s a narrative arc where he slowly gets a different perception, but considering where the convention centre is located, its a faint hope.
It's now December. The "You can't post this until after the show-warning" did get progressively funnier for almost a full 7 months! 😂

I grew up calling them Lemon Bars. Perhaps akin to Lemon Meringue but with little to no actual Meringue.
