    .
    hi, my name is Kat and I'm a cozy gamer living in the UK. My favourite games are farming simulators, open world adventure games, and narrative heavy, decision-based games.
    if you like my content, it would mean the world to me if you'd subscribe and like the video! I'm on a mission to make any game cozy, so grab your tea or coffee, and let's get to gaming.

      I reserved the steam deck last February and waited a whole seven months for it 😩 I play mainly on PC and play both AAA titles and indies. I use it so much because I already play games on my desktop and being able to take those same games with me anywhere is just awesome! Every single game I’ve thrown at it has been completely playable and it’s just so cool having that freedom of choice of what to play now without having to wait for it to be ported. Also being a college student I’m out and about so I play a lot portably but also I travel more frequently now so when I’m somewhere else over breaks I now have a PC I can play on it my free time! I dock it in the living room so often and just play games like a regular console and it works so well for that. Switch remains my splatoon machine though, steam deck will never replace that :P

    I have both and I think you nailed the explanation. Nintendo is great for what it does (Zelda, Mario, etc) so I’ll always have a Nintendo console, but steam gives me access to virtually EVERY other game and is perfect for performance in a handheld console. I don’t like sitting at a desk to game, so the steam deck has opened the realm of games I can play now!

    One thing that sounds trivial Is I wish the switch had an achievement system. So when you beat hard games or you do challenging feats you have something to show.

    • @CozyGamerKat
      @CozyGamerKat  Před 11 měsíci +1

      YES ME TOO!! I play a lot of PS5 games too and the race to Platinum is honestly what makes some of the games soooo much fun. I really don’t understand why Nintendo has nothing like it

  • @jamesbrick250
    @jamesbrick250 Před rokem +9

    Steam Deck's ability to emulate almost every game in existence including the old 70s 80s Nintendo games is mind blowing. It's like every new handheld console is released, Steam Deck became an automatic comparison as if it's a benchmark.
    And also the community and 3rd party hardware for Steam Deck is getting very big, actually too big for other handheld console to compete.

    Really love the work you put into this video Kay- definitely got my eye on your channel. Had my eye on the Deck for a while, especially with its current discount, but I’ve been on the fence on getting one since I also have a PS4 and Switch, and am worried I may be overdoing it on gaming systems. Still, it’s been on my mind a lot more since my current computers can’t run indies very well, and I’m between either the deck or double dipping on some indies with my console setups.

  • @michaelmoceri1118
    @michaelmoceri1118 Před rokem +4

    I have both.
    I used to play Nintendo and Playstation. Since Sony started moving their titles to PC, and then the Steam Deck came out, I picked up a Steam Deck instead of a PS5. Now I feel like Switch plus Steam Deck gets me the most access to the greatest variety of games. Because I enjoy handheld, and I'm okay with 1080p while docked.
    There are some options for shell swaps for the Deck now. I have a transparent purple back from Jsaux on mine. There are some full shell swap options, but they seem like way too much effort.

    • @CozyGamerKat
      @CozyGamerKat  Před rokem

      Ooh I really want to shell swap mine! How did you find the process? Easy enough?

    • @michaelmoceri1118
      @michaelmoceri1118 Před rokem

      @@CozyGamerKat I only did the back swap, and it was easy. I think it was 4 screws, then the clips around the outside. Then put the new rear shell on, push to attach the clips, and put the screws back in.
      The hardest part is remembering to take out the SD card, because you can snap it if you open the shell with the card in.
      The total swap looks really hard. You need to take basically every board off, and then remove the screen, and it looks just awful. Like people are saying that it took them more than an hour just to get the screen out and then clean off the glue. Basically everyone I've heard talk about it says that it's completely not worth it. Even people who do things like shell swap Nintendo Switches.

    You know until I got the steam deck I had no idea there was a whole subgenre of CZcamsrs that covered "cozy games". Its been nice to find recommendation videos that aren't all first person shooters lol
    Also definitely get both if you can, I have the steam deck to travel with and play all my steam titles and the switch for Nintendo's first party games.
    Plus for me personally the steam deck has better ergonomics. I almost never played the switch in handheld mode. Even though I don't have large hands the small joycons would give me cramps after about half-an-hour.

    Thank you so much for this video! Planned on purchasing a console soon, and have been deliberating the 2. Never been a gamer but wanted to get into cozy, indie games. Downloaded Steam on my computer and have been playing a few games on there first to really see if I enjoy gaming in the first place. I was considering an OLED switch bc I like the aesthetic, and wanted something I can play on with my little sister. Not many cozy game channels bring up the fact that there’s more games out on Steam than the Nintendo shop. in hindsight I’ve never really been into Nintendo games at all. I love how intuitive and capable the Steam Deck is, and although not as commercial and cute looking as the switch, it would be more practical if I bought the console that I would genuinely enjoy playing, since that’s what it’s for anyways lol.

      I already had a gaming laptop so I wondered the same thing but I find myself using the steam deck a lot more to be honest. I can play most of my games in comfort on the sofa so unless I really want the larger screen or higher powered graphics I tend to play it on the steam deck. I also travel a lot for work and it's been a lifesaver not having to lug 15 pounds of laptop and accessories with me to pass the time I spend in hotels lol. I can see why it wouldn't work for everyone but I love being able to play Subnautica, no man's sky, or my current favorite Spiderman remastered, and have it look great while on the road

    • @CozyGamerKat
      @CozyGamerKat  Před rokem

      Yes absolutely! I also feel like it just really depends how much gaming you do - like if you're playing indie games non-stop all the time, a steam deck is great. But like if I'm just playing casually Switch is usually fine for that and kind of has all the options you need

  • @cheezypocket4063

    Thought i’d give my two cents lol. I’ve had both the steam deck and the switch. i don’t have the switch anymore but i do have the steam deck that i got from my bf for christmas. i LOVE nintendo but i’m a huge retro gamer when it comes to nintendo games. I prefer the steam deck because i love being able to play pc games with my friends without having a pc. i’m a huge traveler so it’s AWESOME for that. i usually play pretty “low end” older games like oblivion, duke nukem, etc. but even when i play a larger game like tower unite it runs super good. and i get the chance to emulate the retro games from nintendo that i love. personally i had the switch mostly for retro games, so i thjnk having the deck is a game changer for me. Thanks for this video btw! lots of love

    Great comparation! Thanx!
    Just want to drop a word about dockability. For NS dock station goes from the box but for SD you need to buy it buy yourself. At first -- you need to pay additionally, second -- if shipping is not available to your country buying additional options will be quite more complicated then having it out of the box =) So from my point of view dockability is a weak side of SD!

    I know this is an older review but I do have one nitpick to point concerning the resolution factor between the two systems. While hardware resolition (pixel density) is the same between the two systems, the functional resolution likely will not be. The Switch often renders games well below the 720p native resolution for a reasons such as performance stability and/or battery life. Thusly the same game across both systems can look significantly different even when you wouldn't expect this to be the case (example Triangle strategy on the switch next to the Steam deck version has muddy/blurry visuals).
    It seems a point that is commonly missed in these comparative reviews between the two but likely would influence peoples' thoughts on which to buy or at least which system to play a game on if they own both already. I actually think this is a misunderstanding around the switch which explains why people want an updated Switch 2 to have a 1080p screen resolution despite the battery hit this would cause for portability purposes. 720p already looks great on on a 7 inch screen. It's just that many switch games don't render at 720p.

I'm a little bit of a perfectionist so applying it took ages and then afterwards I would still see parts of it not applied correctly, because that's inevitable I feel. So after a week I got rid off the skin. :')
    I found a clear case and cute thumb grips. And will put stickers that I found on RedBubble on the case. So I'm very happy with this other customisation solution. Although I still can't wait for cute cases to show up in the future. :)

I can’t really speak on emulation (as it’s not something I’m familiar with) but in terms of game prices and access to retro games, I think you’re better off with the Steam Deck. A lot of older games - non-Nintendo IP - are available on Steam already, or are available on things like Xbox Gamepass. And I am not hooked on Nintendo titles, mostly play action RPGs,so the Steam library is plenty for me. Also, I’m a Mac person - so it’s my first gaming PC. As a handheld,it’s been comfortable and easy to use for me. Yeah it’s bigger, and the battery life isn’t as robust, but since I don’t use it on planes or away from home very much, and I can plug it into the wall or a power brick at home, so that’s not an issue for me. I haven’t had much luck docking it to my TV, but I didn’t dig in to try and fix the issues. I’m sure I could have made it work.

    Excellent informative video. I agree with everything you said, except for the last part, where you state that getting the Switch is the cheaper option. Actually getting the Steam Deck is the cheaper option, because there are way cheaper games on Steam, Steam sales, and digital resellers, than Nintendo games (The infamous Nintendo Tax). As far as i know its possible to call people through steam if theyre on your steam friend list, but im not going to lie i never used that feature.
    As far as use case goes, i agree with you 100%, Switch games are always going to run better and have more battery life on Switch but as someone with really big hands who finds the Switch to be uncomfortable, I've found myself emulating it on the Deck to pretty good results overall. Granted the battery life isn't amazing and theres occasional stutter, but I'd gladly take the more comfortable grips to play any day. The only thing I really miss with emulation is amiibo support. Im one of those idiots who has wayyyy too many of them, and while I usually never really use them, its still kind of sad to see their potential go unseen. (For example ACNH's Sanrio items are locked behind amiibo cards, which I own, but getting them to work on emulators, while theoretically possible, is a pain in the ass and really nothing like the intended experience) Also games like Mario Odyssey, Skyward Sword or the Mario Galaxy port really do not translate as well when not using the two separate JoyCons.
    The biggest pro Ive found though is that its incredibly easy to transfer save files around from my Deck to my desktop, compared to the Switch where cloud saves are locked behind the online service I never bothered to pay for and there's no option to export them to the SD card or anything. Being able to keep my save between devices, and knowing I'll be able to continue playing on it basically for ever has got me to put a lot more time into side quests that I would usually avoid. It might sound dumb, but I never really felt like on the Switch the games saves were mine, where being able to just put the saves on a USB and do whatever I want with them really changed that around.
    Same thing with PC games like Celeste I already owned on Switch. I now have around 80 hours in that game and have done most of the side content, which I never bothered with on Switch not only cause the controls leave a lot to be desired for Celeste but also because it didn't really feel like those saves were a part of my experience if that makes sense. Things like achievements are always fun to give me that little extra nudge to continue a game, and the integration with the overall Steam platform really made me feel like my Steam profile was a lot more of an extension of my play experience than the Nintendo User profiles ever did. It's a small thing, but it really changes how I end up playing games, which is really the big difference for me.

    Great idea to get the Switch used. Lots buy it then sell it because they want something else. Unfortunately there are great cozy games that look better on Steamdeck due to its greater power.

    Steam Deck changed the game forever. If Valve start selling them in stores it will fly off the shelves, and the Steam sells are insane I recently picked up Ori 1 and 2 as a bundle on sale for 5.89 yes 5.89 for both games I also buy games off CD Keys so you never pay full price for a game the value is amazing.

    • @CozyGamerKat
      @CozyGamerKat  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah I’d be curious to see someone do a proper report on this after scraping some data! Just anecdotally, I find I tend to buy things on sale a lot more on Steam as they do so many events and what not. I think the kind of equalizer though is that you can buy games used for Switch where you can’t for Steam Deck, so it’s hard to say for certainty which ends up being cheaper in the long run

    Currently deciding between a steam deck for $400 or a modded OLED for $600... I just don't need the steam deck despite it's much better performance because I already have a PC and I don't see myself playing PC games on such a small screen and without a physical mouse lol. But, it's definitely cheaper and can emulate switch games better than the switch as well, but the OLED screen is gorgeous (battery life is also great + light/portable) and I guess since it will be modded (free games hehe....) the price compared to the deck would be similar.
    I already have a V1 modded switch (it's battery is dying lol), and since this model is rare (release model) I can sell it for around $250 (how much I got it for new), and I looked at my unused switch game collection (unused because I play the games modded for free...) and the entire thing would go for $300 so I'm right in between...
    Also, even though I've been playing nintendo games like BOTW on PC with much better 4k graphics than my switch, I feel like Nintendo Games are way more fun when played portably... Also the new gold Zelda switch is just stunning compared to the chunky deck.
    And on top of this, the switch is in it's 7th year and an upgrade or next-gen console is probably on the way so I'm hesitant to spend the money for a modded OLED (though I think it will become rarer and might actually increase in value).

    Doesn't consider the cost of the games themselves. Steam has regular dirt cheap sales. Nintendo games aren't a bargain.

    Why The Switch is better
    1. Better battery life
    2. Tabletop mode option
    3. Removable joycons on dock mode instead of needing external controller
    4. Physical games and digital games instead of just digital options
    5. Less expensive
    6. Nintendo Exclusives without the headache of trying to run an emulator with buggy software
    7. Sleek (better looking), smaller, and lighter
    8. No need to tinker with games to make them work right, they just work
    9. Better motion control plus HD rumble
    10. Doesn't overheat/ no noisy fan
    11. Better customer support
    12. Overall reliability (less crashing etc.)

      9. Motion control is superior on the Steam Deck. Vibration is superior on the Switch.
      10. Steam deck OLED has neither of these problems.
      11. Steam customer service clears Nintendo's by miles. Most people who plays consoles know this.

      @@sneekz07 1. Steam deck OLED yes, I was talking about the original Steamdeck. Even then the OG Switch (not even OLED) gets about 20 minutes more battery than the Steamdeck OLED.
      2. Of course it can be done with the Steamdeck, but not naturally. You have to purchase additional controllers for 2 player and find something to lean it on or purchase a stand. It’s messy. The switch has a built in stand and the joycons slide right off requiring nothing else.
      3. (7) Sure, beauty is in the eye of be beholder. However, I doubt many honest people would say that the bulky and thick 90s Game Gear looking handheld is better looking than the thin and sleek Switch.
      4. (8) Tinkering with many games is required to make them work right so they aren’t buggy. You are correct that many games do not require that.
      5. I’ve heard people complain a lot about latency of the gyroscope of the Steamdeck.
      6. (10) I’ve seen many forums of people complaining about their Steamdeck overheating. You are correct that the loud fan is only an issue for the LCD Deck.
      7. (11) I concede this point after consideration, dealing with Nintendo can be a pain.
      8. You ignored (12). Crashing is common with Steam decks.
      I’m not saying The Steamdeck is bad, it’s a handheld PC you can play AAA games on, which is sick. I’m just saying that unless you are tech savvy and already play PC games with a steam library, The Switch is probably going to be a better option for most people.
      It’s more portable (it doesn’t even weigh a pound), sleeker, and comes with a dock. To dock the Steamdeck you need to make an additional $80 purchase.
      The 3 in one hybrid concept out of the box is just amazing to me, the Steamdeck is a pseudo-PC shoved in a glorified modern Game Gear in my opinion.
