    Because of the Steam Deck, I’m now able to play all of the games I missed out on decades ago. Everything from PS2, PS3, Wii U, Wii, and even Xbox and Xbox 360 games, and even the latest AAA PC games I can now play - all in one comfy handheld. It’s freakin’ insane. Even when I was younger, I never thought we’d have a device like this. I have like 70 games from emulation alone that I’m currently playing through. Currently playing Wild Arms 3 on PS2 emulator. I freaking love this thing! :D

      Right? When i was a young lad, I never would have dreamed of such a portable handheld device with such power! My first console was a NES and I played the ever living crap out of it. I knew all the tricks to get faulty games working; blowing the cartridge, pinch slamming the cart at the lip, rubbing alcohol cleaning kits that basically you bought just for the cool plastic NES case it came in, and the best way to get a cartridge working that was giving you trouble would be to attach it to a game genie and it would just work. Sega Genesis & Super Nintendo was a great era as well. How times have changed, and here we are. What an exciting device, especially for those of us around my age, who grew up and witnessed the evolution of gaming!

    For those that the deck is too heavy/hot, you can dock the deck. You can leave it plugged into the wall and the tv. You will need a dock/hub that has a power port (PD port) , hdmi port, and usb port/s. You can then place the deck wherever you like and don't have to hold it. Also you have the option of using keyboard and mouse if you need to. Can use cordless for controller, keyboard and mouse. You will lose the track pads doing this but some controllers have one pad.

    I believe 2 pros to the steam deck that you didn’t mention is that, depending on your region, games on steam can go cheaper compared to the same game on the eshop. And steam goes on sale a lot. The other pro is of course emulation. If there’s an old game that you wish to play handheld, you don’t need to jailbreak the steam deck like you would with other consoles just to do it, and it’s a fairly easy process with no fear of getting bricked and whatnot.

    Don’t forget the steam deck gives you the option to change the refresh rate and frame rate of the screen. Often if a game runs hot or eats battery setting the screen refresh to 40 hz and frame rate to 40 fps will solve the issue to an extent. Many of the newer heavy duty games don’t run at 60 fps but hover around 45 to 50 so you can end up with a smoother experience, lower temps and longer battery life with the “golden 40/40” as I believe it’s called. Being able to tinker with settings like this is one of the reasons to love the steam deck lol

    this is such a helpful review with a perspective that so many people can relate to! i personally love that the switch has created this niche console genre that really does help with accessibility. i've definitely been thinking about picking up a steam deck for a while now, and this may have just swayed me to put it on my christmas wishlist this year! thanks so much for such a balanced and informative review!

    I am also a cozy gamer with weak hands chronic pain and chronic illness so this is the most useful and informative review of the steam deck I've seen thank you for this!!! I currently use a gaming laptop it's not as powerful as a PC and not as portable as a handheld console but for me I think I might stick to using it since I can like get a desk for my bed that is near a plug in with an external cooling fan and play it as long as I'm able to sit up in bed or on the couch or at my desk. One thing that's cool but doesn't always work well is that joycons and pro controllers are compatible with steam even the ones you get with your switch just connect it with Bluetooth I've not personally found many uses for this way to play with the games I like but maybe that can help someone who wasn't aware of that like I wasn't for years lol

      @Frank_42 Před rokem

      The only things I don't like about my gaming laptop (Razer Blade 15) are it has loud ever present fans, needs a big honking power bar, and the whole cooling pad/lap desk makes it all bulky and a chore to set up. Then once I set myself up it sometimes occurs to me that I forgot something or need to go to the bathroom. Also the mouse is a bit awkward to operate from bed.

I am also chronically ill so the specific con about the hot screen was something I really needed to hear, and not included in any other videos I've watched! Anyway, I finally ordered my deck and I'm so excited for it to arrive. it will be my first pc gaming experience too, so I'm excited for it to open so many gaming doors for me!
    also, even my switch lite is heavy for me to hold up, I recommend propping a pillow on your lap and resting the console on it while you play! it's so helpful and let's me game for way longer :)

    I’ve been planning on a steam deck for awhile now, but have been hesitant until more of the games I want to play are optimized for it (sunhaven is a big one and I’m so sad to hear it’s very difficult 😭). A video idea I’d love is a list of cozy games that actually run okay on the steam deck! Some games I’d love to hear about is if coral island or a little witch in the woods is practical to play on here

      I have been playing Sun Haven on my steam deck more than I have played it on my computer. I would say the main difficulties are some of the UI is small. A lot of games that start off difficult can be made easier it just takes some work. I did some custom mapping of key binds for things like spells, inventory, map, skills, and quests.

    • @vv2922

      I’ve been playing Sun Haven on my SD, & there r controller templates posted by other users in the SD community, & I downloaded one of them instead of tweaking on my own & works great. & some old PC games that work only w/ keyboard & mouse. I use the trackpad as mouse & set keyboard keys to buttons. Been playing Mass Effect 1&2 fine that way. There’s so much flexibility & work-arounds, thanks to the SD community.

      @@BitterSweetNitemare click the game you wanna play (or while the game is playing), go to controller configs, click the controller template bar (default will say “gamepad”), then it will show a list of basic templates but just click R1 button to scroll to ‘community layouts’ & pick the one you want based on descriptions, wait to download, & click Y/X to apply layout & you’re good to go. I got the one titled “Stead Deck Layout with 2 Virtual Menus” by Babi, but there’s more since the last time I picked.

    A big point in favour of the Steam Deck over the Switch for me is that the Deck respects its user.
    The Switch is a locked-down system which will brick itself if you try to run your own software on it or mod it to suit your needs - it's like Nintendo are saying: "This device you bought? You don't really own it. We have the right to tell you what you can and can't do with it."
    The Steam Deck on the other hand lets you get into its guts as much as you want, even install a different operating system on it if that's what you want to do. Valve released their own tutorial on how to open up the Deck and replace components. That shows respect for their customers' intelligence.
    I know most casual users might not ever want to get into modding and that's fine, but everyone should still recognise the value of a company that respects them as a customer over one that treats them like a tenant.

    It's so nice to relate to someone so closely in the need for a steam deck! I have stage 4 endometriosis. This comes with lots and lots of chronic pain and some days i cant even sit upright let alone even get out of bed. I love my pc, but im just too uncomfortable most of the time. The last time i forced myself to sit at my desk i had to take 3 days off work. I have played so many more steam games this year because of the deck.
    This is a great device for so many people and i hope that the cozy community sees its potential!

    There are actually many community threads that have list for games not Steam verified and how well they work, and ways to get them to run if possible. The Deck uses Proton to allow windows games to run on Linux, and there are many different versions of Proton to be had. While this isn't as easy as dropping a cart in the Switch, it's far from hard to do, even for users with no experience. Steam also has an amazing refund policy, so even if you get a game that doesn't run properly, or your not advanced enough for some community fixes, so long as it's within the time frame, and under a certain amount of playtime, you can get your funds back.
    Another great selling point of the Deck, is the amazing sales on games, as a game like the Witcher 3 on Switch runs sub par and cost $60, I got the GOTY edition for $10. Fanatical is the sight were I get the best deals on pretty much a daily basis, and they show if games are verified or not, and links to the Steam pages as well. I haven't paid over 20 for any AAA title, and most have cost under 10, and Indie titles are normally only a few bucks, it's insanity. LOL

    Since your most-liked use case is playing somewhere comfortable, and two of the things you don't like are the device getting hot and running down the battery with demanding games, and you also have a desktop PC, you may find it useful to experiment with Steam Remote Play: the game runs on your desktop PC but streams the video to, and takes control inputs from, your Deck. The Deck is barely doing anything - just decoding a video stream and sending inputs - so the battery lasts a long time and the device doesn't get hot.

It does get hot though so the portability would be nice. There are a lot of mods available for Dinkum right now and one of them is having passive mobs so if hunting is something that deters you from trying it, that is an option. You can add mods on the steam deck as well. Jennooki has tried it and it works for her. The steam deck is almost an essential for those of us that travel for work a lot and love to game. It fits in my suitcase so I no longer have the weight or worry of carrying around my whole laptop setup and I can play almost all of the same games in my steam library.
    Since I got it I hardly ever consider getting third party games for my switch. If it plays on switch odds are it will play and look better on steam deck. As far as comfort goes, I actually find it way more comfortable than the switch. I always played switch docked with a pro controller because my hands would cramp up on the little joycons, and I don’t even have large hands lol. I think the best part about the steam deck is the community of players all testing and sharing their playing experience and settings with each other all trying to get their favorite games working optimally.

I used to have a tv but I gave it to my brothers like 8 years ago lol. Would you still recommend saving up for the steam deck if I haven’t tried pc gaming at all?

    • @killingtime9283

      Hello 🙂 I don't know if it will be of any help but the steam decks weight is 669 grams or 1.48lbs. For comparison, if you have a Nintendo switch it weight is 400 grams or 0.88lbs.
      What would the optimal setup look like for you? Would you connect the steam deck to a TV and also connect a separate light weight controller to play with? That's definitely possible, I often do that myself. 🙂

  • @signe_stilett
    @signe_stilett Před rokem

    Steam Deck replaced my laptop. It is quieter, more performant, lighter, and less of a chore to get around with.
    I use it in both Desktop mode with mouse and keyboard to play games like Arma 3, NavalArt and other such, and in gaming mode to get through my backlog of games that are compatible with controller controls. Lately it was Panzer Knights, Little Witch Nobeta, Linelight and Tetris Effect
    I often enough set it up as a console at big screen with multiple controllers to play with my sister and guests with four player couch multiplayer. Some great games for this are Horizon Chase Turbo and Colt Canyon. But 1v1 fighting games are also sweet
    Cons? Accessories don't ship to Ukraine, it is a hassle to get Deck-specific things. Aside for that, it is superb

    Price wise, do you guys recommend a steam deck or nintendo switch/lite/oled

    • @ScarletAmethyst
      @ScarletAmethyst Před rokem

      It kind of depends. The Switch Lite is the cheapest at $200 ($100 cheaper than the Xbox Series S) although the Lite doesn't have TV support which can be a factor if you like to play local multiplayer like Minecraft, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Even at $300 and $350, it's still a good price although you'll have to get your own Switch games. However, Nintendo does have Switch Online which offers emulation of NES/Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color games, and the Expansion Pack added in Genesis/Mega Drive, Nintendo 64, and Game Boy Advance emulation. The most obvious downside of the Switch would be the lack of quality third-party titles especially Mature/18+ rated games (for example, The Sims 4 isn't on the Switch).
      The Steam Deck is more expensive ($400-$650), but I'd say it offers more value to existing Windows gamers as you can play most Windows games on the Deck, and there are a number of games that are released on Windows (or Xbox and/or PlayStation) that aren't on the Switch. The caveat is that not all games will work on Linux such as games with anti-cheat and hardware intended for Windows may not function properly (for example, gaming mice and keyboards). The storage can be a downside (although you can compensate with a microSD card or a third-party dock with an M.2 slot) as even 512 GB is too small for modern 9th generation titles and most 8th generation titles. When comparing the Deck or ROG Ally to gaming computers, I'd say the Deck offers more value at 64 GB and 256 GB especially when you compare to scam gaming desktops like Alarco and ViprTech who are selling gaming PCs at $500 with a GTX 650 that doesn't work with modern games.
