    Game asides, Japanese caregiver's working condition is tough as f**k.
    Grandpa and Grandma got senile enough to attack you because they think you're a kidnapper, and if you lose patience and treat them even a little harshly, their families will sue you.
    Many Japanese don't wanna working as a caregiver, so there are many foreign caregivers, such as Chinese and Vietnamese.
    So I don't want to live long and cause any trouble...

    Chilla doesn't fail to impress.....and confuse. How did Souichi end up possessed by the Tengu?
    The thing about that one statement - "He was already gone the moment you stepped into the house" - is that it can have two meanings. The first is the more obvious one, that Souichi was already a lost cause by the time the protag got there, that you were already too late to save him.
    But the other possibility is that it's a statement of blame: The moment the protag stepped into the house, they unknowingly sealed Souichi's fate, that what happened was their fault. I think the Tengu was using the protagonist to complete the ritual that would allow it to become "complete", which is why Souichi is possessed in the ending. You did exactly what it wanted you to do....

    • @ManlyBadassHero
      @ManlyBadassHero  Před 3 lety +435

      You can argue the old man didn't gain the ability to talk, it was the Tengu talking and that he was senile all along after all. The object at the end was also led to you by notes attached to the ritual site which is a bit suspect.

      I'm thinking grandma was actually trying to stop the tengu and help souichi. She was stabbing the protag to stop her which is why after the protag "freed him" she was on her knees crying cause she failed. Removing her from the house is keeping her from interfering.

  • @Selrisitai
    @Selrisitai Před 2 lety +19

    I think why Chilla's Art is becoming sort of renown among let's-players is because he takes the time to create a very mundane (read that: realistically common) situation, then building up the horror from there.
    He also has a habit of creating a strange character or two who have nothing to do with the supernatural, but are rather people who you might meet in real life, albeit with their eccentricities dialed up quite high. (In this one it was the junky who wouldn't let you into the building until you played rock-paper-scissors with him, and after winning, brought him a vial of morphine.)
    I believe that this is an intentional story design: Start _very_ mundane, to immerse the viewer; then add a curveball of oddness that's not supernatural or dangerous, but strange enough to get you kind of stagger you emotionally or psychologically, and then when the horror starts it's generally very slow, and then all at once.
    Not to mention the distinct graphical style, attention to the minute details of building layouts, objects scattered around rooms, on tables, chairs and desks, _et cetera._
    I wonder if he uses pre-made assets or does them all himself, or with a team. I haven't yet noticed an obvious "tell" that he uses just prefabricated assets, but then, I ain't a game developer so I wouldn't likely know even if he were.

    _"Old Terminator" should be in every Japanese horror game_
    I found the atmosphere in the home very creepy. Chilla's Art games always have excellent atmosphere. I didn't understand why that Karasu Tengu cursed that family or why the other caregiver was so affected by this. I assume that there was something in the strange backstory of the replacement caregiver that uniquely qualified her to help defeat a yokai, but it didn't tie it up very well.
    As much as I enjoy the games, I typically come away with a wanting of more story or better told story.

    The 'religious dagger' is actually a Vajra/Dorje, by the way. Seems like a weird choice, to be honest. It IS a ritual weapon, but it's actually a double or quad mace that just happened to have a sharp point on each end. It's Buddhist and Hindu.
    Dunno why the translation insists it is a 'dagger' though.

    I haven't watched "The Grudge"/"Ju On" for a long while, but the first half of this game feels a lot like those. I can't remember which movie exactly (I've watched a lot of the franchise. The Japanese versions are so many), but I remember one where there's a senile old person and a caregiver. I think this game is a kind of homage to the franchise. The Direct-to-Video original movie (the very first bearing "Ju On" title) also have separate segment that follow different main character. Each segments are started with a black screen and the name of the character on the lower left (or right. Can't remember). It is similar to this game.

    Really, another game where you go through all the trouble only to have it undone in the ending because lol horror game. What even was the point of it chasing you down and handing back the bone box if it had already possessed the old guy in the first place?

    • @dahkdm8787
      @dahkdm8787 Před 3 lety +27

      My impression was that you saved the wife's soul but were manipulated by the Tengu to possess Souichi. Alternatively the monk from the beginning (and the ending) may have the Tengu in disguise: "you have a good soul" is used by both the monk in the beginning, and Souichi after being taken down from the stake.
      It is also likely that the Tengu chased the protagonist in order to attain a stronger, younger body instead of Souichi's old and feeble one.

    As expected, another fine game from Chilla's Art. Pretty slow start, but that worked for me though some segments probably could have been cut down a bit. Still, really didn't see where this story was going. The grandmother just silently coming up and stabbing you startled me, and the final escape with the Tengu was good.

    To be honest over 80% of Japan is elderly.
    Although it was not common before, now more and more home for the elderly kind of situations now exist.
    It is more common to see the elderly in the house though, unless it is an extreme situation.
    Especially in Asia it is not normal to send an elder to a home.
    Idk why I wanted to say this, I just feel like to be surrounded by your family when you get old would be much better than being alone in a home. Which is, as far as I know, the normal in western culture.
