  • Who else is like me out there... when it comes to ATV shocks... those things are a complete mystery. I've never been inside one. I've never had a spring off one. If I want to make one look nicer, I'm in there flossing the spring with a rag and brushes and good enough is good enough. Heaven forbid if one needs to be rebuilt... that's just a bundle of black magic that I'll never know...
    Well... not anymore!! My good buddy Patrick Farnum pulls back the curtain for us and reveals all the mysteries of the ATV shock world. We find out what's inside... how it works... what to do and what not to do! This is Part 1 of a 3 part series: Disassembly / Tear Down. These things are complex and there's a lot to know with these, but after this video, you'll know enough to be dangerous! Well, dangerous, or empowered!
    Watch as Pat breaks things down step by step for us to teach us all the mysteries of the ATV shock!

    • @ThisOldTrike
      @ThisOldTrike  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah man, I think just going slow and keeping organized and clean is the biggest part of the process. The tape trick that you'll see in the assembly video is key to keeping the seal undamaged. Then bleeding the air out after you put the oil back in is important and can be frustrating... just have to be patient.

    Great work with this video.
    That wrench 🔥🔥🔥.
    I have rebuilt 50+/- shocks. I still found this video very informative.
    Here is my contrbution: ATCs used ATF fluid from factory. I have read that the viscosity of shock fluids varies greatly from brand to brand 10W does not equal 10w. I dont know if we could actually feel the differences while riding though

    • @ThisOldTrike
      @ThisOldTrike  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah, that wrench was pretty trick! I could tell when we were recording that this was going to be an awesome resource for people for a long time. Maybe even the go-to shock rebuilding video?! I totally get what you're saying about fluid viscosity though... it is probably a negligible feel when it's all said and done.

    When removing bladders etc...try a rubber tipped air nozzle to pressurize the can a bit...

    The reason it’s called a banjo bolt, connection, is because the end of the hose tip looks like a banjo. (The part that the bolt goes through looks like a banjo)

      @@ThisOldTrike Also, The reason he had such a hard time removing the gas bladder was because of the vacuum created from pulling on the bladder. Kinda like a suction cup. A mechanic secret is to use a bike pump or any air pump for that matter. Connect it up to the Schrader valve (after you remove the retaining ring) and then as you very slowly pump... it will naturally spit out the bladder. You can see the cylinder pull the bladder back in in your video. He wasn't fighting the cylinder... he was fighting natural suction. Love your videos. Hopefully I'll make it to Trikefest this year.
