Nice to see a brief glimpse of Ken West. He was a very nice chap. In fact all the drivers, guards (I’ve fond memories of Ken McSporran) and other staff were a great bunch to work with. The drivers were very helpful to the CM&EE staff when we needed to visit Rowborough substation (just before Brading) and Sandown Sub ...double track there in my days) when they would stop and drop us off. They would always slow down at the substations in case we needed a lift back to the Control Room/Substation at Ryde St. John’s. Drivers Peter Harbour, Jim Hunneybun, Frankie Ash, Ginger Minter (very good at catching pheasants by opening the old front cab doors!) and Tony Tiltman, et al, and dear Jim Locke the fitter and friends from the Depot. We were also fortunate to have Joe Primmer as our track lineman...nothing too much for him to tackle on the conductor rail! In fact, all the Island Railwaymen were dedicated to their job and I was proud to have worked with them as an ‘Overner’ with them during my posting to the Island. Rob.

Hard to remember that I travelled on that line as a young kid, in 1962. No electrification back then and the trains went all the way to Ventnor via the Boniface Down tunnel. The Shaklin to Wroxall and Ventnor Town section closure in 1966 was a hardship to Ventnor, even though the station was perched at the top of the town ... and a long walk up from the beach.

About time the line was extended back to Ventnor!

and there should be a branch going through Newport, the county town, and westwards to Yarmouth and Totland and even a connection to Cowes.

25 years before these trains came to the IOW I used to travel this line on my way to St Catherine’s Home in Ventnor. This has made me feel as old as these trains....

  • @Captainpubwatch

Great video, don’t worry about those who complain about the music, what’s the alternative? Edit it with a long (maybe slowed shot) of the driver and chop part of the route out, and then get people moan not all the route is in it - or - just have silence. Either way you can’t win on YT.
I’m glad this was captured back in 1989 and also for the comments describing the staff on the island, the trains low centre of gravity and physics certainly make 40 mph feel like you’re belting along (a phenomenon similar to the C stock on the Underground - due to being so close up to the windscreen, the train physics and the motor/rheo noise, anything above 30 felt rather sprightly!)

Ah.... the familiar sound.... apart from the wierd sensation of “missing” current rail, the only jarring point for me is the 2 bell starting signal, I recall speaking to a new station guard when I was on the Northern Line and reminding him it was a tube train not a big red bus! 😂🤣.
Lovely machines, enjoyed my trips on them despite the fact that it was Morden-High Barnet-Morden via the city, would love to have had stretches like this to wind it up on tho 😁

Brings back memories. I used to attend boarding school in Ventnor from 1986 to 1995. Trains were ok but from pier head to shanklin , you could wait a hour for a bus to ventnor . Instead disembark at Ryde esplanade

What is the reason why the third rail switches which side of the track it is on every once in a while and sometimes frequently in these third rail systems?
