The adulation between them both is fantastic, especially this one and "How Can I Go On?" The way they looked at each other whilst performing is beautiful - they had such admiration for each other. Stunning vocals throughout the album, and this album is a Freddie Mercury showcase for his voice.

The song is not about the city, it a love letter to Montsy and is about Freddie meeting her for thr first time in Barcelona. Just listen to the words "Barcelona it was the first time that me met" "the moment that you stepped into the room, it took my breath away".
Freddie heard Montsy at Covent Garden in London and said she was the most beautiful thing he'd ever heard and that the whole World deserved to hear her, "I want all the World to hear you" is another lyric. Years later, he actually made it happen and Freddie with some help from friends wrote an entire album of duets for her.

  • @bettybaby63

This is a love letter by Freddie to “Montsy”. He idolized her.
The whole project was an amazing accomplishment. He thought they would record one song, & she said “no, let’s do an album!”
Freddie always joked, “oh shit, what have I gotten myself into.”
There is a whole album to appreciate. With one of the significant pieces being exercises in free love which was a demo, that became Ensuedo.

Montserrat was one of the premier sopranos of all time. In Spain, she was nicknamed ’La Superba,’ the superb. She was best known for her ability to sing very high notes very softly, which is exceedingly difficult to do, and maintain control.

Freddie wrote this because his dear friend wanted him to write a song about her home town of Barcelona.
this was in 1991 the year of Freddie's death and a peculiar thing happened to Freddie. The sicker he got and the closer to death he got the stronger his voice became, in some parts I dare say his vocals overpowered hers, and she is a legendary opera singer.
Freddie had a full 4 octave range and thats very rare for a singer.

It was a cherished experience because they both loved music. She said 'he is music'. (BTW the opera diva was with his parent's at the unveiling of Freddie Mercury's statue in Switzerland long after his death.) It all came to life after she asked him to compose a song to enter in the contest for official song for the 1992 Olympics being held in Barcelona. He wrote a song that would become “Ensueno” on their album, sang MONTSERRAT’s high soprano part to show her what he had written for her and sent it to her. After Barcelona was selected to host the 1992 Summer Olympics, Mercury was approached to write a song as a theme for the forthcoming games. The idea was to create a duet with Caballé, as she was from the city. He had been a long-standing admirer of her and she in turn grew to respect his talents very highly. The song was written by Freddie Mercury and Mike Moran. This obviously wasn't done AT the Olympics since Freddie died in 1991. Barcelona was created for the 1992 Olympic Games in the Spanish city, but recorded five years earlier and released on October 26, 1987.

Freddie Mercury fell in love with the voice of Montserrat Caballé when he heard her sing live in an opera. Later, on a TV show in Spain, Mercury commented that he was a fan of the lyrical singer. Caballé learned of the comment and the meeting of the two was arranged. Freddie and Montserrat spent the night singing, talking and soon became friends. At one point, Mercury suggested that they record a song together. And Caballé asks: One? How many songs does a rock album have? Mercury replied: Ten. And Montserrat concluded: So let's record ten. Mercury teamed up with songwriter Mike Moran and wrote all the tracks on the Barcelona album. The title song ended up being chosen as the theme for the 1992 Olympics in the Catalan city. In this clip, despite the presentation being live, due to the complexity of the song, Mercury and Caballé perform using the playback feature.

Freddie and Montserrat (who Freddie considered the greatest singer alive) became great friends recording the album "Barcelona". Freddie's nickname for her was Montsy.
It was Freddie who composed the song "Barcelona" for the 1992 Olympic games and it was Montserrat’s own brother Carles who suggested she sing at the Olympics with Freddie. After Freddie told her he would not be around for the Olympics, they recorded this video to play at the opening of the Games. (Montserrat and Freddie were so close, she was one of the select few invited to attend his funeral.)
Freddie was so nervous the first time he met Montserrat, he actually arrived early (Freddie was notoriously always 15 minutes late to meetings), He even prepared a gift for her. He composed, with Mike Moran, and recorded a song, called "Exercises in Free Love" - czcams.com/video/l8n52i_dWrg/video.html.
Montserrat loved the song so much that she asked Freddie's permission to sing it at her concert the next weekend at Covent Garden. Of course, he said yes.
Then Montserrat added lyrics to the "Exercises in Free" which was renamed as "Ensueno". Freddie and Montserrat recorded "Ensueno" for the Barcelona album. Here it is - czcams.com/video/DOySL4GYaDY/video.html.
FYI - Montserrat got Freddie to sing it in his natural baritone singing voice instead of the tenor he usually sang in.

👏👏👏 Thanks for this great reaction!
Freddie Mercury was so much more than a rock singer, he was a brilliant musician, an excellent singer, songwriter, storyteller. He had an eclectic musical taste and the range to sing operatic songs. Montserrat Caballé was one of the most famous opera divas of the last century, she was famous for her very high soft notes. Freddie and Montserrat became good friends very quickly, they adored each other and Montserrat was brave enough to take the risk to sing with a rock star, because she recognized the Musician in Freddie instantly. There are 2 more songs at La Nit The Golden Boy (that is even more dramatic) and How Can I Go On, worth to check them out. Freddie and his friend Mike Moran completed a full album with beautiful melodies for this golden duo.

Freddie loved opera and Montserrat Caballé was his favourite soprano, he thought she was an absolute diva. He requested to meet her and they became good friends. Then one evening, while Montserrat was in England they got together and wrote a song about Montserrat’s home city.

They were very close friends. She was one of the few persons who Freddie told his diagnosis of HIV/Aids. And she said he could have been an opera singer for sure. Admired him like he did her.
I love her voice. The control of la Superba (so she was called) was outstanding, especially in high pitch pianissimo. I like her more than Maria Callas for example.
Now they sing in heaven together again.

IMO, the best word to describe this performance is PASSION!!! Just look at Freddie and Montserrat interacting with each other; you can see the love between them. Just listen to their voices...such ecstasy!
Freddie attended an opera where Montserrat Caballe was performing, and he fell in love with her voice. His desire was to one day sing/perform with her. Besides being able to perform together, Freddie and Montserrat became very dear and loving friends. He trusted her with his secret of having HIV, which was only shared with very close friends. Montserrat convinced Freddie to sing in his natural baritone voice for this performance instead of his usual rock-tenor voice.
Sebs, if you're an opera fan, I highly suggest that you listen to every song on the Barcelona album/CD, but be sure to listen to the Special Edition (2012) as new material was added...in particular "Exercises in Free Love." That tract is pure Freddie, but you will think angels are singing (czcams.com/video/PtDyUgq5ick/video.html). The 2 tracts that compliment each other, "Guide Me Home" and "How Can I Go On" sounds like Freddie is singing about the end of his life...a true foreshadowing. The tract, "La Japonaise," was very special to Freddie. He had a deep affection for Japan and the Japanese people. Part of this song is written and sung in Japanese. Freddie wrote the Japanese lyrics. This album/CD is a collaboration with other musicians and lyricists, but it has Freddie's exquisite talents all through it.
This whole album/CD is a true magnum opus. Nothing can compare. RIP Montserrat Caballe and Freddie Mercury.
