Can Tourism Save Haiti?

  • Haiti: A New Hope: Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, suffering everything from devastating natural disasters to brutal dictatorships. Now, there are hopes that tourism could help it rise from the ashes.

“In the 60s, we were number one in tourism for this part of the world”, says Fritz Parets. “And then, it collapsed...” Parets is at the helm of a bold new venture: a 55-bedroom luxury hotel, part of a scheme to put the nation back on the touristic map. Staff are professionally trained and almost all Haitian. “I live thanks to tourism”, says plumber Islet Jean-François. “It really makes life better here! When tourists stop coming, everything collapses.” Yet Haiti remains impoverished. Years of intensive farming have exhausted the country’s soils, and education is chronically underfunded. Despite the nation’s problems, hotel group boss Charles Fombrun is proud of its rich history. “It’s the first black republic… We were at the base of the end of colonialism, the slave’s revolution. Independence!”

@@sherrisolomon8673 The name Haiti as it stands now draws up images of strive, mega poverty, constant political upheavals, gang violence and all the features of a failed state. Changing the name gives it a fresh page to start on and its citizens a new and renewed sense of identity.
Switching the official language from french to english will compliment this sense of new identity. It will strengthen ties to USA ,Britain and other english speaking countries who are in the position to act as major donors and attract investors with the trading capacity to catalyze Haiti's development. Rwanda ditched french as its official language after the 1994 genocide and now it is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa and a forerunner for Africa's new world order. Guess who is its largest donor now contributing more than half of it's foreign aid? Yes UK not France nor Belgium
Countries changing their name to take on new identity is not new a tall. From where I sit Haiti needs to completely undress, wear it's royal raiment and learn how to be a good actor in this well designed global political game.

@@wasua100 to be fair rwanda’s leadership “knew what he didn’t know” and had intentions of changing their position after the UN, france and belgium left them for dead after the genocide. Kagame looked at singapore’s model of development and sent others to copy the same, hence why one of its many nicknames is ‘singapore of africa’. The leadership made all the difference. True that french is no longer an official language but there’s a lot more rwandese that speak french then english. As, a haitian woman who lives on/off in rwanda, i can speak from experience. also, rwandan government invests a lot in tourism.I would love to see the increase in tourism in Haiti.

@@wasua100 But what about Haiti's creole culture and identity? Are they just supposed to throw that away or downplay it? I honestly don't think they need to throw everything away to get a fresh start. Any majority black country is going to be seen as less-than regardless but that doesn't stop Ghaha, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, Senegal, etc from improving their position in the world stage. Make Haiti mean something else. Don't throw away your identity to be more marketable.

Haiti was wonderful earlier until population out-ran the government's credibility and ability to manage.
    Haiti is AFRICA WEST.
    Haiti is marvellous.
It is not the "poorest", it is among the worst managed nations on Earth.
Having been involved with tourism throughout Haiti for fifty plus years we have watched the great, the good, and the stupid, happen in Haiti.
Tourism is one of the very best catalysts towards growing the NGP.
In the 70's if arrivals did not have a reserved room somewhere, it may have been chancy to sleep that night. The country then, was wildly successful without crime.
Today Haiti is undergoing a metamorphosis of sorts that does not take away from the country's attractions but does lend concern to when and where to visit.
However, Haiti is a bargain, and forgiving the detractions caused by the lack of security, it is a destination of shocking wonder.
But then, let's be real, and be very careful.
