  • On July 7, Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in his home. His death is likely to further disrupt the security situation in Port-au-Prince, where entire neighborhoods are controlled by gangs with alleged links to Moise’s government. VICE News spends time with the police and the gangs battling it out in Haiti’s capital.

The Haitian president was corrupt. But the problem with a corrupt leader is that the leader is powerless when someone offers his men more money than he can offer. His guards were clearly bribed, but this is the own presidents fault for creating the opportunity for that to happen. He gave drug gangs assault rifles to secure his power. He was bringing in a law that said the president could not face any legal consequences for any crime. He used gangs to intimidate protesters over the last two years. He caused his own problems by trying to consolidate thuggish, draconian power.

This is how broken this failed state is. How much you can let your own population be extorted and abused?
