You really can't be mad at Obi Wan for not revealing the complicated truth to Luke early on, when his father Vader played a huge part in killing the Jedi off, also killing Luke's mother Padme, the younglings, etc. If Obi Wan never hid Luke and Leia away from the Empire, there wouldn't be a SW saga. After Anakin turns evil, Obi Wan basically becomes the godfather of the Skywalker twins, watching over them from a distance. That shows that he truly cared about Anakin all along, who was like his younger brother all that time.

So while Leia is a strong female leader like her mother she's easily agitated and quick with sarcastic comments like her father. @@SteveLeser He left him for dead and didn't confirm the kill because he couldn't bear to watch, or finish him off. He found out within the next ten years (as of the current Kenobi series) that Vader was not dead, so by the time this happens in the original trilogy, Obi-Wan had known for a long time, since Leia and Luke were still around 10, that he did not kill him on Mustafar. Obi-Wan reached out and reached out and begged him on Mustafar and it was just not enough to make Anakin see that what he was doing was wrong. In the end, the only thing that could save him was his love for Padme, and the children that it brought into the galaxy. Luke truly inherited her personality, he never gave up on him even after their first duel. I think Vader saw Padme in him, and it truly brought Anakin back. If you ask me, it was just as much Padme as it was Luke that brought him back to the light.

So instead I kept you hidden for two decades and then misled you about Vader because tricking his own son into committing patricide just somehow seemed less painful than killing my old friend and student myself."
"As for your sister, well, she was a *girl*, and a princess, despite the fact that she was a secret rebel since her mid-teens and would have probably been easier to train. It just seemed preferable to keep her as a safely anonymous backup in case you screwed up. Oh, and while I can chime in from the afterlife whenever I think it's necessary, I didn't feel I had to when you two got to first base. What can I say? We old school Jedi were raised in what amounted to a giant monastery. Our attitude towards sexual morality is understandably messed up. It does *not* mean to follow *any* random impulse that enters that empty little head of yours! Because if you do you'll be more dangerous than an army of drunken frat boys with stun rifles at Spring Break on Zeltros!
Likewise, when I say: "trust your instincts", I am again referring to the instinctive guidance that you receive through the Force. The instincts that allowed you to pod race when no other human could. *Not* your instinct to bone smoking hot politicians, no matter how much of a tease they are when it comes to their wardrobe and playing hard to get even when they're shamelessly flirting with you. That's bad, and could lead to you violating the Jedi code and marrying in your late-teens like the Outer Rim hick you are!
By choosing the life of the Jedi, a hard life, literally, you're not allowed to marry or fall in love. Although some strange bearded guy who I *think* was the creator of the Jedi Order *did* say that we can have casual sex so long as there is no emotional attachment. No, you don't need to back away. That's what I keep Obi-Wan around for. *You* should watch out for aged ephebophiles who invite you to the Mon Calamari water ballet and want to sit alone with you. I just have a sense that may be a problem you'll run into...

Like here obi wan was guilt tripping luke into thinking the only choice he had was to kill his own father or everyone else would die. But Luke found another way. Qui gon will always be the wisest jedi in my eyes. He was one of the few that understood true balance in the force was to have both light and dark side inside yourself but not to be consumed by one or the other. "Bury your feelings deep, they give you power but they could be used to serve the emperor". Obi-wan knows this very well because he witnessed this exact thing happen to Anakin. Vader murdering his father, Obi-wan heard from Vader himself that he killed him. All Obi-wan does at that point is pity him because he knows whatever is left of Anakin is gone. He was no farther gone by the end of Return of the Jedi than he was the day he was defeated on Mustafar, Obi-Wan never wanted Anakin to die. He knew that if even Luke, someone who was still very new to the force and searching the feelings of others, could still see the good in him, then it must still be there. Practically speaking Vader did have to die in order to restore balance. Luke found a way to save him from the Dark Side without having to forsake his own values and kill him, himself. He knew deep down that his father would not be able to coexist, with all the things he had done, and his father was quite old, living mostly off of the machines. He was tired. Luke did what both Yoda and Obi-Wan missed AND failed to prevent, he didn't have the shroud of the dark side blinding him as the Jedi did, so he found another way. Much like how Anakin always went out of his way to find a better solution in every situation. The one they needed to kill was Darth Sidious, and Luke couldn't beat Sidious because he wasn't experienced enough to defend against Force lightning. What they needed all along was what Luke finally resolved to do--find a way to turn Vader back to the light side, because as Anakin, he was strong enough to kill Sidious. If Luke had killed Vader and let Sidious live, he'd just find a new apprentice. He'd already had three.

Another reason Obi-Wan felt only Luke was capable of defeating Vader is because he knew Vader wouldn't kill Luke. Vader toyed with Luke in the first fight when he could have killed him easily and even had Luke in his grips and still refused to so in Return. I think Darth Vader's death isn't entirely killing somebody, but to kill off the personality, therefore sparing anakin's life. Luke entirely believed he could do it.
In ESB, when Luke cut off the fake vader's head he saw his own face. It probably meant that if Luke were to go and kill Darth Vader then he would lose himself doing it. Probably what Yoda had feared that would bring Luke to the dark side of the force.

Obi Wan had no hopes on Anakin after what he had saw in the Jedi Temple's holorecord. Considering even his discovery that Anakin had his affairs with Padmé. Maybe Obi would forgive Anakin for the lies about Padmé, but not about the murder of Mace Windu and the younglings. Obi Wan found himself deeply frustrated, and the only feeling he had in his body was Justice for those deaths. His last hope was to see Anakin in agony and suffering for the deaths he had caused by menace of Palpatine, not the confiant hero "that brought peace and security to the new Empire" as he had found on Mustafar. Padmés torture was truly the end for him.

"I took it upon myself to train him" -- Nope, you were honour bound to train him because your master made you, and you had previously agreed with the council it was probably not a good idea.
"I thought I could train him better than Yoda" -- At no point was Yoda going to train him, so any comparison here is just bizarre and redundant?
from R2D2s message: "You served under my father during the clone wars" --- To word it like that is reeeally stretching the reality. It's like saying to David Beckham: "You served under my father (one of the team physios) during the Premier League.
"Your Uncle didn't agree with your father's ideal and thought he shouldn't have gotten involved" --- Umm, yeah those brother's didn't see eye to eye throughout their long childhood together!?
Lucas probably could've spent the time to write 2 sequels to his overnight phenomenon that made all of the above make sense and still be a compelling and interesting trilogy... but it was probably too much like hard work for him and he had deadlines and needed to get something "flashy", "twisty" and "exciting" made in double quick time. Once he realised he could do a lot more with Star Wars than he originally alludes to in his "test movie", his only option to preserve an absolute sense of brilliant narrative quality is to start again from scratch and reshoot A New Hope. That wasn't gonna happen, so he was happy to retcon as he went along whilst printing off the vast amount of money he was almost guaranteed to make anyway....

  • @alexanderpytko5394
    @alexanderpytko5394 Před 10 lety +44

This conversation was actually much longer then shown.
After Obi-Wan said that many truths depend on points of view, he said,"I don't blame you for being angry. If I was wrong with what I did, it wouldn't be the first time. You see what happened to your father was my fault."
After Luke says, "There is still good in him," Ben says, "I also thought that your father could be turned back to the good side. It couldn't be done. He's more machine now than man. Twisted and evil."
After Ben says, "You can not escape your destiny," Luke says, "I tried to stop him once. I couldn't do it." Ben tells him that the reason Luke couldn't stop Vader before was because he was so impatient to go off and face him. Ben says that if he had stayed here with Yoda and completed the training, he would've been prepared to face Vader. Luke, in his defense, says, "But I had to help my friends." Ben then says, "And did you help them? It was THEY who had to save YOU. You accomplished very little by rushing back, prematurely, I fear." Luke says with sadness that he did find out Darth Vader was his father. Ben tells Luke that he has been able to pass the line that his father was unable to pass and become calm and patient. THEN, Ben says, "You must face Darth Vader, again."
After Ben says that Luke's feelings do him credit but could be made to serve the emperor, there was more that was said. Ben explains to Luke, "When your father left, he didn't know your mother was pregnant. Your mother and I knew he would find out eventually. We wanted to keep both of you safe as possible for as long as possible. So I took you to live with Owen on Tatooine...and your mother took Leia to live as the daughter of Senator Organa on Alderaan."
Luke says, "You can't let her get involved now, Ben. Vader will destroy her."
Ben says, "She hasn't been trained in the ways of the Jedi the way you have, Luke...but the force is strong with her. As it is with everyone in your family. There's no avoiding this battle. You must face and destroy Vader!"
    Scene then ends.
In the book, Ben tells Luke that when Anakin turned to the dark side, the 2 of them fought each other and Anakin fell into a molten pit. Ben says that when Anakin clawed his way out of the pit, he was forever changed and scarred. His anger had been burned into him. Ben says that all these years, Vader has been kept alive by machinary and his own evil desires.

Luke: I can't kill my own father.
Obi-Wan: Then the emperor has already won.
Luke: Only a sith deals in absolutes.

Poor Luke, such a burden to bear along with being borderline manipulated by people who are supposed to be your allies (i.e. The Jedi).

Yet he shoulders the responsibility forced upon him by his predecessor anyways. He was never the first choice to save the Galaxy from the Sith.
Yet he did it anyways. And for that, I will always love and look up to Luke Skywalker.

This video should have been in return of the Jedi some people can hate the prequels I found them entertaining. This video is a good example to know more on how Luke Skywalker learned more about his life and looking back on what happened before.
