I don't think I've seen, in any media, two actors playing the same character that work together so well. When I see Ewan or Alec, I think "Obi-Wan." Not "as he was in the prequels," or "in the OT," just Obi-Wan. The same person, years apart. And I think it speaks to just how well these two actors play their parts, especially Alec Guinness' reactions to movies that didn't exist yet.

Fun fact, you can see anakin mouth the words “help me” which was originally included in the film but later cut out. Yet they left the mouth movement in, as sort of an Easter egg. It was meant to represent the torn nature, and how anakin was alive still, yet Vader was suppressing him. Anakin never stopped loving his master, even burning alive and de-limbed. Yet Vader took him over. Rather, mental illness took over. How many good men were tormented over the course of history just like that?
I feel so sad every time I see Anakin’s turn the dark side
Every time I feel the pain of Obi-wan. Losing everything from his lover to his brother. Yet he still maintains a pained charm. If only he could’ve saved Anakin

@@ChismTuggle May the Force be with you as well
I know Alec Guinness hated being known for the role of Kenobi, but this scene is so well-done. He elevated Star Wars the way Patrick Stewart later elevated Trek.
This is why the prequels were so amazing for those of us that had grown up with only the original 3. We knew there was a horrific story behind Anakin/Vadars story. To actually SEE the transition from good to evil; to see the heart break that Padme and Obi-Wan went through; to watch Yoda drop his staff when he felt so many die... I can't tell you what that was like, after so many years of only knowing of the tragedies.
Anakin: "How well would you sleep knowing I failed you?"
Obi Wan: "Not very well I imagine, luckily that isn't true and never will be."
_19 years later he's aged 30 years and is constantly having flashbacks_
❤
“I don’t recall ever owning a droid” he says just after being able to translate R2’s beeps
...Notice I didn't include that part ;)
Not owning a droid wouldn't have stopped him from learning to understand droids.
Also wasn’t R2 primarily Anakin’s droid during the Clone Wars? He flew with him to Mustafar. Seems like Obi had R4 mostly
Obi-Wan doesn't say he doesn't recognize R2-D2, he says he never owned him, which is the case, R2-D2 was the owner of the Republic and he spent more time with Padme and Anakin than with Obi-Wan.
The PTSD acting by Sir Alec Guinness was not really an act. He was a combat veteran of WWII, and in that time he had seen the horrors of war. He commanded a Landing Craft Infantry at the Allied invasion of Sicily, and later ferried supplies and agents to the Yugoslav partisans in the eastern Mediterranean theater. When talking about the Clone Wars and the Rise of the Empire, he was drawing on the emotions of his own experiences. He made it feel real because it was real. As a combat veteran myself, I know those memories haunted him until his last breath. That is something which will never go away, no matter how much counseling you have or medication you take.
Thank you for your service to our country. I could not see well enough even to drive a car, so they would not train me for military duty. Imagine me at the gunnery range. "No, Sergeant? What target, sir?"
Such suffering is NOT the "mental illness"--that is, a flaw in, a shortcoming of, the sufferer-- modern western culture has made of it. The solution is for those who know firsthand this hurt of the mind and the soul help those who follow on later, how to process their experiences and the lingering memories.
Are we really just going to ignore the fact that at the start of the video, Obi-Wan said “Hello there!”
This is an absolutely brilliant cut. Alec Guiness' performance is so perfect. Major sad feels repeatedly with all the weight of the history and the emotion. The footage of Kenobi having to kill his brothers in arms is emotionally brutal. The story of the clones is utterly tragic.
Thrilled you enjoyed. I was never quite satisfied with the edits of this idea I had found previously...so I decided to make my own! Haha. I wanted one that truly felt complete, and captured the whole range of emotions required.

Stupid Jedi council if they would've listen to anakin in the first place but ah well I blame mace windu

@@bbp2930 yup. They chose the republic over the force.
Just the fact that he still called Anikan his 'friend', after everything he's been through. The pain still haunts him, but he is still able to remember Anikan before he turned, and that's the result of the grieving process.
This is beautiful. Obi-Wan is my favorite Star Wars character because, while he isn't the main protagonist of any of the movies, he's always there for those who are. He's solid as a rock in the face of opposition. When Anakin turns evil, Obi-Wan stays true to what he knows is right. Even though he has to live in exile and make all kinds of sacrifices, he makes sure that Luke and Leia are okay. In the end, he sacrifces himself to help Luke. Luke gets the credit for blowing up the Death Star and saving the galaxy, but if it weren't for Obi-Wan's sacfrice that never would have happened.
I love this video because it brings to life for us the kind of hell that Obi-Wan must have endured. First off, he watched his friend and mentor Qui-Gon get killed. Then he watched his lover die in the Clone Wars. To top it al off, he's in a position of power and prestige on the Jedi Council in ROTS only to have the entire galaxy that he's fought to protect turn against him and believe he's a traitor. His clone friends try to kill him, he sees the footage of his friend and brother Anakin bowing before Darth Sidious, and slaughtering the younglings. Then he's forced to fight Anakin, only to watch him burning up while screaming "I HATE YOU!"
How much can one heart take? He must have gone through hell after going into hiding on Tatooine. I'm excited to see the Kenobi series when it comes out, but at the same time I'm terrified; I really hope they do justice to the PTSD that Obi-Wan would have been enduring.
Beautifully said. You reflected my same sentiment in making this video. No other version fully captured what you've just typed, so I decided there had to be a way. Thanks for watching.
This is why a "Kenobi" stand-alone film (or maybe series) could be a success, although it would have to be even deeper than "Revenge" - than any other "Star Wars" film we've ever seen. If the right director (Filoni/Favreau, possibly; possibly Villeneuve) could be persuaded to make it, it could win Academy Awards.
@@SeanRee let's see how the Kenobi series turns out

I love how Alec Guinness act, you can feel all the terrible memories even if the prequels where not filmed yet. I just learned that the full scenario was already written so it was surely easier for Alec Guinness but somehow it feels like obi-wan remember precisely the mustafar fight when luke asks him how anakin died, in his eyes you can feel him replaying the whole scene, it's just incredible. (maybe i'm influenced by the edit but it's a great scene anyway)
It certainly helps that Alec Guiness fought in WW2
"How did my Father die?"
"I had the High ground, it was over, he didn't listen"
"What?"
"Nothing"
I can relate to how Obi-Wan feels. It's hard to watch someone you love turn into something else. You hate what they've become, but at the same time you still love them, and you wish they'd come to their senses before it's too late. It hurts even more when you're the one who has to put them in their place, because you know that they'll resent you for it. Despite the fact that it had to be done.
It seems that you have a dear friend, or family member, that suffers from addiction.
@@dickrichards5254 He's not an addict but he definitely has problems.
Goddamn is the dark side a wonderful metaphor for addiction regardless of your own experience
What's sadder is that I am arguably the darker person. Yet, my former friend and her sister who were both like sisters to me was destroyed by the inability to get over her grandfather's death and so it led to them choosing the life of addiction. I fight constantly to keep my darkness under control and only unleash it under the right circumstances while they seemed to have given into it. Now, I keep them at arms lengths, have to force up barriers, and give an apathetic approach despite them being childhood friends.
I know a new hope came out long before the prequels, but I love how, they showed Alec Guinness looking to the right when Luke asked how he died, then showed young Obi wan looking to right as soon Anakin started to catch on fire. Old Obi wan, making a muscle memory to what happened, not being able to tell Luke exactly as it was horrifying for him.
Star Wars was so pure before Disney perverted it. Not one person can say Disney made Star Wars better.
Remembering dark times in your life is always hard...
So is wondering if the future will be darker than the present. Which increasingly seems to be the case...
4:23 and 4:29 Ben's face.. it's like he felt the flames, same as Anakin did. He remembers it all, and still feels it to the present day.
How come order 66 is not included
Man, this was the first time I noticed Anakin slaughtered the younglings in the Jedi Council Room, where the oldest wisest Jedi met... where they felt safe...
YOU'RE TEARING MY HEART OUT
The worst is the first youngling he kills actually paid him the respect of calling him master :( I imagine that was a twist in what remained of anakins soul that he knew he had to purge..
The Jedi teach that once you step down the dark path then forever will it dominate your destiny, yet the force is clearly shown in the movies that if anything it the light that will always try to reach you!
Whoever edited together the first episode of the Obi-Wan show definitely watched this… seeing an active shooter situation in Star Wars days after Uvalde was heartbreaking but also the easiest most relevant and uncontroversial political statement Star Wars could ever have made.
No character has suffer like Obi-Wan.

This video shows how perfectly planned and well fore-thought the whole star wars saga already was decades before the prequels were filmed. You may dislike the prequels for many reasons but you can't say they do not tell a beautiful and complete story together with the originals. And keeping that in mind, the sequels are just a slap in the face for all those who care about anything more than just mindless sci-fi crap when it comes to a star wars movie. Sure, the sequels have better special effects than prequels and originals altogether, but I'd rather watch a sci-fi movie with no special effects at all but with a beautiful story, than watch a crap movie with a ton of modern special effects and no story behind.

I love how Alec Guinness depicts someone how has been through so much, and with the prequels, and obi wan Kenobi, it helped complete obi wans character. And Guinnesses face when he tells Luke about his father, really means it taunts him. I can not wonder how bad it would feel in obi wans place.
Alec Guinness never knew how successful this franchise would be yet the casting for Obi Wan and telling his story has been absolutely perfect. The editing here fits into how Obi Wan remembered the Clone Wars, his brother/best friend, all before the dark times. Acting such as this comes only once a generation
When Luke says obi wan Kenobi and the music starts I get the chills

You can see the horror and flashbacks in Alec guinness's eyes when Luke asks " how did my father die" İts brilliant acting
Now it needs the part from KENOBI when Anakin/Vader tells Obi Wan "You did not kill Anakin Skywalker...I did" and then Obi Wan tells Luke "He betrayed and murdered your father". That way it does solidify the whole excuse of "What I told you was true, from a certain point of view" in Episode 6
All those years of betrayal, solitude and watching everything you have stood for and cared about fall, Obi Wan has not lost his charisma and there is still hope in him. A true Jedi kingt and a good man
Anakin’s Dark Deeds from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith is one of my favorite scores of all Star Wars. Much love and respect 🫡 to John Williams who provided such phenomenal scores and soundtracks for all nine Star Wars films 1977-2019
This is one of the very few videos that actually made me cry 🥲 Being in my thirties, I grew up with the remastered originals and the prequel trilogy. It has been a huge part of my childhood and this video perfectly expresses the whole tragedy that Anakin's life and his friendship with Obi-Wan has been.
That means so much. Thank you brother.

"You fought in the Second World War?"
"Yes. I was once an LCI commander, same as your father."
Alec Guiness's facial expressions as he's remembering work sooo well!! Who'd have thought 20 years earlier this would have connected together like this! Amazing! 😍
Bro once kenobi series is finished you better do a updated version I literally come back to this every year around this time still one the best Star Wars edit in my opinion
Heck yeah man. I may just do it ;)
Yea please that is such a kick ass idea,
@@ChismTuggle you have to do it 100%
Nah. Kenobi series breaks a lot of the continuity many times over.
Man, that music. 🥺 And the tragedy of Anakin is just so, so sad 😞 😔
After Kenobi this hits even harder
watching the prequels makes obi wans character so much better for a new hope
