- Every year, Randy Newberg and his son Matthew carve out time in their calendar to go hunting together. This year, Matthew drew an elk tag in Wyoming along with his great uncle Larry. Unfortunately, due to medical reasons, Larry wasn't able to join this year.
Matthew and Randy decide to make the most of it, and are joined by their friend Buzz Hettick. Throughout the hunt, they glass up plenty of mature bull elk. Matthew stays patient and waits to find one that feels right to him.
Eventually they glass up a huge bull elk, that gets Matthew pretty excited. They make a play and are able to get within rifle range and just have to wait for the bull to stand up from his bed and present Matthew a good shot opportunity.

Father and son hunting together, it doesn't get better than that.
Just a monster! Congratulations Mathew, but you need to calm down just a touch. 😂
It is part of his schtick. He loves to see me get wound up while he acts like Joe Cool.
Cannot believe how big that thing is. Cheers guys what a special trip for your family.
What a Beast!
Congratulations
The Helen Keller of elk...wow lol I died inside😂
Randy you are a class act and an exceptional person. My dad and I lay the phones down and hunt together all the time. Greatest memories of life come from hunting with him and sharing the outdoors and public lands.
Enjoy those moments. They pass too quickly. Good luck this season.
Matthew optimizes the saying that slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Great bull!
Totally agree! He gets more joy in seeing me worked up than he does in actually shooting the elk.
@@Fresh_Tracks That’s funny!
Downhill shot strikes again. Spined it. Nice follow up shot.
Incredible Bull!
Love Pop's enthusiasm. I have a 14 yo daughter and we just started our hunting life together. For the past 6 years she has been an avid target shooter, but now it's on to the big game here in AZ. If you ever sponsor an event for youth, please let your channel know. We would love to continue to learn, grow, and give back to our AZ hunting families.
Don’t apologize for your excitement for your son. I am the exact same way it’s just a thrill to be with sons and daughters out hunting and sharing moments like that.
Thank you.
KoDos you two. Nothing better than Farther and Son hunting together. That's the best whether you bag a bull or a buck whatever Father and sons The Best Time ever
This is awesome! As you described at the end, my life has had me going in my own directions, but now after about 13 years I've been finally getting back out hunting, and been calling my dad up to go on joint hunts with him, and it's been making me feel like i was a kid again! Father son hunts are the best!
Enjoy those hunts. Hope you have many of them.
i've grown to appreciate matthews style
Great job, how wonderful it is to share moments like that with family and friends. Your the man Randy.
This is one of my favorite videos. Next week I'm going up to Maine with my dad and uncle for our annual whitetail hunt and I can't wait! Mathew is one cool cucumber. Great job and congratulations to all of you!
a proud father moment! I hope to experience this one day with my son.
BLESS YOU ! Time with family is priceless !!!!👍
I love the relationship you and your son have. Thanks for sharing the experience with us.
It is the most special of times when we are hunting together.
I have been looking forward to this video for some time. After watching Matthew’s moose hunt video last year, it was evident that this father and son hunting adventure will be a continuing saga that I, as a father of adult hunters, can keenly appreciate. Great job, Randy and Matthew! And as always, Marcus’s camera work was stellar. Thank you all.
Thanks for watching. These are the most special times of my seasons.
i love that he didnt take a 450 shot. good job
Beautiful memories for you and your son!
Love this! Great Bull! Congratulations Mathew!
What a nice young man. Congrats on a bull of a lifetime!
Loved seeing all the throwback pictures at the end👍🏼I’m making those memories with my son now
Keep doing it. The times go by too fast.
Congratulations fellas. Beautiful bull
Congratulations!! Mathew you are one lucky guy!!
Congratulations Mathew on a magnificent animal.
Well done all around! Hunting with family can't be beat.
Thanks for sharing this hunt Randy. Thanks for showing the part about your excitement. As a father, I would have done the same thing...I have done the same thing. What a thrill as a dad! One of your best videos for sure...
Matthew sometimes looks at me like I've lost my mind when I get all excited about his success. We have a ton of fun together.
Watched this on Amazon and now here i think 3 times. Enjoy the content.
Wow, what a great hunt. Congrats, Mahalo and Aloha from the Big Isle "🤙"
My own All Purpose Boy and I don't get to hunt together near as much as we did when he was at home, but we still never pass up a chance to go on adventures.....even if only for a couple hours. Great hunt, great video, and great memory for you two!
You know, as do I, that those times when they are home go too fast.
Awesome man ! Love it !
Good for you on passing a shot you didn't feel comfortable with.Nice bull!
Great elk Matt 🌞
Yet again another great video. Always look forward to seeing you two hunt together.
I never got to hunt with my father (lots of fishing however) but make sure to live those lost memories with my own kids in the field. In fact, your videos of WY adventures are one of the reasons we packed up and moved 900 miles to WY 6 months ago. We can’t wait for next fall to finally be residents and be able to hunt. My 2 boys are ready to get after it.
Too bad Jerry’s donuts is closed down or I’d buy y’all some donuts on one of your stops in town.
Keep up the great videos and happy hunting.
I hope you and your boys get out and do as much hunting as possible. They will be your most fond memories.
Another awsome hunt and awsome cinematography. God bless you guys.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Beautiful bull congratulations Mathew. Randy I love your spirit you are just like a kid in a candy store with all those bulls it makes me laugh how you want him to shoot one and he is just taking pictures lol
He loves to jerk my chain when we are out hunting. Off camera, he is laughing his butt off at my expense.
Wow, what a bull! Come on Mathew, let's see a victory dance...I know it's in there. 😏
It is in there. He leaves that level of celebration for his old man, as I have more than enough to go around.
I'm pretty sure this old watch it before Randy looking for you hunting in 2019 thanks fun watching anyway 😎
just awesome
Great video, in my back yard. I even know that little hidey hole badland you dropped the bull in. Funny when you know the camera guy is avoiding wind turbines 😂.
What unit is your "yard" sir?
When your son passes on 330+ bulls because he wants to spend more time hunting with you...you know you've done a lot right, and gotten very lucky on top of it.
Glad to see this one unfold again.
That is a BIG BULL! Congrats. Packout must have sucked. :D Cheers, C.
One of my favorite episodes, usually the ones with Mathew are. I get it, I enjoy hunting with my Dad and my brothers. I hope that Uncle Larry is able to go out this year, I know that is in the plans since Wyoming let him transfer it to this year with their medical rule. I should have bought an elk pref point yesterday, but I did get one for mule deer and especially pronghorn. After watching this 3 different times (YT day by day, Amazon and now on YT) and Michael's hunt in Wyoming, makes me wish I did buy that elk preference point and chase them in Wyoming, even though it is one of the more expensive states as far as elk tags go. 84 bulls the first day that is crazy. I hope that Mathew will be able to go hunting next fall and you two chase some Rosies in Oregon.
Thanks for watching. We hope to have Uncle Larry there this year, but we won't know until next week whether or not his docs will allow it.
@@Fresh_Tracks you are welcome. I hope and pray that he gets the Green Light to GO. I was listening to the podcast about Uncle Mike's hunt in New Mexico. That was a tough miss. I know you really want to take two of many Uncles out in the same year.
Another video where I'm jealous of how much you get too hunt. I'm green with envy again.
Congrats on a nice bull
Awesome bull.
Wow!!!
God bless you all.
Great vedio.😁👍👊🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Randy your absolutely right about just how precious those moments with your son in the field are.
My Dad was my hero growing up as a little boy. I was always excited when he returned from a hunting or fishing trip. I wanted to see what he shot, and to sit at his side and intently listen as he recaptured the moments leading up to him pulling the trigger.
I “ALWAYS” believed that one day we would share a moment like you and your son shared in this video hunting ELK.
Yes we shared many a deer and a Spike Bull or a Cow Elk together, but never a Bull like you guys just got. It was my Dads life long dream to have that moment with me in the woods before he died and it just never materialized.
Dad passed away this May and now I look to one day sharing a moment with my son but that too doesn’t seem possible as Jared’s interest in hunting isn’t like mine.
The only way we would have a chance would be to go pay big bucks to some outfitter which I can’t afford.
Thanks for sharing your hunting memories with all of us who Love the outdoors Randy.
Your The Best
Bryan
My condolences about the loss of you father. I hope your son finds interest in hunting and you can share some times with him. Or if not hunting, some other activity that will build special memories for the two of you.
Thanks
I can't wait for those days with my kids. Only a couple more years to go. I take them with me now, however, they are only 10 and 7.
I shot my first mulie at 10 years old, with a winchester 88 in 308. My second at 11. Don't underestimate your kids.
Great Bull Mathew
all i can say is Awesome!!!!!!
How to explain what hunting is for me and my dad through one video.. thank you Randy
I live in BC Canada and I can tel you I've never seen anything like this before, out of all the hunters I know only a very small hand full of them have ever tagged an elk. This year I hunted for 8 days straight and saw 2, one was a 5x5 bull and i got my first elk after hunting them for 3 years. To think Mathew would turn down a 330" bull is absolute un thinkable to me lol where I live you get one chance per season at a bull and if you don't take it you're probably going home empty handed.
Agree. He has done this on other hunting trips. Check his face and eyes when Dad is shaking his hand. No emotion.
What a great way to use all those draw points . A hunt filled with great bulls from the beginning to the end . Randy you raised a level headed young man. Cool as a cucumber. What was the cost of this hunt ? All your points . Time spent hunting with friends and family. Priceless ! Smoker bull !
must be nice to have alot of animals to SEE before the take.
It was a special hunt, for sure.
Did Matthew get you on that "0" bulls bigger?
Great name! 1st book/writter of the New Convenient- very good!
Thx big R-
More Michael Parente! He cracks me up
Nice
If that vid. doesn't get you excited your not an elk hunter. Congrats Matthew. : )
That's the biggest elk I have ever seen. What was the caliber used and what bullets were also used?
I got my first bull this year I’m 12 and I missed half the season because I didn’t turn 12 till half way through the season but anyway it was only 300 310 but to me it was a monster
The bull scored out to? Whats its estimated live weight? Aged it to be? Great hunt!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👌🏻
Lost my dad this year. I will treasure my one whitetail I shot with him in the blind. Now I have 4 boys to get hunting with. All we have around central Ohio is public land we lost the private we had. Public land is seriously overhunted so I can't comprehend not having people walking around spoiling the hunt. Had my oldest in the blind for the last several years and still not a shot. It's hard to provide for the family on a single income and nowhere to hunt!
I hope you find some places to take your boys.
What a hog!
2 questions.
How many points does it take to max out in Wyoming?
What mittens are those that randy is wearing?
Great video!
Randy could I interest you in an Ice Castle King Castle? You can camp out of a Ice Castle but you can't fish out of a Camper.
What a toad!
What unit was this?
And how many points did it take?
Why do you put a pole between the antlers?
Randy, noticed in a lot of the older pictures on this vid, you wore glasses. Did you get lasik done?
Yup, got Lasik in 2007. Best money I ever spent, even 12 years late.
@@Fresh_Tracks I've thought about Lasik. Heard some bad stories though too.
I wish CZcamsrs would tell you the unit right from the get go.
No way
What area were you hunting
First shot was a bit high second was great
What caliber
I don't know but I looked in his face and felt like he wanted to cry
he didn't want to kill that elk
he was enjoying watching him
just for a few seconds and then it was gone
you can ask him
I don't know but it was written all over his face
That would be the wrong impression.
@@Fresh_Tracks
Well, I guess I got it wrong but if you watch his face right after he placed the shot!
I don't know
What was he thinking?
Hells canyon 6.5?
brandon bergmann pretty sure they shoot .30 caliber Howas
What unit is this???
Out of respect for other hunters who hunt/apply in places we hunt, we don't give unit numbers or precise locations. Sorry about that. Hope you understand.
Ya, I figured that would be the response. I made my first hunt in Wyoming this fall. Picked unit 67 and spent most of my time looking over my shoulder for grizzly bears.
Randy you should look into the Xplore model Off Road capable camper trailer. Its rated to -40 as well. Then you can hunt in style and comfort.
Michael please don't edit out some of the important info
Helo
Sorry randy but if that was my kid, i would think twice about next year and give him 4 years of going without to teach him appreciation. I have guided probono many i will not again.
Just curious.....why is Matthew carrying the extra weight of a bipod on his rifle and takes the shot from on top of a back pack? Didn't make a lot of sense to me.
Maybe the bipod was too long/tall for that particular shot....
Different shooting scenarios call for different equipment.
@@Longtrailside obviously. Didn't answer the question.
Because the situation did not allow him to sit upright and utilize a bipod without being skylined. The pack gave him just enough elevation to get above the stuff in front of his barrel. He has shot a lot of animals. If he would have been in a different set up or situation, he likely would have used the bipod. Just never know until the setup happens. He has shot a lot of animals off a bipod.
@@Fresh_Tracks Thanks! Hard to tell from the perspective of the camera.
Well Randy seems you didn't raise a yung man, being a full. Congratulations.
