  • Do you wish you could wear beanies but every single one you've tried ends up looking bad on you? Well, don't worry! You are not alone. Beanies are a really tricky thing to get right. Even when you know exactly what style suits you best, that still doesn't mean every hat in that style is going to look good on you. Anyway, in this video, I give you my tips when it comes to shopping for a beanie, and hopefully, by the end of the video, you'll know what to look out for.

As a knitter who has made many beanies, I have 2 contributions
    1) the seamless construction, which is rare in 'commercial' beanies, but common in handknit ones, looks far neater and is more flattering (in my opinion)
    2) I have made the same beanie pattern 4 times now in different yarns and they are VERY different. Yarn fibre, weight and construction all significantly affects how a beanie looks

1x1 rib stitch. Adds elasticity and allows for a wider range of head sizes being accommodated by one product. The beige hat is knit in a finer yarn than the second one which means it's a bit thinner, sleeker looking, has more drape (not as stiff if a fabric) and doesn't add too much width when cuffed. The second one is just bulkier looking and because it's a thicker fabric it probably doesn't want to lay as nicely on the head.

Several people suggest that the style of knit that you like is called "ribbed," but I think what you really like is the fact that the knitting is adjusted to wrap around the end of the segment of the beanie to be parallel to the seam. This makes the seam much neater and it will lie flatter than if the segments of the hat are simply sewn against each other, as in the case of the cheap beanie I'm wearing at the moment. This technique is called "fully fashioned," indicating that the segments are knit into their final form, not merely cut. You'll see it on the shoulders of sweaters, too, if they are well made.

If the environment doesn't warrant additional head warmth or sun shielding than I just go about my business sans head covering.

I am @hatsbyjeanne and I've hand knit & donated hundreds beanies/toques/ hats for soldiers, sailors and veterans (through Warmth For Warriors, and Hats For Sailors). I typically knit hats 9" high and they can be pulled down snug and cover the ears (good under a helmet) or slightly higher, if preferred, for fashion. One thing you didn't mention was fiber. Choose natural fibers. I use 100% wool. It is washable, wears like iron, but is soft & squishy. Another thing you didn't mention was cost. One could save money by knitting their own beanies. A skein of wool is maybe $7 -$15 dollars, a set of 16" US circular needles is maybe $12. My fave beginner patterns are The Bankhead Hat and The Boyfriend Beanie.

i have had 2 beanies i actually liked, the first was a purple one my grandmother got for me during her trip back home to the UK, it was stolen from me, i can understand why it was very beautiful, i had a friend steal a beanie for me a few years back when i was a little delinquent, and kept it up until recently when i tried it on, and it looks the same as my old purple one did on me, i think that beanies are hats that are meant for you to just sort of find, and gel with, and then live with, you dont ever acquire a beanie, it acquires you

Harry, thank you SO much for this video! It’s finally cooling down where I live so I’m bringing out my beanies, and I‘ve been thinking this whole week that I need to look up the right way to wear a beanie and why I don’t feel right wearing certain ones. Kept forgetting/pushing it off until I opened up CZcams today and saw this. You’re awesome man, thank you so much 🙏🏼 love your videos!

You missed one very important thing: colour. A colour that doesn’t suit you doesn’t mean that beanie doesn’t suit you, a different colour can change the look of the hat on you. Try on every colour!

This was very interesting. My hair is quite fluffy and curly and it makes it hard to find a beanie that looks good because I think it looks awkward where it smooshes my hair down and poofs back out. Looser fitting ones are better but still not perfect :/

I'm the opposite. I almost exclusively wear tighter beanies with no cuff. I have a small head and I'm bald. So a beanie with a cuff, even a small one, looks weird on me. The tight no cuff ones accentuate my face perfectly.
The problem? Finding one that fits right or finding a store that even sells them. Most are too long or have that sag, or they are for runners and have bright colors. I'v been wearing the same express one for 6 years and it just fell apart.
Wish me luck guys. I need to find one now before my head freezes.

My whole life I just assumed I can’t wear beanies because they’ve all looked weird. Different hairstyles and all. Heads too round, foreheads too big, ears too high, idk. But I recently put on a beanie to prove that point and it actually looked ok. The only beanie in the world that works for me and i found it in my late twenties! Still probably never going to wear it though

Hairstyle and outfit Matters alot for me as well. When I have a streetstyle obersized outfit a longer beanie adds more height, since the baggy clothing makes me look smaller. For more clean tight clothing I add a more tight beanie.

The only beinnies I have are ones I’ve made myself. I’m not one for fashion so I really enjoy the lil slack back and pompom. It isn’t particularly cold most of tHe time where I am so it is more of a “winter”look for me

I have a somewhat similar hairstyle to you, except my combover is a little taller/longer, so I was shocked when you said “don’t slouch” as that’s the only way to keep a little of my combover in the look. I personally do NOT like the “nipple beanie” style with sag above the head, I’d take some slouch over hobo-core any day

I love beanies, their my go to hat. But once I started rocking my curls it was a challenge to fit the two together. Now that I have locs I find that beanies are a little tighter and i have to actually think about tightness, stretch, and slack. It's really made me think about how hard finding the right beanie can be lol. Currently I always stick with my Corpse beanie cuz it has the perfect amount of stretch and slack. As my hair gets longer and thicker all the others hats get looked at funny lol

Got literally 12 beanies and only wear 1. When you find the 1 you don't let go. But even then on some days you don't like how it fits..so you keep searching...every time I see the beanie at a store...I see the perfect thickness.and try it on. Always ends up failing me in the way it fits. The search continues...maybe a lifelong search for the 1...thank you for this video I never knew I needed. Beanie lovers and seekers...unite

Colour will also be very important, especially with anything you are putting close or around your face. The same hat can be absolutely the same but one in a different colour that doesn't suit your personal colouring will just look a bit off.

Not exactly beanie specific, but I really appreciated your point about online sellers needing to show their product on a person. It drives me crazy when purse sellers neglect to show their products on models! I've almost bought a purse until I saw the picture of it on a model. It was too big! Shoppers need those perspectives.

Another knitter here. The style that you like is a ribbed hat, more specifically a well-defined rib that looks like a twisted rib or even a brioche rib. The way the hat is machine or hand knit makes a huge difference too. Like in hand knit beanies, there are decreases in the crown of the hat that follow the head, better than lumpy seams, and definitely affects fit.
