Shaker Style Cupboard Using Only Hand Tools!

- I made this DIY shaker style country cupboard using only hand tools as a first project with my new work bench. I have been watching a lot of videos by Wood By Wright and The Hand Toolery (Links to their channels below) lately and was inspired to keep the woodworking machines turned off for this project. It has been a while since i did some traditional woodworking. The cupboard is made from the cheapest common white pine you can buy at the home center. I made the project using a lot of different types of joinery including mortise and tenons, sliding, through and half blind dovetails, ship lap and half lap joinery. It took me about 30 hours to complete and was a great project to pull out the hand saws, hand planes, chisels and more traditional woodworking tools. I had a great time making this project and I hope you enjoy the video. If you do, give me a thumbs up, leave a comment and subscribe to see more!

Really love that trick for cutting the sliding dovetail! Great work all around.
Woah!! Thanks. I am a big fan of your content.
I know others say it should've been in hardwood, but that pine is gonna age beautifully!
Pine is a fantastic traditional craft material. All my craft pieces are made from it and it took a good period of time for my customer base to understand its appeal and beauty as most have only an experience with cheap production furniture made out of pine.
Very nice presentation. Thank you for sharing.
Pine is a wonderful craft material and more craftsmen should be using it for making general purpose furniture. Not everything needs to be some fine furnishing masterpiece.
Some of my favorite build have been with pine or poplar. I think it looks great and it makes woodworking more enjoyable to not fight difficult woods all the time
Well done project and excellent videography and editing.
Woah thanks! I like you series on hand tools (hand planes are stupid) and a lot of your other videos. I wish I could talk in front of the camera like you and a few others in the community! I will keep practicing though
That's great tortorials keep it up 👍🤓
Nice work and great commentary
Thank you!
Great work! I'm inspired.
Nice looking cabinet.
Well presented and crafted. I'm positive you've advanced even further in your craft during the past 5 years. ("My, how time flies", indeed.)
Thanks! I didn’t realize it has been that long. I don’t get to focus on just hand tool work as much as I would have liked but have been spending more time with the machines off lately
Lovely, I like the cut of your jib sir.
Real great job! Wait for the same, but with oak!
Oak would look great!. Good luck with the build
Great job.
Beautiful piece.
Thanks!
Great video, I appreciate your techniques using hand tools. Waiting for more. Thanks
Thank you!
Well executed. Well produced!
Thank you!
Fantastic hand tool build!!
Thanks!
You did a good job. Your narration is good. A nice and authentic video. Thanks.
Thank you!
Very nice. When I needed a groove for a frame I made a grooving plane. I did it with laminated construction and used a chisel for the iron.
There's a book you might find filled with ideas on making more: MAKING WOOD TOOLS with John Wilson - Second Edition; Home Shop Books
Made this EXACT cupboard except no shelf in high school years ago. Crazy!
Great job and dialogue. Loved the sliding dovetail trick. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback. One day I will make a dovetail plane but the guideblock method works and it pretty fast
Beautiful work
Thank you!
Nice project! Thanks.
Thank you!
I want to start woodworking and this video prove that woodworking using hand tools is a true art.
Thank you!
Very nice. Thank you
It's comforting to see younger people using hand tools that most won't even look at...
Keep it simple bro, eh... Ü
Respect to those who work with hand tools. The description you are making while working is also really good. I just subscribed. Thank you for the master class.
Thank you!
Just perfect work!
Thanks!
Fantastic, that was almost the same how we learn it in College!!!!
I love this Dave :) Beautiful work my friend ॐ
Thank you
Very nice and logical approach. Good job!
Thanks!
Dude, this is phenomenal. I’m honored by the shoutout! Seriously though you explain things so well, and the shots are great. Not to mention, the result is perfect! Cheers!
Thanks! A few years ago, I went through a time where I only used hand tools. Now I go the hybrid woodworking route but you guys definitely inspired me to see if I still had the patience to build start to finish by hand still. I cant wat to see your sideboard finish up. That walnut looks amazing!
Nice project, well explained. Thanks!
Awesome work great video
Fantastic work.
Thanks!
Nice work sir please keep it up
Great work. What a beauty project
Great video. Nice that you actually covered all pieces.
Very nice job mate
I’m just so proud of all the young people on CZcams picking up the craftsmanship of and doing amazing work using traditional skills, whether it’s woodworking or smithing. Thank you for sharing this.
(BTW, you have a pleasing voice.)
Thank you. I learn so much more about woodworking when using traditional tools that help me even when I do use machinery
Twisted Woodshop You also must exercise the virtue of patience in both the work itself and in the wait for the reward, so it’s all good.
Keep up the good work!
respect, love it
I really enjoyed watching you use hand tools to make this cabinet.
Thank you
Nicely done! Thanks for sharing... 👍
Thank you!
Great hand tool project and fantastic result. Thank you
Awesome job!
Wow beautiful everything !!!!
Thank you
Wonderful project. Thanks for sharing it.
I didn`t intend to use this woodworking book, t.co/z6o0f8z2H4 but instead curious about it. I had been truly amazed after trying it. It never dissatisfied me in my desire to have more information about the art of wood working. I discovered several topics such as wood types as well as designing your workshop..
This is fantastic! I love your level of detail in your explanations and your technique is awesome. I'd love to see more projects like this.
Thanks. I didn't turn a power tool on for about a year and half a few years ago. Only hand tools. Now I use a good mix of both. I will do another hand tool only project soon though. This one was a lot of fun.
Wow! Masterful! Thank you so much for sharing this project with us.
Gorgeous :))
Thanks!
Skill!!!
Extraordinary work! We're only human so probably that's why the dovetail is overcut at 15:01
Thanks!? I'm not usually to picky about the back of a drawer but I've been known to over cut them on visible dovetails too. Thanks for watching!
@@TwistedWorkshop77 Yes, it is a compliment to your work and only that! It just feels human for us beginners to see that (much) more advanced people make mistakes too not only us :-D
Some CZcamsrs hide all the mistakes and leave the impression that it went flawless from start to finish (which probably is not the case)
Excellent
G’day Dave, mate that’s very impressive & such a nice video to watch, it seems working with hand tools can be both therapeutic & so interesting & the end result of this build is a keeper, cheers 🍻👍
Thanks! It means a lot coming from you knowing all of the great videos and projects you create! I really enjoy this community.
what a skill to do every thing from hand
I really like how you used pine. So many CZcams wood workers use super expensive lumber that is inaccessible for me where I live, unless I drive 2 hours one way and then I can’t afford it
Thanks! Good hard wood is hard to come by around here too and if you can find some, its pricey!
Twisted Woodshop I have a lot of 125 yo barn lumber, mostly oak some popular it’s hard to kill to size with my tools but I am getting more and can’t wait To use it more and more easily.
We need more videos like this :o
I dig it.
When something you wanna just "try" turns out so good, don't you wish you would've used some hard wood? 😊
Yes!! I told my wife 5 different times "I should have used cherry"! Its funny you said that
@@TwistedWorkshop77 Well, this is Shaker inspired, right? Didn’t they use a LOT of pine in their furniture? Looks great man, really. Very much enjoyed watching this as well. Told my wife “this is where I want to be in a year.” I am getting there!
in my humble opinion, one of the best videos on the web!. Please do more builds.
Kim Allen, Thank you very much! I will keep at it!
Loved it. Great video production skills too!
I can see a few more hand tools I NEED!!!
Thanks! It seems like I always need 1 or 2 more hand tools also!
great, great work. Congratulations!! Greetings from Chile
Nice!
I’ve been wanting to get into hand woodworking and you project was a great inspiration! I like you method of showing each step. We’ll done!
Steve
Great work. Came out really well
Beautiful
Thank you
Nice build. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Lovely cupboard and a great video, thankyou for sharing.
Thank you
I love hand tool vids. Great workmanship and an enjoyable watch.
Thanks!
'Excellent job. Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it
Nice build man
Thanks! That one was a lot of fun
A tidy job. Well done.
Thank you!
I hope all the encouragement from everyone keeps your inspired. These are great videos! Keep up the good work and i look forward to additional content.
Definitely inspired. This is a great community of people. Woodworking has always been solitary for me. It is awesome to have people to share it with and learn from!!
This is a brilliant piece, and a great example of using the right tool for the job. Great effort!
Thank you!
Great build and a lovely piece! Our European pine is more like yellow...and all finishes that I know of make it more yellow. Once again Good job!
Great job! Very educational video. Helped me quite a bit. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed this. Such a well made video - pace, edits, lighting and I learned a lot. Thanks!
Thanks!
Another brilliantly explained video, you give everything a really logical flow that makes sense to the newbie. I was very impressed how you did the long dovetails. I really like Wood by Wright, a really nice guy and I envy his skills as I do yours.
Thank you. There are some really good makers to pull inspiration from. It was a couple years since doing an all hand tool project. Watching wood by wright and hand toolery got me excited to make something. They make it look so effortless, I forgot how labor intensive it was. Thanks for watching
I liked your technique for making the sliding dovetails. Nice job.
Thanks.
Mate, you have the patience of a saint. Love how this turned out. Keep up the great work.
Built By Chris thanks!
Great job, impeccable. Very entertaining the video. Congratulations for your skill.
Thank you
Man that's beautiful! Glad to see the classics being used!
Thanks. Some of them were collecting dust for a while. It was a lot of fun though. I think I will make more all hand tool pieces in the future
Start a playlist...that could be a big boost to your channel. I really like that rabbiting plane...that's sweet. So many good ideas in this including the beveled board/dovetail trick. Nice!
Really stellar work here. You show great skill and technique in all of your videos that I've seen so far. I've been building furniture for over 30 yrs now and I didn't see anything that I'd do differently except the dovetails. Just for giggles cut a set using the pins first method. It doesn't work with 1/2 blind obviously but for any other application hen you see how much easier the lay-out and execution is, you'll never go back. Thanks for all the great work here.
Nice shop!
Such a good build mate. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to checking out your other videos later today when I get the time 👌 cheers
Thanks for watching
very useful, thank you ... success for you
Thanks!
Good work!
Thanks!
That is absolutely gorgeous. I couldn't make that fit and finish with power tools.
Thank you!
I like your slope for dovetails. With your skill I would lay in a stock of nice timbers if you have space under the bed!
However pine looks lovely.
Beautiful job on the cabinet and the video!
Thank you! The cabinet was the easiest of the two
Great video. I really enjoyed watching, thank you
Thanks!
Great job and nice project. I need to step up my hand tool game with a few more planes. Thank you for the video.
Thanks! It's a lot of fun and a good work out!
Wonderfull, it’s like,,,,, I work in my shop all day making stuff then I come home and watch you work all day making stuff. It’s really enjoyable to watch you work. Thank you for sharing 👍📐🔨😄
One day I'm going to make some new saw horses. I like your with the storage in the bottom!
Twisted Woodshop 😄 👍
Twisted Woodshop it’s also my most liked video 😄
Nice work! Hand-tool projects definitely make the project more special. I just finished my workbench using only hand tools and no doubt it means more to me than if I used power tools!
Thanks I agree. It's a little nicer when you build with hand tools! I watched your last bench video. It turned out great. I will be going back to watch the rest.
Twisted Boards thanks for checking it out!
That was a great project. I really enjoy your videos. Your woodworking is great, but I also enjoy your video and narration style. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Cool!!!
This came out pretty great! Lots of good tips
Thanks!
Two thumbs up for this video. I liked the pace, the music, the camera angles and the explanation. Can't wait till I see your next hand tool woodworking video :)
Thanks!
Great video. Very instructive and showcased a lot of different techniques. Really top shelf production quality. You should be very proud.
Thank you!
Really great work!
Thanks Guy!
Nice
Fantastic video!! A pleasure to watch!!
Best wishes David
