The German New Year's Eve Tradition (or Dinner for Two)

- The reason why 'Dinner for One' is so important is because the last day of the year is the only day that Germans are allowed to laugh. Thank you so much for all the support this year, you guys are incredible. More stuff coming in 2022. Happy New Year to you all!

I don't think a single German could tell you why this sketch is a tradition, but we all agree it's a good one
It was aired as a spontaneous replacement for some show that was canceled on a short note. The people in the audience are mostly the wives, husbands and friends of the people working on set, because they had to shoot very quickly and couldn't find an audience quick enough. And since slapstick humor doesn't need language, it became a hit immediately and was requested every year thereafter.
they air it in sweden to XD
@@myeramimclerie7869 don't do that
Yep as a German I agree
Genau haha
Haha, this sketch runs on Swedish TV as well every new year's eve at 9 pm. You are not alone with this tradition, Germany 😅
jag älskar och saknar Sverige 🖤 bästa hälsningar från Tyskland!
Only at nine? It runs every fifteen minutes somewhere over here between five and nine 😉
Det visste jag inte! Vi verkar gilla gammal tv på engelska i december…
Switzerland too!!
I have watched that sketch every year on New Year’s Eve, though last year it was at 19.45
We watched that skit in German class every year through middle school and high school!!! Good times hahahaha- SKAL! *clicks heels and almost falls over
"Schkål!", to be more precise. It's still gibberish, though, as "skål!" (with a clear /s/ sound) is the Scandinavian salutation when raising a toast. German speakers would say "Prost!" or "zum Wohl!". 🍷🥃🥂
@@danielvanr.8681 I know lol, you should watch the reference movie/ skit they're talking about called "Dinner for Two", it's an old comedy, will make more sense what the reference is.
I love how this sketch is basically a replay of dinner for one
Yeah. Lovingly-made, too.
Yeah the moment he got up and bumped into the furniture i was screaming "son of a bitch you are doing the sketch"
Wait, what happened after the camera turned off? 🧐
@@benjaminoechsli1941the same procedure as last year!
Even the title with the brackets
Last New year's Eve, I showed my British boyfriend "dinner for one". And he was totally confused how us Germans could possess such humour 😀
(Needless to say, he had never heard of that sketch before)
Tell him that we only watch it at the 31st of December because it's the only day of the year we are legally allowed to have fun and that was the best thing we could come up with, so we continue to watch the same old black and white TV show every year!
@@FriedrichHerschel he will totally believe that.
@@FriedrichHerschel Yeah, just tell him we keep all our laughs until the last day of the year and therefore we just laugh at basically anything.
I’d never heard of Dinner For One until this year. A German friend was surprised that I’d never seen it, since it’s British!
Watching that sketch every New Year’s Eve is also a tradition here in Denmark. One I very much enjoy.
The sketch is even rerun every year on our main television channel, DR1, timed so that it ends a few minutes before midnight.
Same here in Austria
Cool. I had no idea. Here in Germany different channels show it at different times throughout New Year's Eve so everyone can watch it at the time which suits them best or mutliple times if they want.
Same in Sweden!
And in Finland as well!
It has been a tradition in ages in Denmark, the one year (in the 80'ies I think) they skipped the sketch, there was a veritable storm of complaints - they haven't dared to even think about skipping it again
I was once spending new years eve in France, but with group of German friends. I was confused as hell when they told about this tradition, but of course we sat and watch the whole thing. They even had a game to drink a shot everytime James was tripping on a carpet haha. Great video! Good memories
Usually it’s when the Butler drinks but hey, double the shots!
@@schumerus6786 you drink every time james drinks? Do you have a death wish?
@@schumerus6786 "Prepare for trouble"

As a half-german living in britain this is about the first acknowledgement I've seen of it outside of germany itself!
@MAVONA$💋 Get a life
We watch it in Denmark as well!
@@eZU4nQsWN9pAGsU38aHj Oh nice!
We certainly watch it in Scandinavia
I think QI mentioned it.
I did not yet realise that germans and dane share this tradition.... Like why??? But "that damn cat" is the best thing ever and worth a yearly tradition in and of itself
A lot if Europe shares this tradition
Maybe because we share Geographic borders and culture with each other?
Our languages are based on the same origin? And before Christianity we even believed in the same mythology?
If they don't speak you can literally not distinguish a Northern German from a Danish person (Jutland), because they are eerily similar in the way they behave.
It's just that we swallow the potatoes before start to speak. Just kidding (not really tho).
I love you people up north :)
I’m from Sweden and I had no idea people watched it outside of Sweden! It’s tradition here as well but here it’s called “grevinnan och betjänten” which means “the duchess and the servant”
Do you watch it in a Swedish translated version?
@@epajarjestys9981 Nope. There are subtitles, sure, but nothing more than that.
We do it in Norway too where it's called "grevinnen og hovmesteren" which means basically the same.
No almost everthing english are only whit subtitles @@epajarjestys9981
And they watch Donald Duck on Christmas Eve?
In Norway this sketch is called the countess and the butler and its watched the day before christmas for some reason, and it keeps getting funnier and funnier. The moment he misses the polar bear head and looks down in wonder, kills me every time
Polar bear? There is no polar bear. At least not in the version we germans watch every year. He stumbles over a tigers head
it's a tigers head
He’s right, as a Brit I had no idea that existed.
watch it! es ist sehr gut
Your comment got copied by a bot :(
I spent my first New Year in Germany in the hospital and we all gathered in the common room to watch it together and eat cake. It's one of my favorite memories of New Year.
Hope you are doing fine?
@@Weirdkauz nope, dying... but thankfully not after I got to have a few more Silvesters!!
As a brit i completely agree that most of us dont know it exists

Danes watch this one too. Every new years eve right before the countdown. And the younger generations make a drinking game out of it. Good times.
People in Greenland and Denmark also watches Dinner for one every new years eve. :D
True
I am glad we are not the only ones with that tradition!
why?
@@yourmum69_420 tradition
The sketch is a huge hit in Norway and Sweden as well. I keep mixing up which country watches on which of the days, because I watch on both, but it has a fixed spot every Christmas Eve and/or New Years Eve. Same procedure as every year.
We have the same tradition in Sweden! We also watch Dinner for one on New Year’s Eve.
I’m British and lived in Germany and have literally NEVER heard of this film. Though I’m going to have to watch it now. With Kettle Crisps. I hope you got some sponsorship for that! 😂
How?! It's on almost every TV channel at some point during new year's eve.
What? You missed an integral part of our culture ;)
Jedes Jahr läuft der Film zu Silvester...
same here. Spent NYE in germany, but never heard of this
This is my German partners tradition and we do it every year now and I have to say I quite enjoy it, it’s a fun sketch! It’s a shame it’s forgotten in Britain
It was produced in Hamburg and it's in English because James didn't like the German so much back then and instisted n speaking English...
I can't believe I've forgotten our most honorable German tradition this year! 😳
Does it still count to watch it on New Years Day? Or do I have to repeat the horrible 2021 now?
Happy new year 2021!
You shall be punished with a Peitsche like my Großvater did it
It is also possible on New Year’s Day!
No it doesnt. You will have to inform you nearest German Office about this horrible transgression and be prepared to be reeducated o nwhat it is to be a German.
Next thing youtell me you feel nothing when hearing the word "oranje" ....
@@kaitan4160 the German office? Oh! You mean the Bundesamt zur Auffrischung kultureller Angelegenheiten (BAkA), gotcha!
As a German let me say: "Dinner for one gehört einfach zu Silvester dazu" - Thank you for your attention

As a South African, I grew up with this tradition (British stepfather showed me the sketch and explained) and I loved it and watched every year. No one I ever met knew about it, I’m surprised it isn’t more well known in The U.K.
You have to know the film to appreciate the depth of this sketch!
it's not only in germany but also in switzerland that dinne for one is traditionally watched together on new year's eve just like three nuts for cinderella at christmas🙃😊
It just hit me today, most people want to start their year off with a good start, but party hard on new years eve, so they wake up on Jan 1st with a hangover and have a horrible start to their year, doesn't that seem like backwards logic?
No no. You want to start the new year off as worst as you can so you give yourself the best chances to improve
To receive something, you must give something. So thorough the suffering on Eve, we receive a good boost for the coming year.

As a swede but half-German, I always used to watch the sketch growing up. I never understood why, but it is a good sketch
I think its because it has an almost perfect blend of slapstick humor, running gags, and visual storytelling.
Its dangerously close to being the platonic ideal of a sketch.
The best thing about this video is that he always bumps into the table when he get up to get the other one something (as if he was his Butler lol). And in dinner for one the butler trips over the head of a tiger that’s part of tigers pelt lying on the floor. So subtile but perfect XD
Hahaha, I’ve watched that since as long as i can remember, Happy New Year from Denmark!
In Denmark we also watch it every new year's evening.
It’s sent on television every year in Norway thankfully, same procedure every year!
Quite popular here 😉
So accurate, i LOVE Dinner for one
Happy New Year everyone :))
I actually showed this to a former boss and colleagues in London (I'm german) and they still don't believe it's a British sketch. Apparently "same procedure as last year" is a VERY stereotypical german turn of phrase LOL
Damn that’s sketch is a tradition to watch where I live to
Gesundes Neues euch beiden. Bleibt schön gesund und macht weiter so
I like be how they included the "stumble gag" in this sketch - i relly appreciate this homage to the Dinner for One. Pretty meta 👏
This is the best sketch you’ve ever done 😂😂😂 we watch Dinner For One every year and you’ve completely nailed this video 😆
Funny things, in Russia we have same tradition!
On the new year, all people watch same move its called "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!" And I mean ALL COUNTRY!
It's on CZcams with English subtitles!
We don't even have to live in Russia any more to observe this tradition! No matter where we live, all Russians watch this film on New Year's :)
We germans don't laugh a lot as we all know but THIS SKETCH cracks us up each time!
Does multiple times daily count as not a lot? 😥
Oh I remember this our German descended family made us watch this every year!
There are a few other TV shows that have tradition on Germany (some may know ekel Alfred) but dinner for one is probably the most prolific one. As is stuffing yourself with Raclette and bombing mailboxes apart in certain small towns. You know, the fun stuff. I was pretty happy actually this year was a little "quieter" as an introvert, I kinda rely on alcohol to survive new years otherwise I think...
Good old "Ein Herz und eine Seele - Der Silvesterpunsch"
Also "The last unicorn" at Christmas for some odd reason
Love you guys 😘 happy 2022 🤗🤗🤗 sending tons of love and support all the way from Malaysia ❤️
It's a Danish tradition as well. It's the last thing played on DR1 (public tv channel) before the countdown at midnight each year :D
Funny, in sweden we watch it to like a tradition. Happy new year and thanks for all the laughing your bringing
It is a very serious tradition in Denmark watching Dinner for One on New Year's Eve just before midnight
I watched it this year and laughed and enjoyed it. Never would have known it if not for my lovely German step-family I spent Christmas with.
It's also a tradition in Denmark and a good chunk of Scandinavia, the actual reason is it was cheap to send and it was vaguely related to the new year.
Seriously, it was record by one of the German public service station, NDR, so it's really cheap to license and once something happens twice in a row, it becomes a tradition.
I've seen every single year since 1986 and I laugh every single time.
I have seen this show many times too! Happy new year from Finland!
We watch this skit every year in Sweden too, watched it last night.
This sketch is a classic in Sweden to. We also have Ivanhoe as a tradition hangover movie with kebabpizza (döner) for new years day.
In Norway that movie is shown every year on NRK (the national broadcasting) on the 23rd of December. It's more of a New Years thing, but the bottom line is we watch it every year as well for some reason
I love this so much Thank You!!
We also watch it here in Denmark, love what you did with this sketch!
Oh yes, my German hubby adores this. He introduced me to it. What a riot!
That’s a great adaptation of yours.😂👍
Happy new year! 🎉🎆
As always we have watched dinner for one this night
It is a delight each year
Quite delightful an a good laugh
It's also become a staple of New Years Eve viewing in Australia!
Oh man! I've watched this sketch every new years eve since I can remember and never did I think about what they implied at the end...
I actually found out about this sketch on my year abroad in the US cause the guy staying in my same family was German! The sketch is very funny still to this day!
Happy new year!! 💕💕
YES! Thank you! This was me yesterday! My wife didn’t know about it before 😂😂😂😂
I love/hate that I had to go watch “Dinner for One” to get the brilliance of this skit.😂
Same in Switzerland, I remember to watch it with my whole family every new years eve when I was a kid
We watch this every year here in Norway!
We haven't watched it for the last 2 years we're probably gonna get arrested by the German national duty police or sth
Same thing in Denmark. No joke, literally every year watch this very short-film. And it's always hilarious, so it's a good way to end the year.
Love that sketch.. see it every 23. December. Tradition in Norway 👍👍👍🤣🤣
This Channel makes me happy 😍
"The same procedure as every year, James!" 😅 Ein frohes neues Jahr euch allen!🍀
Guten Rutsch und fröhliches neues Jahr🍾🎉
love your guys spin on this
We watched this sketch so religiously, that when I missed it one year, I actually felt bad about it and thought it brought bad luck for the next year.
My mind was blown though when I talked to Brits about it and they had no clue what it was..
Every year I watch "world's strongest man" with my dad. It is a very intellectual show. We're waiting all year to see it and this show has become a ritual in our family, it always makes us feel smarter
PS : I m french
I see what you did there with the table when standing up 😏 but yeah Tradition indeed
Happy New Year! And thank you! Found it and added it to an Indian tradition now 🤪
We shall watch this every new years eve
The sketch is a part of Swedish new years celebration too, and I think they watch it in Norway and Denmark also!
Happy new year from Denmark, Skål! (Yes we watch it as well.)

Happy New Year to everyone 🎆! Who else tried to drink away 2021 and wasn't sucessful but still was or is on the verge of not ending up like our friend here?
I didn't knew this sketch was a new year's eve thing outside of Sweden too!! That's cool
I legitimately just watched this with my grandparents when I was visiting.
I did not know that so many other countries actually had this tradition as well.
We watch it, just before turns to 00:00, here in Denmark.
We have seen that sketch on Australian television from time to time. Grüße aus Australien.
We have had the same tradition here in Finland too for quite a few years now.

True we watch it ever year on new years eve you can watch it basically from 8pm till midnight through because its running somewhere all the time
The stumbling every time, the constant shots, the increasingly drunkenness of the man fetching the drinks and snacks... Mwah, chef's kiss!
And today I learnt that Germans and Swedes know more about that sketch than Brits. Peculiar. Makes me wonder how many Americans know about the Disney Christmas special that pretty much every Swede watches on Christmas Eve.
In Austria it is on TV also every year before the sound of the Pummerin at midnight and the Donauwalzer introduce the new year. I think many Austrians enjoy this sketch as well.
A friend hosted once a dinner where he cooked all the things Miss Sophie has for dinner in this Sketch.
I'm Tasmanian and I also watched this every New Year's Eve as a child :)
