Superb modification i have ever seen wltoys 12428.. i also like to modified such a cheap rc car(but it isn't cheap for me ) i watched almost all videos of wltoys 12428 on youtube. This is the best one.. I think fpv antenna should insert inside because it is easily to damage and vtx as well due to antenna .. keep it up
What an amazing video and build. Many of us have been at this buggy for years and it took a TON of trial and error to get to where you did in a week!! Thank you very much for listing your parts as most can't be bothered. The FlySky GT3C comes with a rechargeable lipo that greatly reduces the weight. The wheel extenders, besides giving a greater stance also gives you more room for the rod ends to clear the inside of the wheel. I've tried using the body magnet kits to hold the back of my buggy's body down, but a better solution is to just pass a steel rod through the square body mounting peg holes. It's quick and cheap. Bend a hook at one end to make it easier to insert and remove. I stayed with the stock brushed motor, but beware of cheap knock off HobbyWing ESC's out there. They are advertised as being the real thing, but they fail in no time! ALL that you've done is amazing and I think we can all grab a few ideas to try. One mod that you didn't address is improving the actual steering. The bigger servo will push its way through a lot of resistance, but the steering itself needs to be modded. Some of us have used the bell crank out of a Rustler. Thanks.

Oh yeah, one more thing....there is a anti sway bar kit available too. It helps with chassis twist under acceleration. I think Horizon has that in stock still. And a 2 speed tranny option that was available in the twin hammers you can still get too.

Fantastic rig! Very nice! If by chance you're still looking to upgrade or modify it take a look at upgrade parts for the Vaterra twin hammers. It's the same thing. You can get front and rear diff lockers from several different places, horizon, amain, and a few others. Vanquish had a full rear axle, may still list it. GCM Racing in Canada has a front conversion kit that puts upright shocks on, it replaces the front lower chassis section with aluminum and hinges the front like you did. The purpose aside from added strength is it completely opens the front space for battery or electronics and in the end balances it with a forward weight bias (if you move the battery) for improved climbing. GPM has a mess of stuff too. There are steering knuckles, C hubs, drive shafts, rear links,(Axial Wraith links from Vanquish may also work). Those are great rigs bone stock. Yours is already amazing and needs nothing. Just thought I'd let you know in case you're still looking for something. Thanks for all the great FPV info! 👍

FWIW, the FlySky GT3C comes with a rechargeable lipo. That lipo weighs 1/2 of what the AA's do and especially less than the big add-on lipo. Both work, just extra info.

Oh 2.4ghz amplifier booster. Smart thinking. I had a amp for 2.4ghz in a box somewhere. 1w or 2w don't remember. Forgot I used it for betafpv lite radio that had horrible range. But I was thinking elrs900 or crossfire and mount antenna high. And over 1w vtx I have with high antenna.
@@RCinginSC yea but my crossfire is already 1w.. and 5.8ghz vtx give out way before 900mhz.. just pain to use crossfire and set it up to use steering wheel transmitter. Need extra receivers and what not. I'll prob just use my drone transmitter
Gd , new to the scene but have fenyui fy07 brushless version. Almost fully same car all the way around , just a bit more updated with some metal gears, diffs. But my God you are the insane modder!! Love your open hood as its what i came with myself on accident lol . But i have been trying to come Up with the battery tray mod. And your idea is perfect. I already took off tire because it throws car off axis as is. Sorta wonder what you may be doing with all that range though!? Lol i could never see close to as far as your range will go with that setup . Lol one beast build though! You are def. one if not the top RC modder , builder i have ye to have seen on youtube yet and i have watched a lot of videos and seen nobody have this type of full all around knowledge .

I run fpv on my senton blx and brushless tmaxx, but never thought about a servo to turn with steering, that's awesome! I wreck up alot going waay fast tho so I'd have to cut out the "window" of body and mount camera inside body or fpv would get wiped out
Yes, and that's what happened to me as well. In later vids you'll see that I have direct mounted the camera to the windshield section of the rollcage. It's far better protected. Feel free to check out my Playlist on the car for a ton more mods and upgrades that will apply to most any rc car. @@RCinginSC nice , I don't have enuff extra quad parts to start throwing them on my rc yet but only thing I'd like to have is camera on a automated gimbal, atleast for up and down, my cars r hard to keep nose down ( waaaay over powered) and when all the power sets down the nose comes up nd u see nothing but sky ! I actually use my fatshark recons when I drive. My senton (not stock electronics , and on 4s) almost tries to fly when all the punch hits at about 55-60mph nd u can't really see it happening with goggles on cause it happens so fast! Awesome work tho man! I'll b checking all ur videos out, have one or two of fpv cars on my channel and LOTS of my other addictions.
Great video I just recently started working on my little wltoys , full aluminum upgrades including metal chassis , sway bars front and rear. I currently have 3 fpv rc cars 2 Losi E8ights TLRS on electric one nitro covered to electric. I think i will fpv My wltoys 12428 . Awesome video👍

Thank you for the kind words . As far as the wheel extenders , funny you ask. They work and install no problem ... But...when you tighten the wheel down tight it slightly presses against the hub creating some drag. Easy fix though. I simply shaved off about .25 mm off the end that sits over the hub pin. Problem solved and the wheels spin free as a bird. The only other thing you will need to do is simply drill out the center of the wheel to 5mm so the extender screw can go thru the wheel. Easy enough since the wheel is only thin plastic. Takes about 5secs to do.

Like the power you put in it. So your not concern if it flips over it will ruin that antenna? I need to put on the metal rear axle... plastic more than likely broke because I lost power in rear wheels... newbie to hobby, nice little buggy, but after playing with my later bought Armma Senton 6S I no longer play with buggy. I think if WLTOYS made one as powerful as yours wheel extended and all, metal parts, more power it would be truly an awesome product. The plastic interior parts one currently on the market, just has so much potential, but fails too soon a few months later after purchase.
awesome upgrades, looks great! I bought one of the for Christmas for my daughter. She ran about 5 or 6 batteries through it and stripped the rear drive shaft. This seems like a common problem with the power of the stock motor. What rear drive shaft do you use as I am looking to replace with one a little better? a lot of the reviews on the ones available say they don't tend to last very long.

Sorry I missed your comment. I'm sure you worked it out by now but you simply unscrew the screws thru the bottom of the chassis and pull the motor out. You may have to also remove the dust cover over the gears if it won't pull out easily.
Excellent build and with style! I placed my order for one of these along with a set of oil shocks just yesterday. Any suggestions on maybe the top 3 upgrades aside from the fpv system? I have a limited budget but I did manage to snag up the truck for $60. I live in Charleston and come from mostly a flying background.
If you're on a limited budget, then I'd would def do a link kit. The factory links are plastic and non adjustable. You already have shocks coming, and I'd prob put some wheel extenders and fatter wheels on. The stock motor and radio works pretty good so I wouldn't worry about that right now. most impressed with the controller mods, using even rechargeable aa's is just a pain in the arse so the battery mod is nice, that 4w booster is a nice addition to, how far do you get with that on open ground?
I am still searching for a place to really stretch it out. Unfortunately , in SC , there isn't a straight level road in the entire state. 300 meters is no problem so I imagine if I can find the right place , 1km is doable. Thanks for watching. 🤘😁👍

I’m still dreaming of getting arc car I wish it was all highly modified for me because I have learnt really well from other youtuber and the only thing I knew was to get a metal drive shaft ball thingy I’m still new as hell I don’t know anything
I just checked , and some of the suspension parts I ordered from Amazon have been discontinued. But Banggood sells tons of parts for this buggie. They also off a full upgrade kit with all aluminum suspension parts. The main item I recommend is adjustable tierods. The wheels and hub extenders are linked in the description of this video as well. RCing in SC cool thanks. We had an l969 and obliterated the front end within five minutes of the first use. Don’t want to do that again. Will probably copy your body and battery setup. Nice electronics work.

I have a goolrc 3660 and it has a 5mm pinion and I bought the pinions for it and they're to big for the stock spur because they are M1. is there a replacement spur that is M1 for this truck?

The gear I used is linked in a comment in this video.. czcams.com/video/ArikKe7JKzs/video.html The stock pinion gear module is actually a 32p 17T gear but I found a 0.8M 17T pinion gear for 5mm shaft motor that works just fine. The pitch is nearly identical. The 32P is standard and the 0.8M is metric . If I remember correctly, I touched on that in the video linked above do I hope that helps. As I've mentioned in several comments, even though these are metal diffs, they are still limited in performance. Wheelies , doughnuts and burnouts are done with some risk of diff failure. I hope you get it back going soon. Take care. 😎👍
Most every part is available on Amazon without a parts list and most upgrade parts are available as well. If Amazon doesn't have it, then you could search Banggood.
very bad placing for camera and antenna. My sugestion is to put camera and antena inside the cockpit to avoid damage from crashs and rollovers. Also, servo on fpv camera mixed with steer cant be a good thing, because of sense of position. It is better to put camera control on a separated channel.

@@secretagb no I did not. No one ever asked and even though I wanted to, it's so item specific, that it would not apply to 99.9% of the people. It's very specific to my particular radio, and that particular booster and the chances of someone having both to do this mod would be slim to none....and slim left town. If it's something that could help you then perhaps I could try to help you somehow.
If you mean the blue metallic paint , then it was a can I've had a while that I picked up at an auto parts store a while back. The frame is simply sprayed with flat black . Sorry I don't have a better answer. Definitely need to prime first or else it will chip off very easily. Thx for watching. 😎👍
I had a question about the signal booster being wired into your transmitter. Does it also help the fly sky reciever range? I ask because it's a wifi booster and I'm clueless like that lol. Also, it's designed to be powered through a wall plug and 120v. How are you powering it? Thanks for the info!
The booster is powered off the 3s lipo that I power the radio from . The wall plug that came with it is a 12vdc power supply so any 12vdc power input will work, and in this case it's my 3s lipo. The booster by itself is what's extening the range. The Flysky RX is already a great RX and does a great job of staying locked in to that boosted signal. If you have a Flysky radio, I can do a quick vid on how to mod it with the booster. But every radio will be different so if you have a different radio , your mod may be different.
Also I made a "Wind Surfer" parabolic signal extender that slides over the radio antenna that will also greatly improved range. I have a vid on that but search "wind surfer signal booster" and you will find free online plans to make your own. It literally only takes about 5mins to make.
@@RCinginSC I have Spectrum radios. But to be honest, they are getting a bit old and have been looking at updating and flysky seems to be a great value for the reliability and features from what I've read.
Hey brother I have a question hopefully u can narrow it down for me I put a austar ax5s reciever a 25g servo and a goolrc 4500kv with a 35amp esc running 2s lipo. My problem is as I drive i will just be cruising and it acts like my brake is engaging sometimes when I stop it jumps I'm pretty certain it's not mechanical. I'm brand new to the hobby so I'm learning as I go. Any info u can provide would help i would appreciate it . Also the servo bar I have on it is stock and I noticed it's flexing any suggestions with that
I'll try my best. As far as the braking/jumping issue...most ESC's have a crude calibration function built in. It sounds like the ESC is slightly out of calibration. Try this. As soon as you plug in the lipo,( with the radio on) squeeze the trigger fully in the forward direction and hold for one second , then push the trigger away fully in the reverse direction for one second. Then release it to the neutral position. While you are doing this you should here some beeps or tones from your ESC. Be sure to center your throttle trim before doing this. I have several goolrc ESC's and this usually takes care of it. Before doing the Calibration, try just centering the throttle trim , plug in the lipo and see how it feels. You may simply have too much brake trim set and centering the trim and adjusting from there may take care of it. If that doesn't help, then do the calibration. As far as the servo horn deflecting and bending, they do sell metal servo horns online. Just be sure to maintain the same distance (roughly) from the servo horn screw to where the steering linkage attached so the proper turning ratio is maintained. Hope that helps. If you have other questions , feel free to ask.
Sir I have a question. My wltoy 12428 is in stock mode, can i change the battery to a 2200mah 25c 7.4v? Is this battery plug&play or do i have to upgrade something else? I just wanted stock, just batteries. Can i also plug 3200mah? Etc.... Thanks for the answer..
As long as the voltage is the same (2s), and it will fit in the battery tray, the capacity doesn't matter. So, yes, you can run as big of a battery as you want as long as it's 2s
To be clear, the camera is powered off battery voltage (3S) and the OSD displays that. The DVR is powered from a 5v buck converter. The regulator I'm using is this www.amazon.com/MP1584EN-DC-DC-Converter-Adjustable-Module/dp/B01MQGMOKI You need to dial it in for your exact voltage requirement. There is a small pot on it to dial it right in while checking the output voltage with a voltmeter.

Oh yeah, one more thing....there is a anti sway bar kit available too. It helps with chassis twist under acceleration. I think Horizon has that in stock still. And a 2 speed tranny option that was available in the twin hammers you can still get too.

Fantastic rig! Very nice! If by chance you're still looking to upgrade or modify it take a look at upgrade parts for the Vaterra twin hammers. It's the same thing. You can get front and rear diff lockers from several different places, horizon, amain, and a few others. Vanquish had a full rear axle, may still list it. GCM Racing in Canada has a front conversion kit that puts upright shocks on, it replaces the front lower chassis section with aluminum and hinges the front like you did. The purpose aside from added strength is it completely opens the front space for battery or electronics and in the end balances it with a forward weight bias (if you move the battery) for improved climbing. GPM has a mess of stuff too. There are steering knuckles, C hubs, drive shafts, rear links,(Axial Wraith links from Vanquish may also work).
Those are great rigs bone stock. Yours is already amazing and needs nothing. Just thought I'd let you know in case you're still looking for something. Thanks for all the great FPV info! 👍

FWIW, the FlySky GT3C comes with a rechargeable lipo. That lipo weighs 1/2 of what the AA's do and especially less than the big add-on lipo. Both work, just extra info.

Oh 2.4ghz amplifier booster. Smart thinking. I had a amp for 2.4ghz in a box somewhere. 1w or 2w don't remember. Forgot I used it for betafpv lite radio that had horrible range.
But I was thinking elrs900 or crossfire and mount antenna high. And over 1w vtx I have with high antenna.
Just remember, crossfire is 900mhz. You would not be about to use a 2.4ghz booster with crossfire.
@@RCinginSC yea but my crossfire is already 1w.. and 5.8ghz vtx give out way before 900mhz.. just pain to use crossfire and set it up to use steering wheel transmitter. Need extra receivers and what not. I'll prob just use my drone transmitter

I run fpv on my senton blx and brushless tmaxx, but never thought about a servo to turn with steering, that's awesome! I wreck up alot going waay fast tho so I'd have to cut out the "window" of body and mount camera inside body or fpv would get wiped out
Yes, and that's what happened to me as well. In later vids you'll see that I have direct mounted the camera to the windshield section of the rollcage. It's far better protected. Feel free to check out my Playlist on the car for a ton more mods and upgrades that will apply to most any rc car.
Like crossfire installation and setup and even running GPS using a flight controller for the interface. Etc.

@@RCinginSC nice , I don't have enuff extra quad parts to start throwing them on my rc yet but only thing I'd like to have is camera on a automated gimbal, atleast for up and down, my cars r hard to keep nose down ( waaaay over powered) and when all the power sets down the nose comes up nd u see nothing but sky ! I actually use my fatshark recons when I drive. My senton (not stock electronics , and on 4s) almost tries to fly when all the punch hits at about 55-60mph nd u can't really see it happening with goggles on cause it happens so fast! Awesome work tho man! I'll b checking all ur videos out, have one or two of fpv cars on my channel and LOTS of my other addictions.

Very nice build and fpv setup! Did you had any problems with installing the wheel extenders? Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the kind words . As far as the wheel extenders , funny you ask. They work and install no problem ... But...when you tighten the wheel down tight it slightly presses against the hub creating some drag. Easy fix though. I simply shaved off about .25 mm off the end that sits over the hub pin. Problem solved and the wheels spin free as a bird. The only other thing you will need to do is simply drill out the center of the wheel to 5mm so the extender screw can go thru the wheel. Easy enough since the wheel is only thin plastic. Takes about 5secs to do.

Only thing fragile is the bottom case holding motor and servo which is plastic, very easy to get tear open on impact

I need to put on the metal rear axle... plastic more than likely broke because I lost power in rear wheels... newbie to hobby, nice little buggy, but after playing with my later bought Armma Senton 6S I no longer play with buggy. I think if WLTOYS made one as powerful as yours wheel extended and all, metal parts, more power it would be truly an awesome product. The plastic interior parts one currently on the market, just has so much potential, but fails too soon a few months later after purchase.

Its flipped over dozens of times and it only bends the antenna a little. Very durable antenna.
awesome upgrades, looks great! I bought one of the for Christmas for my daughter. She ran about 5 or 6 batteries through it and stripped the rear drive shaft. This seems like a common problem with the power of the stock motor. What rear drive shaft do you use as I am looking to replace with one a little better? a lot of the reviews on the ones available say they don't tend to last very long.
I'm still using vvthe stock drive shaft. It's somehow lasted this long.

Sorry I missed your comment. I'm sure you worked it out by now but you simply unscrew the screws thru the bottom of the chassis and pull the motor out. You may have to also remove the dust cover over the gears if it won't pull out easily.
Excellent build and with style! I placed my order for one of these along with a set of oil shocks just yesterday. Any suggestions on maybe the top 3 upgrades aside from the fpv system? I have a limited budget but I did manage to snag up the truck for $60.
I live in Charleston and come from mostly a flying background.
If you're on a limited budget, then I'd would def do a link kit. The factory links are plastic and non adjustable. You already have shocks coming, and I'd prob put some wheel extenders and fatter wheels on. The stock motor and radio works pretty good so I wouldn't worry about that right now. most impressed with the controller mods, using even rechargeable aa's is just a pain in the arse so the battery mod is nice, that 4w booster is a nice addition to, how far do you get with that on open ground?
I am still searching for a place to really stretch it out. Unfortunately , in SC , there isn't a straight level road in the entire state. 300 meters is no problem so I imagine if I can find the right place , 1km is doable.

I just checked , and some of the suspension parts I ordered from Amazon have been discontinued. But Banggood sells tons of parts for this buggie. They also off a full upgrade kit with all aluminum suspension parts. The main item I recommend is adjustable tierods. The wheels and hub extenders are linked in the description of this video as well. I have a goolrc 3660 and it has a 5mm pinion and I bought the pinions for it and they're to big for the stock spur because they are M1. is there a replacement spur that is M1 for this truck?

The stock pinion gear module is actually a 32p 17T gear but I found a 0.8M 17T pinion gear for 5mm shaft motor that works just fine. The pitch is nearly identical. The 32P is standard and the 0.8M is metric . If I remember correctly, I touched on that in the video linked above do I hope that helps.

I've been planning a true range test , but finding a long straight road in SC is virtually impossible. But I know it will go 500 meters and hopefully will be able to test up to 1km.

I did a lipo mod and the thing popped wheelies going down hill! .... until I lost 4wd....now I have to replace the rear and front diffs
As I've mentioned in several comments, even though these are metal diffs, they are still limited in performance. Wheelies , doughnuts and burnouts are done with some risk of diff failure. I hope you get it back going soon. Take care.

very bad placing for camera and antenna. My sugestion is to put camera and antena inside the cockpit to avoid damage from crashs and rollovers. Also, servo on fpv camera mixed with steer cant be a good thing, because of sense of position. It is better to put camera control on a separated channel.

With stock electronics, 2s lipo and as big as you can fit. Definitely wouldn't do 3s on stock.

@@secretagb no I did not. No one ever asked and even though I wanted to, it's so item specific, that it would not apply to 99.9% of the people. It's very specific to my particular radio, and that particular booster and the chances of someone having both to do this mod would be slim to none....and slim left town. If it's something that could help you then perhaps I could try to help you somehow.

If you mean the blue metallic paint , then it was a can I've had a while that I picked up at an auto parts store a while back. The frame is simply sprayed with flat black . Sorry I don't have a better answer. Definitely need to prime first or else it will chip off very easily. Thx for watching.

I had a question about the signal booster being wired into your transmitter. Does it also help the fly sky reciever range? I ask because it's a wifi booster and I'm clueless like that lol. Also, it's designed to be powered through a wall plug and 120v. How are you powering it? Thanks for the info!
The booster is powered off the 3s lipo that I power the radio from . The wall plug that came with it is a 12vdc power supply so any 12vdc power input will work, and in this case it's my 3s lipo.
The booster by itself is what's extening the range. The Flysky RX is already a great RX and does a great job of staying locked in to that boosted signal.
If you have a Flysky radio, I can do a quick vid on how to mod it with the booster. But every radio will be different so if you have a different radio , your mod may be different.
Also I made a "Wind Surfer" parabolic signal extender that slides over the radio antenna that will also greatly improved range. I have a vid on that but search "wind surfer signal booster" and you will find free online plans to make your own. It literally only takes about 5mins to make.

Hey brother I have a question hopefully u can narrow it down for me I put a austar ax5s reciever a 25g servo and a goolrc 4500kv with a 35amp esc running 2s lipo. My problem is as I drive i will just be cruising and it acts like my brake is engaging sometimes when I stop it jumps I'm pretty certain it's not mechanical. I'm brand new to the hobby so I'm learning as I go. Any info u can provide would help i would appreciate it . Also the servo bar I have on it is stock and I noticed it's flexing any suggestions with that
I'll try my best. As far as the braking/jumping issue...most ESC's have a crude calibration function built in. It sounds like the ESC is slightly out of calibration. Try this. As soon as you plug in the lipo,( with the radio on) squeeze the trigger fully in the forward direction and hold for one second , then push the trigger away fully in the reverse direction for one second. Then release it to the neutral position. While you are doing this you should here some beeps or tones from your ESC. Be sure to center your throttle trim before doing this. I have several goolrc ESC's and this usually takes care of it.
Before doing the Calibration, try just centering the throttle trim , plug in the lipo and see how it feels. You may simply have too much brake trim set and centering the trim and adjusting from there may take care of it. If that doesn't help, then do the calibration.
As far as the servo horn deflecting and bending, they do sell metal servo horns online. Just be sure to maintain the same distance (roughly) from the servo horn screw to where the steering linkage attached so the proper turning ratio is maintained. Hope that helps.

Yes , the onboard DVR is recording straight off the camera and the camera has built in OSD voltage.
Sir I have a question. My wltoy 12428 is in stock mode, can i change the battery to a 2200mah 25c 7.4v? Is this battery plug&play or do i have to upgrade something else? I just wanted stock, just batteries. Can i also plug 3200mah? Etc.... Thanks for the answer..
As long as the voltage is the same (2s), and it will fit in the battery tray, the capacity doesn't matter. So, yes, you can run as big of a battery as you want as long as it's 2s
So the camera is wired to the DVR and the DVR is wired to the 5V regulator? Which regulator should I get? thanks :)
To be clear, the camera is powered off battery voltage (3S) and the OSD displays that.
The DVR is powered from a 5v buck converter.
The regulator I'm using is this

You need to dial it in for your exact voltage requirement. There is a small pot on it to dial it right in while checking the output voltage with a voltmeter.

@@M.TTT. most do run off 5v , this is a foxeer micro arrow that will take VCC.
