That makes sense. I think it will be great to hear more on this topic! Sorry, I don't have anything more significant to add. Thanks, Ren.😊

I find future projection easy but struggle with actions in the present. Those who are good in the present, Se doms especially, are not great at future projection. INFJ are often seen as lazy by ESTPs but they don’t appreciate that it’s largely due to INFJ nature.

Devaluing certain functions in our stack (i.e. devaluing parts of ourselves) does emerge from insecurities. But where do those insecurities come from? They always come from psychological injuries. These injuries are associated with adapting to our social environment to maintain connection and attachment, and often trace their roots to early childhood. So if this devaluation stems ultimately from wounds we bear, isn't the real task of integration to heal these wounds? To recover the traumatized parts of ourselves? And wouldn't an appropriate valuation of the different parts of ourselves (including our natural ways of engaging with the world and ourselves) follow naturally from the integration of our traumas and our darkness? Is it even possible to simply "choose" to revalue our cognitive functions without healing these injuries? And even if we could, would we be even close to actually becoming integrated human beings?

It's true our minds are always in the past or in the future. Being in the "present" is also possible, with mindfulness and meditation.
My perception about the individuation : Awareness, integration & acceptation of all our strengths/talents and weaknesses.
And live our life, find our place according to it (it can be in our out of society, still in the universe)
Using/developing our strengths/talents to help/improve others and the world.
It include each one of the 8 functions, we have learned each one of them, we accept and respect their position in our stack.
That we will always be bad with out weakest functions (example Fe for an INTJ).
It include neurological conditions, if we have, and Illness for certain persons. Accepting our differences. What make us unique.
Be a sage maybe ? Do you think N dom have an advantage, born with an extra level of awareness/wisdom which could make them individuated earlier than other types, because they connect the dots and learn faster from their mistakes ?

I look forward to hearing more about this subject, especially how to find that 'entry point' to find our place in the world as this is something I've been seeking for decades without success.
I've been working on integration/individuation for the last 20 years (I am 52) and I have made a lot of progress in many areas. One of the essential aspects, I would say, is a meditation practice. This has strengthened my ability to stay in the present moment and stay focused on reality as it is happening instead of constantly drifting into my own world. I think a crucial aspect of integration is also a sense of being 'in your body'. So some kind of physical activity which grounds your awareness in your body - for example, yoga, dancing, tai chi, martial arts etc - (along with journaling) all increase our ability to be present. So each level of awareness builds on another to create wholeness and synergy - mind, body, place, social environment, circumstances, historical grounding.

Interesting angle. Type gives certain strengths and certain weaknesses. I think full exploitation of one’s type strengths needs an awareness of one’s weaknesses. Otherwise our manifestation would probably contain flaws which diminish our strengths. Hope that makes sense. It won’t apply to all types of manifestation but particularly applies to worldview, politics and philosophy.

In the Cognitive Type system where did you mostly land?
Haha, sort of feel called out on deluding self into being integrated if separated from society and not engaging in extroverted functions. Dang! Roadblock. Geez, what can I really bring to Los Angeles? I am currently looking for that “entry point” and hoping it happens to find me first.

I was officially typed FeNi in that system. With Ti integrated. In fact, my type in that system is extremely close to Jordan Peterson's, except that I am Fe-adaptive and JP is Fe-directive.

I think you are right. The present is "always slipping away." The present moment or second goes too fast into the past for us to fully grasp it. The past is solid. The past can be observed and studied. The present is where history is made, full of change and chaos. I think the future, which doesn't exist, only exists in our imagination and planning. So the past is a realm in which we can exist as observers and students, and the future is a realm in which we can exist as dreamers and planners. The present is the distracting place of action and speech, the place of the senses. Is that why the INFJ is uncomfortable in the present (to some and varying extent)?

The INFJ and most types with not-so-well developed Pe (extroverted perception, whether Ne or Se).
I have an argument in my book that STJ types (with low Ne) are not as in-the-present as they seem.

Is individuation the same as enlightenment, or perhaps a path to it?

    • @StephanieJeanne
      @StephanieJeanne Před 10 měsíci +1

To me, it's discovering/developing your own identity separate from the larger world society. Whether or not it leads to enlightenment is probably up for debate, but I think it's part of it, depending on what you mean by enlightenment. We'll see what Ren has to say.✌️

I have a couple of questions. I recently watched an episode of QI, the British "game show," and the host brought up MBTI. She said that the whole thing is nonsense, that Meyers and Briggs had no training or education in this field, that the self-reporting nature of the tests make them invalid, and that people get different results each time they take the test. I think we know self-reporting is a drawback of the testing, but is it true Meyers and Briggs were untrained/uneducated? I have consistently tested the same from the first time when I had no idea about the different personalities to the second time when I still didn't to now whenever I have tested. Also, I wonder which personality types would be more prone to be skeptical of this kind of theory of personality (and its value).

Maybe their instrument of measure wasn’t full proof but there is something to their theories that are valuable to those looking to further explore the Self.

Hmm.. I think the existential satisfaction of the social function, which we associate with Fe, can happen in many nuanced and advanced ways - perhaps the highest amount of ways than ever before in human history.
I think the times when Fe can mainly find its expression through direct physical interaction are over. More than ever people are tuning into what their inner core has to say (especially the younger generation which I represent), and the result of this trend shows, for instance, in how much the virtual world is utilized and its value seen. People find their own niches and participate in their specialized communicaties. In the end, all activity there is done through a virtual medium - **that** is the channel for human interaction. And it satisfies many - including myself.
Really, the only thing the brain can be sure of, is of its own existence. *I think, therefore I am.* You can observe people in real life, but a similar reaction is created when the brain convinces itself that there is a human on the other side of the screen. Not for everyone is there an environment with the people that are fit for them - the escape into virtual realms turns out to be satisfactory, just right and helpful, really. Because in those vast lands reside, among many other people, some who have just the right products to offer. And if not - why not innovate and create one's own niche, and attract to oneself the people who resonate with you?
Many more ideas can be conceived with others, when you leave the physical confinements of your world, the immediate reality, the culture you live in and the people you meet on the street. Just find a good enough place on the virtual plains and try to imagine what this other digital human is feeling and thinking inside. To be in accord with others, and especially their flaws that come with being human, is to be in accord with oneself. To experience humanity, interaction itself is not all that is to it - reconciliation, synergy and harmony are unavoidable and absolutely crucial, too. All three of the latter can happen over virtual grounds. Can't interaction, therefore, be fulfilling too, if done online?
I think it can be. And it proves to be as such. So many perspectives exist, so much potential to realize and bring into fruition. This internet world is truly limitless and unlimiting. The beauty of the human mind and heart can still be seen and appreciated even through those funny little colorful pixels that light up on my phone screen.
    😉
