- Welcome to Hanoi Vietnam 🇻🇳 In this video we're back in Hanoi, Vietnam really making our first impressions of the big city (the last time we were only here for one night).
We start the video near the Old Quarter at a Sword Lake (Hoàn Kiếm). We take a walk around the tranquil lake and stop at the Ngoc Son Temple in the middle of the lake and walk across the red bridge.
Afterwards we head to the nearby St. Joseph's Cathedral of Hanoi, a huge french cathedral from the 1800s. We then walk to the famous "Train street", a small street that has a railway passing through.
Our hotel wasn't too far so we take you on a tour of our room at the very affordable Tirant Hotel (only $50/night) which is right in the middle of the Old Quarter.
Book our hotel here: www.booking.com/hotel/vn/hano...
Lastly we head to the "Western" area on Hanoi called Westlake. First we stop at a craft beer place called 7 Bridges Brewing and later have some delicious bao buns at Bao Wow.

HaNoi is more than 1000 years old. The streets are narrow. They expanded the city to a new modern area. Hanoi has a French quarter where all the architecture is French style. This French quarter today is the location of all foreign embassies. The Old quarter of Hanoi used to have 36 streets of selling the specific merchandise. Hanoi is very charming. When you want to cross the street in Vietnam, you just walk in confidence and all the scooters will avoid you. They go around you. If you hesitate, then you confuse them. You are in trouble. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video. Have fun and take care.
The french quarter is stunning and we're slowly learning how to cross the street 😅 - Anna
OMG finally, you guys seem like the only 2 tourists who aware of the size of the city......most tourists just made comments like Hanoi is very small, the streets are very narrow like Kathmandu in Nepal or Tibet ...... It's like they're magically arrived to the old French and ancient Vietnamese quarters from the airport and by past the rest of the new urban areas ......West Lake is where most expats live, so you guys won't get lost there. Great video ...
The city us feels enormous. At the same it's so beautiful with so many things to do. We love it! - Anna
Totally agree, most tourists think old quarter is the whole of Hanoi 😄

The cafes/bars definitely do exists, it's pretty crazy we were there the other night it was pretty fun, everyone cheered when the train came by lol, we were told 7pm then 730, then 8 lol it eventually came! I'll have my train vid up shortly if you wanna get the vibe! Also friend of a friend of mine owns Bow Wow! Canadian/Vietnamese owned! There is a on going competition in Hanoi currently to take a pic of a moustached vintage styled man walking around old quarter and sitting outside coffee shops. You will know when you see him
🥸
Man, I thought midday Las Terrenas traffic was heavy lol. Per usual the food and craft beer looks amazing! Keep ‘em comin!
haha yeah there's a little more traffic here Matty 😉 - Anna
Yes , the more motorbikes the crazier the traffic becomes !

Love Hanoi! Was there in 2012. I remember that island temple in the middle of the lake. Did you guys visit the tomb of Ho Chi Minh? We tried but got there after closing. I loved the amount of trees there too. Much more than at Ho Chi Minh City.
No we didn't visit that tomb unfortunately. But what a city right? Hanoi is fantastic TT - Trevor
Another Nova Scotia here. Loved Hanoi and would totally live there.
Such a great city right? We so can't wait to go back at some point 🤗 - Anna

Woh! I'm sure it was worth it 😋 - Anna
Hanoi looks friggin fantastic 😍 so glad my tour starts there, might have to turn up a few days early so I can explore! Safe for a solo female traveller?
You'll definitely want to have a few days in Hanoi for sure. We can't quite answer you're solo female traveller question sorry - Trevor
No worries, thanks 😊
@Jo Ayres Compare to many other country Vietnam is much safer Do not worry if you are solo female traveler
Thanks for sharing this! Question: is that just an over cast sky or is that air quality, as well?
Good question.. that's smog. Pretty typical in most large mainland Asian cities - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers Thanks for your reply :) I am visiting Nova Scotia this summer (went in 2018 loved it) and I have watched all your NS videos. They have been awesome. So, thank you!
I love Ha Noi 🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳
It's such a fantastic city right? 🤗 - Anna
We were wondering whether google maps had improved in Vietnam since we were there - apparently not! 😜 Did you find the people around the lake area super friendly? When we were there we met a lot of students who were keen to practice their English with foreigners around there.
Yeah everyone was friendly really. No one tried to practice English on us though haha. That would be fun 😀 - Anna
Hanoi's train streets coffee is back after 2 years of pandemic in April 27nd 2022
Right after we left... haha - Trevor
Side comment :). How did you get the nice subscribe click the bell animation in the beginning of your video. Looks like it is showing updated sub #'s. Thanks in advance.
Hard one to explain... it's a combo of photshop and some animations in final cut pro with text to update the subscribe count haha - Trevor
Banh mi n coffee r from the French. FYI. Oh also snail n snake. Enjoy.
Most temples in Vietnam are dedicated to war heroes - national heroes . That is an interesting thing.
Very! I don't think I knew that thanks LB 😀 - Trevor
@Delightful Travellers Trần Hưng Đạo with 3 times defeat Mongolian empire and Võ Nguyên Giáp who defeat French colony are 2 Vietnamese Generals were named for the 10 most greatest generals of all times of the world

Enjoyed your tour. Is there still any evidence of the bombing in the early ‘70s? Also saw a video that there is a lot of flooding from heavy rains the last few days.Good thing you went when you did.
We didn't see any evidence from the war at all. The cities are very modern and the nature is out of this world - Trevor
There are a few places from the war that have been turned into museums of sorts. I suggest watching Chris Lewis who went to a few of them about last year or so.
The air defense system of the North Việt Nam are good enough so there was not many bombing in the city, most bombing was in the rural, in the sea or especial in Trường sơn trails to prevent food, oil, weaponry, soldiers move to the South and in the South’s rurals where US army and the South can not control The most destructive bombing in Hanoi was at Bach Mai hospital and the next to village of Khâm thiên in Linebecker campaign while the US aimed to make Hanoi back to the stone ages but Hanoi created aluminium mining from the sky method Now evidences of bombing are some sites where US aircrafts were dropped down after be shot We Vietnamese love peace and not keep feud so evidence of sufferings often not impressive
🥰🥰🥰🥰
🤙
Ngoc Son temple is actually not a Buddhist temple . It`s dedicated to Marshal Trân Hung Dao , the national hero who defeated twice the Mongolian invaders in the 13th century . The name of this lake `Hoan Kiêm` means the Restored Sword Lake . It was after another event in the Vietnamese history . In the 15th century , the Chinese Ming invaded VN and king Lê Loi was offered a magic sword by a giant turtle living in the lake , helping him to kick the Chinese out . When the country was liberated after almost 20 years of war , one day king Lê Loi was riding on the royal boat around the lake , the turtle suddenly came out from the water and grabbed the sword with its mouth , from the king`s hand and disappeared in the muddy water . Even now , the Vietnamese people still believe that this magic sword was lent by the holy turtle to fight for the independence of the country . But once victory and peace were reached , the turtle wanted its sword back . Why this lake was named The Restored Sword Lake . Its original name was Luc Thuy Lake which meant the Blue Water Lake . The Vietnamese people always believe that the magic sword is still somewhere in the bottom of this lake
So good to know.. thanks for the info 🤗 - Anna

Can you go to Ho Chi Minh City(Saigon) Vietnam?
Next time! We won't make it on this trip - Anna
why don't you head to ho chi Minh city as well, the modern city and a ton of traditional food, and person are friendly too . I highly recommend it
It's quite a distance from Hanoi... maybe next trip 🤗 - Anna
Train streets closed for ever now sadly 😭 to many people got hurt . Makes sense tho lol
Oh we didn't know that. I can see why though - Trevor
👍👌💖
🤙
Hey, you said you were there in April. Did you mean May?
No April 😀We filmed a lot and we are releasing the videos each week - Trevor
👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🌻

Because I am the age I am, when I see the city name "Hanoi" my immediate first thought is not the delightful (and busy) city you showed, but the city capital of the communist "enemy" of the U.S. during the 60s and 70s. Time can indeed be a great healer. (BTW: I would sell one of my friends for one of those bao buns!) 😎
A lot has clearly changed since then. What a country 😀 - Trevor
I have a friend who's a vet of the war over there. He has returned a half dozen times to build schools and clinics far from the cities. (After the construction work is complete they usually rent motorcycles and do some traveling around the land for several days.) I've seen his pictures of villages and jungles. Seeing Hanoi now with you and Anna gives me a little balance of what the country is like these days. A nice picture indeed. 😎
How is the face mask situation at the moment?
Loaded question here in Vietnam. Everyone wears masks but not for covid purposes - Trevor
How polluted is Hanoi, it looks pretty smoggy in your vlog
It’s very smoggy yes but you don’t ‘feel it’ while you’re there if that makes sense - Anna

The VNese r hates day time bc it’s too hot. 👍
You are absolutely right !
@@tompham637 We noticed that a lot less people are outside in the day that's for sure - Anna
They're still wearing masks there... ughh. I love Vietnam but won't go back in time to a society that forces the population to cover their smiles.
Ummm mate it’s actually peoples choice to protect their health. Stop imposing your Trump agenda
Vietnamese people have been wearing masks since before the pandemic because of the pollution. Has nothing to do with COVID.
@@aznmochibunny I've spent many months in Vietnam back in 2016. Some people wore them, but not everybody. Now it looks like it's mandated to wear outside. I understand the fear but it makes travel a real bummer when you can't see faces. I'll stay in Europe until Asia lifts the silly mask rules.

A working train running through the neighbourhood I’m fairly certain would be a hard sell for the average realtor 😅! Between the ornate temple and the evening attractions, this city has a lot going on 🛵.
So much going on! We also wonder about real estate on train st now! Haha - Trevor
When I was in Vietnam in 1969, I had some real cheap housing, it was called a foxhole!
