  • It was 1962 and I was
    two years out of school
When I got on board a boat
    That was bound for Liverpool
    The day we sailed away
    I remember it so well
Took a look at the North Wall
    And bid a fond farewell
It's a hard thing to leave the land
    of your childhood
    Touched by the rivers
    And kissed by the sea
    The places you played
    with your childhood companions
To leave dear old Ireland and
    Mother Mo Chroi
Though I am going far away
And I may never return here
    There is one thing
    that I'll keep within me
Deep in my heart a furious devotion
The love of old Ireland and Mother Mo Chroi
On the top of the Pentonville Road
    I saw the sun setting
The town laid out before me
    Looked beautiful to me
    Away from all the sighing
    The suffering and the dying
    I dreamed of the future
    The young and the free
But the years they go by quickly
    Now I know I can't remain here
Where each day brings me closer
    To that final misery
My kids will never scrape shit round here
And I won't die crying in a pint of beer
I'm going back to Ireland and my Mother Mo Chroi

First song I thought of after I heard MacGowan died. Underneath that drunken slurring was some seriously beautiful poetry. RIP Shane!

Love this one... Shane tried several times during his time in the Pogues to get this one on an album, but it never fully materialised (Rough takes exist).
It wasn't until he experienced the artistic freedom he achieved by leaving the Pogues and starting his own band "The Popes" that he got around to working with the song and melody again and shaped it into this great song of sorrow and longing for his homeland, the green shores of Éire.
"Mother Mo Chroí" started life as "NW3" (which is the postcode for the area of London where Shane spent his youth.) It's worth checking out the version called "NW3", the melody is the same but the lyrics are completely different. Hope this offers some insight to new Shane fans.
    All the best, Davey...

I agree 100% my friend. Have you heard the 5-CD boxset called "Just Look Them Straight In The Eye And Say Pogue Mahone!"? There's an excellent version of NW3 on it.. I'm a huge Pogues fan, Shane is my favourite lyricist of all time, and I must say that the boxset was well worth every penny I spent on it. All five CDs are packed to the gills with amazing demos, live versions and alternate studio takes, spanning the Pogues entire career. Well worth tracking down! All the best, lots of respect from Davey in Longford Town, Éire.

I wish we had a solid cut of The Pogues' NW3. I prefer the bridge in that version, but I think this tune is better in every other regard.
