When they ask for your details try offering to give them your details in return for theirs, if they show you their driving licence or passport you'll give your details, that surely should counter being detained, they can't have grounds if you're willing to give details, obviously they won't show you their licence so you don't give your details

Never say you understand, it's an offer of obligation, and perhaps a contract. If it wasn't such an important term he wouldn't use it so often.
when you're detained I recommend just remaining silent and ask them to tell you when it is finished.
