  • Dr. Michael Zakian organized the first Agnes Pelton survey exhibition as a young curator at Palm Springs Desert Museum (now Palm Springs Art Museum) in 1995. Because of this early experience, Dr. Zakian had wonderful anecdotes and stories about working on that exhibition. Discover insights and deep knowledge on one of Pelton’s most important paintings "Mother of Silence" that he shared at the opening of Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist in 2019 at Phoenix Art Museum. As a tribute to his tenacity and scholarship on the subject, we present this small but enlightening excerpt.

My mother owned MOS from the late 70s til the 90s when she read about it being the lost painting of Agnes Pelton in the local newspaper. She contacted the local museum and now you all can enjoy it. Stories say she was a little old lady that didn't know what she had. She had it displayed above her bed from my teen years til adulthood.
Out whole family loved that painting and I was sad to see it leave our home. I haven't seen it since
