My band was the local opener for 6FU around 2004 or so. Admission was $35 (for three locals and Six Feet Under). Roughly 1/2 of the tickets went unsold and Chris Barnes decided that it wasn't worth playing, so their merch guy grabbed the cash box and literally sprinted to the bus and the band left.
Since we heard what happened right when we were done playing, we took our time tearing down our gear while an announcement was made saying that 6FU had canceled. A rumor started circulating the crowd that we ran overtime and that 6fu couldn't play because we bumped them (which we didn't).
Long story short, I had to escape getting my ass beat by like 250 drunk Chris Barnes loyalists because the band literally decided at the last possible second that they weren't going to play, but stole all the money from the show making refunds difficult/impossible.

Replacing Chris Barnes with Corpsegrinder was the best thing Cannibal Corpse ever did for themselves. Barnes' voice started to die off right around the Bleeding, and CC were getting better musically with each passing album. Barnes was the only person in that band who wasn't interested in growing his skills. He was happy just writing about stabbing queefs or whateverthefuck and blazing in his hotel room. And at the same time, the rest of the band matured and focused on being the best they could be. They needed a singer with the same mindset (not to mention someone who would actually take care of their voice) or they would implode. George was that guy. He may be a Warcraft-obsessed manchild, but he’s still 100% committed to his craft and takes care of his voice very well.
And look at where the two bands are now. CC are still making solid albums in their 50s, whereas SFU and Chris Barnes are walking memes.
Cannibal Corpse saved their careers with that move.

6-7 years ago when I was still on Facebook and followed their official page, they announced an European tour. It was mostly circling around Germany, Belgium and the surrounding countries. I was six beers deep, an asshole and commented, that doing gigs in four countries doesn't count as a tour of Europe, when you leave out close to ten other countries. A few hours later I got a private message from their page. Someone was asking, if I could organize gigs for them. I've never booked gigs, even with my own band and nothing on my page suggested, that I knew anything about booking a tour. At that time I was working in a warehouse. Took it as a sarcastic joke. But it wasn't, they were serious.

True Carnage and Bringer Of Blood may aged badly, but they were pretty important at the time. They were heavily influenced by Nu Metal and Six Feet Under became an important gateway band to extreme metal. You saw young kids running around in their merch, who probably never heard about Cannibal Corpse and didnt give a shit about the "classic" DM sound on albums like Haunted. They were there for the stoner guy with dreadlocks doing rap growls over groovy and bouncy riffs. Heck there were straight up guest features by rappers. Thats what started the journey into DM for many people and deserves some credit.

You're exactly right here. I loved Six Feet Under, and when metal music went into the Nu era, SFU seemingly followed suit. Old heads like me hated it, but it honestly catapulted them out of the obscure and onto some huge metalfests. For that next generation of kids, SFU just was Death Metal. They didn't know the better stuff yet and the internet was just getting going. I cringed at him repeating Bringer of Blood over and over to that lame riff, but it was exactly like you stated, a gateway to extreme music.

The only real problem is - they should have quit the band when Steve Swanson left, and I still don't get it why Chris didn't just start a new band with Jack Owen instead of using the same old brand that once stood for something. I saw Chris Barnes at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

What I did want to say that while most of my friends in the death metal scene in the early/mid/ late nineties loved Cannibal Corpse and Chris Barnes, when six feet under came out and corpse grinder was doing his thing with Cannibal Corpse, we kind of dogged his shit because we were loyal to Chris Barnes and Hammer Smashed Face, and everything else kick ass that he did. I still remember the comparisons that "Corpsegrinder ain't no Chris". That much is true. But they are both unique singers and bring something different to the plate. As I've gotten older in the last twenty years I have come to both appreciate and respect corpsegrinder for what he did with Cannibal Corpse. I loved the absolute crap out of Vile, hit after hit, including Bloodlands. I also still love chris barnes and early six feet under as well. Innate biases of the past aside, I love them both.

You can tell the step up in quality when it’s basically Chimaira writing and playing the music

Rob is one of the last best true metal compositors, his job with Chimaira a and six feet is a school to learn

I remember he also assaulted Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. I believe he posted something on Twitter along the lines of "not being a veggie burger eating pussy" and when Travis went to his tour bus to confront him, Chris sucker punched him. Cattle dropped from the tour, but played the same venues a day later for free with a few local bands, so fans didn't miss out. I got to hang out with Travis and he mentioned how sad it was to have someone he grew up listening to act like that. Cattle definitely showed what it was to be a masterclass.

I actually really like the album Unburied to be honest. Something about his vocals on that one just sound killer.

As someone who grew up when SFU was releasing their first few albums, it saddens me to see this.
I remember when Maximum Violence came out!! Dude.... there was nothing like it.
Haunted and Warpath with always be my favs, their sound changed a lot after that and got more muddy and (I think) they started tuning down. True Carnage was the last album I purchased of theirs, it just wasn't the same.
Welp, time to spin up some Haunted!!
    Great video!!
