  • This video shows Rabbits and Brown Hare seen near a community based nature reserve. This video was filmed on the 30th July 2024.
Hi everybody - and thanks for coming back to our channel
It’s the middle of summer now. It is well after 9pm so we are rapidly approaching dusk at the end of a hot dry summer day.
It’s exactly the sort of evening when we’d expect there to be plagues of midges, but there is a strong breeze at the moment and this is keeping them at bay.
I don’t want to say exactly where I am, but we are at the edge of some fields between a grouse moor and a new community-based wildlife reserve.
Recently, we have seen lots of rabbits in this general area - so many that, to some people, they might even say it’s a plague which it isn’t.
Rabbits are very sociable animals which live in community homes called warrens.
You can see from the rabbits that they are relatively small animals, which often sit upright, but are not very tall and have shorter floppy ears.
They can run at up to 35 miles per hour.
Rabbits are up to 40cm in length and weigh up to 2 kilos. They are usually a grey-brown colour; they have dark brown eyes and a white tail like a fluff-ball.
This evening, though, we are blessed with seeing several Brown Hares in the field. This is slightly unusual, as Brown Hares are normally very shy and solitary animals.
Hares rest in a scrape in the ground or in deep vegetation; and they do not have a communal home like rabbits do.
All these hares look very relaxed, They are feeding well and occasionally they do lollop around the place.
You can see that the Brown Hare is a much larger animal than the rabbit.
The hare often lies low in the landscape, but it is tall when it stands and it does have very large ears.
The Brown Hare is up to 75cm in length and it weighs up to 5 kilos.
They can run at up to 45 miles per hour when being chased.
Brown Hares are usually a russet brown colour and have a pale-coloured belly, white tails with a black top, amber-coloured eyes and long black-tipped ears.
It’s been a long while since we’ve seen so many hares all in one place. It’s been great to see.
We are definitely going to come back to this place to check on them to see how they are doing.
