Yosemite Mountain Lion vs. Coyote

  • Yosemite mountain lion appears to be treed by two coyotes. In fact what is going on is a mother mountain lion is distracting the coyotes from her two cubs. The mother mountain lion and her cubs were feeding on a deer in the Ahwahnee Meadow when the coyotes arrived on the scent.

    Very intriguing, this video. She knows what she is doing. She is dealing with three threats, the two coyotes and the human camera man, distracting you all from her cubs. You can see how she is constantly calculating. She is running this show. That is why she is so calm.

    This great video just increases my admiration and respect for these highly intelligent, elusive, classically very shy, and super gorgeous, highly athletic cats. Just like this mother cat, cougars are so stately and smart, she was cleverly distracting the coyotes to protect her little cubs. All big cats make great moms.

      Amazing footage. Makes you realise just how truly wild Yosemite really is, and dangerous. Hope that you had more protection than just a camera. I suppose that the Park Ranger's wouldn't like it if people took rifles for protection into the park. I was worried about you for a while there, fortunately they were too busy with each other than worry about you. Also I suppose that they're somewhat used to people? ziska dor yeah because they sit around with a calculator and play odds all day... I was born not far north of here and lived in these mnt's all my life and if they are just slightly hungry they will go after a lot of animals. about 60 miles north of here so really in the daily hunting zone for this cat, One jumped a fence and killed two rots before the owner could get to his window. They will kill and eat their own. some cats will be cool but most attack because this area is getting over populated.

    • @suncheets1
      @suncheets1 Před 9 lety +29

      ***** Actually they do, because unlike pack hunting species such as wolves cats are solitary hunters and cant afford to get injured. If a pack hunter gets injured it can rely on the pack for food and such until it heals and gets better or dies. Cat species usually weigh the benefit vs the potential for injury, now if the area is over populated then the species might have to resort to drastic measures.

      @rollinrat4850 Před rokem +6

      @@lorellehugostino975 Theres no point in irrational fear or drama. Such folks should just stay home and 'safe' however. I've heard of one mtn lion attack in the more local areas Ive explored in over 30 years. The guy survived. He was lost, hurt and made lots of survival mistakes that made him look like an easy meal.
      I see foot prints, scat, big bones, even rotting carcasses all the time. I know areas cougars, bobcats and coyotes like to hunt and I'm not afraid travel through them. They're looking for an easier meal than me. I just calmly leave the area if I have a concern. I see lots of other wild animals too.
      I've personally encountered 3 mtn lions in remote areas over several decades.
      The first one was about 100 feet away down a steep hill, fighting with a coyote over a dead feral pig. That was an eye opener! Another one we almost ran into in a dark forest on a cloudy day. It was only 10 feet away before we saw it coming out of a creek bed. It was sort of freaky, but this majestic creature was totally calm, we stood still and watched each other for awhile and the cat simply disappeared silently into the forest. Another time, over 11000 ft. up in the Colorado Rockies, our dogs tree'd a mountain lion near a spring. This was the only time I was sorta scared but I knew the cat just wanted to get away from us. We called our dogs back. They were definitely having 2nd thoughts too! We have big strong mountain dogs with us pretty often. They're like a security detail. They are great first warning. Dogs are an excellent distraction for bears because they're related to canines.
      We must remain level headed and calm when encountering wild animals. Animals can literally smell your fear.
      I've had lots more fairly close encounters with black bears in the Sierra Nevada mtns. As long as we're alert, careful, calm and rational, wild animals just want to keep their distance and go about life, just like us. They're not normally stalking humans. But people behave in stupid ways that attract wildlife. You just can't act like an unpredictable idiot around big wildlife.
      I definitely hope to stay completely clear of grizzly or brown bears and have avoided them so far.
      I explore remote areas often alone and often carry weapons to survive. Ive never needed to use one or felt endangered. I sleep out there alone as well. Target practice during the day, music, singing, bells and a big campfire are great ways to keep animals at a comfortable distance.
      I've been enjoying the outdoors all my life for well over half a century. I very rarely camp in public campsites. I want to get away from society. I feel pretty comfortable coexisting with wild animals and truly respect them. I actually feel lots more peaceful and calm than I do living near a big city.
      Honestly I'm more concerned about feral pigs that are invading everywhere. They're far more unpredictable than most other wild animals. These NEED to be hunted and eradicated. They're an invasive species which natural predators can't keep in control. They are often hunted or trapped and destroyed in lots of areas. They make for tasty BBQ though! Pig hunting is good fun!

    I always knew big predators existed and were nearby, having been raised by outdoors enthusiasts. I knew mtn lions were around and lurking unnoticed.
    Weve often found footprints, scat, large bones and carcasses. At Henry Coe State park (largest park in Norcal) just south of the San Jose Bay Area, I saw my first mtn lion about a hundred feet away. It was chasing off two coyotes trying to steal a dead feral pig. Exciting and noisy, but not much of a fight....
    My 2nd encounter was much more thrilling, yet totally peaceful. We were riding mtn bikes up a very steep road, concentrating on the trail ahead to keep from falling over. It was in a thick forest on a heavily clouded day. It was pretty dark in the forest. My friend just ahead started waving his arms. Barely ten feet in front of him was a huge mtn lion we didn't even see due to our distractions. It must have been climbing up out of a creek. It was pristine, beautiful, huge, well fed and totally at ease with us right there. We just stood still and observed as this glorious cat moved silently off into the brush. VERY impressive animal up close.

      Well, actually coyotes do inhabit most places wolves still survive in. Yes wolves commonly kill coyotes as they do any other predators they see as competition and are capable of killing. In places wolves have been reintroduced they are providing real challenges for the mountain lions. The lions are having a very hard time successfully raising young around wolves. If you doubt what I'm saying, check out Yellowstone. All three species live there. You might want to be sure of your facts before you start trying to call somebody out.

    It's interesting to see the cougar on top of the fence barrier. It takes a very agile animal, when of this size anyway, to walk along the top of this fence barrier as if a tight-rope walker w/o a balancing stick or whatever they're called. Coyote or canine surely could never walk across the top of this fence barrier.
    So mamma cougar protected her young & you clearly weren't in danger. ++

    That cat would kill both those coyotes. She was distracting them from her cubs. Read the description.

      Cougars get chased by hounds and take to the trees before being shot by hunters. Those felines though more powerful than hounds are easily afraid, and fight back only as a last resort, when cornered. Cougars are supposed to hunt harmless animals or fight for territory, but not other carnivores, be they coyotes or hounds.

    What an awesome cat! No bravado, no pride full willingness to fight for no practical purpose, despite it's superior ability (and no doubt confidence!) Just pure logic and tactics to avoid whatever nonsense can be avoided.... no?
