Coach Nick breaks down exactly how Luka Doncic destroyed the Suns and led his Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals. Without any major adjustments, Monty WIlliams seemed content to hope Luka missed, and that simply didn't happen.

In 1969 the Lakers were playing in their home floor for game 7 of the NBA finals against a much older and weaker Celtics team. Apparently the staff had put up balloons and even signs that were saying the lakers were gonna win the championship before the game even started. The Suns were sadly a very philosophically rigid/stubborn team. Lack of adjustments and a system that was better for the regular season than the post season. Soft switches, too little zone, not getting the ball out of Luka’s hands early, and very unwilling to go small when the Mavs spaced the floor.
Their offense was too reliant on CP3 and Booker. They absolutely needed a third perimeter threat to create offense. They didn’t utilize Ayton enough for me on offense to punish mismatches.

I might add, for Ayton he's just a bit too fast but he's way too crafty for Ayton to keep up. He plays mind games when he's dribbling against Ayton and he just ends up putting that poor guy in a dance routine trying to keep up because Ayton can't tell if he's about to cross him over to a step back or dribble drive kick out or score off of dribble penetration altogether.

The text book is make Luka work and limit his team mates, if you zone up on him and put pressure on him he'll just get everyone else going and when that's happening people are hesitant to leave their guy and you end up with a weak zone Luka can score at will on anyway.

The problem the Suns had I think was roster construction. They can only play one way and the way they play is a very, very bad matchup against the Mavs.
The Suns rely on 3 and D wings (Bridges, Crowder, and Johnson) with a shot-blocking 5 to play defense. They don’t play a small ball without a traditional 5. This is a huge problem against Luka.
    Why? For several reasons,
    1) allows Luka to target your traditional 5 for mismatches.
    2) Luka is able to overpower or out quick most elite wing defenders.
    3) Luka gets to hide on defense. The Suns were able to target him with CP3 in Game 2. But not afterwards. And more importantly their best offensive player Booker was not able to target him. Kidd got Luka to engage more defensively while also protecting him more within their scheme. Hiding Luka means he gets to only play and focus on offense.
    4) Wing defenders that are limited offensively also limit your offensive ceiling. They can’t create if your top creators are struggling and make the game easier for your top guys. You4 top guys essentially have to do it themselves.
The Clippers were the best team in the West before Kawhi went down last season and they eliminated the Mavs the prior two seasons. They did while absorbing huge offensive games from Luka including a dominant Game 7 performance from Luka.
They did it by going small and limiting who Luka could target. It’s a different story going after Batum, Kawhi, PG or Marcus Morris versus Ayton. Going small allow them to play a 2-3 zone and even a triangle and 2 at times.
Luka also had to work defensively. The Clippers put out lineups that had five good offensive players on the court.
This is why the Warriors are still the favorites they can play small and limit who he targets, they have the firepower to remain in the game during Luka goes off, and Luka will need to play both sides of the ball. The Suns weren’t built with enough flexibility to beat a 5 out team with one of the best playoff scorers the league has ever seen.

I guess you highlighted this in the 4th point, but It's worth emphasizing again that their offense is so "one-way" to the point that it's an even narrower road on offense because it is highly predicated on the ability of an elite PG to facilitate said offense. When your offense is reliant on a 37 year old to get the ball rolling and set the tone, it's just waiting to be exploited. Their second star can't play-make at any decent level for the entirety of a single game, and without CP3 they often look completely lost on what to do when the opposing team's defensive scheme can't be shook.

And he dominated in this games at age 18. A Game 7 in the Playoffs is childs play compared to an away game in the Euroleague at Red Star, or Fenerbahce, or Panathinaikos, or Olympiakos, or ZSKA...
He just is unstoppable. All you can do is hope that his shot is off (like in Games 3, 4 and 5) Thats the only chance any team has to sat least contain him. Why are the Euro-leagues not the pinnacle of global basketball? This is the first generation where we've had more than 1 great European player, and look how many of them made it to the NBA very, very young and/or early in their careers. They had their adolescences in European ball clubs, but they grew into men in the NBA.
They are getting more competitive and producing more good and especially more great players...but anyone who says a Game 7 in the playoffs is "child's play" is shooting up pure, unadulterated delusional hyperbole straight to the prefrontal cortex.
As far as him dominating for the next decade, I think Tatum, Giannis, Embiid, the Warriors, and any number of up-and-coming players like Ant Man are going to have something to say about that. I sincerely doubt, for instance, that he'll make it 3 consecutive NBA Finals in the next decade, let alone 5, as the Dubs did...and 9 is entirely out of his reach.
Hell, him making it to 3 non-consecutive over the next 10 would require him to either massively overperform, Dallas to draft/trade EXCEEDINGLY well, or to have at least a couple superstar free agents decide to team up with him.

@@MrBrachiatingApe I am not talking about the quality of the players. Of course they are not as good. Like the MLS is nothing compared to the Champions League and your National team never wins anything at the World Cup or Olympics. The best MLS team wouldnt win a game against any Champiosnleague team. But they are still pros, who are way better then any college Soccer team.
I am talking about the hostile athmosphere inside the arenas. Just go and look up some Fan Videos. How often have you seen hundreds of fully geared Riot Squat police men during NBA games holding back thousands of fans so they dont kill the opponents players right there? Or opponents fans for that matter? Happens every week in southeast and south europe, specially if there are important games.
And never in the history of european Basketball was there a player like Luka. A player with his talent, who dominated the best european clubs AND who had the chance to go to the NBA early. I can think of Drazen Petrovic (couldnt join the NBA before 25) and Arvydas Sabonis. You know... the guy who destroyed your college kids at the 1988 Olympics and forced the US to send NBA players in 92... Those guys were probably as great as Luka at age 17-18... but in the modern day era post UDSSR? Noone. There's a reason why noone ever won a EuroLeague MVP at age 18... EVER! Guys like Jokic, Giannis or even Dirk, Gasol and so on didnt even play in the Euroleague cause they werent good enough.
I try another example that you as an american might understand. NBA is MLB, EuroLeague is AAA, G-League is AA, College is A... and now think of a 17-18 years old kid dominating the AAA, breaking records and leading his team to the Championship, while simultaniously winning the League MVP. What do you think, how often do you see such a talent? Oh and he is a comat veteran, who did 3 tours in Irak. You think this guy is mentally tough? Do you think he will feel any fear or pressure playing in a NBA Playoff game?
Why do you think Luka averages 38 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 8.8 APG in 4 elimination games in the Playoffs while shooting 53.4% from the Field, 43.4% from 3? Cause he feels so much pressure and cause he lacks the experience? Curry as a comparison: 27.5 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 7.2 APG, .428 FG%, .376 3P%. Doesnt mean he is bad, not at all. Those are great numbers, even HOF Numbers! But nothing compared to Luka! And Curry hadnt even played one PO game at age 23.
