- Great to see Auckland finally turning on the weather for us to go out wide so the plan was made with Kaz and Gen to do a trip to Channel Island area to do some Super Light Jigging with some new rods that Ocean’s Legacy has just released.
Super Light Jigging is working lighter Slow Pitch Jigs between 30g to 130g by casting it ahead of the drift and covering a wide area all the way from front to back of the boat, most of the bites happen near the bottom so thin braid and a strong but sensitive rod is required.
We caught a wide variety of fish with Gen landing the biggest Granddaddy Hapuka I’ve seen and a big trevally, Kaz with a few Gurnard and Perch, I caught a strong Porae and Wrasse, and of course a bunch of Snapper in the mix.
It was a great learning experience for me watching Gen and Kaz, there is a lot of thought into what colour and weight of jig to use, testing different styles and jigging techniques throughout the day to work out what is best, and the rod/reel/braid/leader balance is important as well.
Super Light Jigging (SLJ) is a light version of Slow Pitch Jigging using a spin reel setup and gives you the ability to cast out wide, ahead of the drift, back of the drift, or straight up and down. The smaller jigs, typically between 30g to 90g help entice the bite or to imitate small bait fish.

do u prefer spinning reels?
I like both spin and overhead
hi, wondering what’s the advantage of using a spin set up vs overhead? Thanks
Hi Richard, in this instance where the current was very strong the advantage of spin is being able to cast well ahead of the drift, so the lure hits the bottom just as the boat drifts past
@@FishoDavo awesome , appreciate the reply and thanks for another awesome video. Learn lots front these
