- I'm going to show you the 6 different rod actions I use in Slow Pitch Jigging to work the jigs
Going from basics to advanced, I will take you through how to "lift, wind, and follow" your SPJ rod and reel setup to create different jig actions, how to target different water columns based on the species, what jigs to use based on the drift speed, and a few tips throughout the video.

As always, super useful and clear information. Great tutorial again Dave. Thank you so much!
Thanks bro!
Far out this is the most no-muck arounds, straight to the point tips video I've ever seen 🤣👌 great tutorial tho mate learned so much when we went our SPJ fishing last weekend
Thanks bro, awesome to fish with you!
Once again I’m very impressed by your presentation . By far the best and fully explained slow pitch videos I have seen and I’ve seen a lot.
I would like to know more about the effects on lure action by having hooks on both ends, also of putting a small squid skirt on one end . Thanks . Rod.
Thanks Rod that is a big acknowledgement. Having hooks on both ends should actually increase the flutter time as the jig will receive greater balance. We often use another single or double hook on the other side but more for the purpose of increasing hookup rate, it's fine to put a squid skirt on one or two sides too and we do this with the Ocean's Legacy Tako-bait assist hooks. I think the ratio of jig weight to hook weight means the added hooks on either side won't make a huge difference to jig action
Thanks mate
I'm just getting into kayak fishing here in NW Florida.
Great tips.
Looking forward to getting good at slow pitch jigging
Thanks mate!
This is the most insightful spj technique tutorial I have seen. Thank you. You have sparked my interest to invest in the equipment and begin practicing using the techniques you have shown.😊
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy the new technique
Dave ,
The Best tutorial video , very well explained!! Enjoyed every minute of it, I'm new to slow pitch! Thanks and Million Likes brother!!

Thank you for this! Getting a jigging set up soon so this helps alot.
Awesome mate, all the best! Report back later on how you go. There is another slow pitch tutorial on my channel too that talks through the full process
Nice , love slow pitch jigging
It’s such fun
Nice instructive video
Thanks for watching!
Good work davo! well explained
Thanks bro!
Thanks mate for the very clear tutorial watching here from the Philippines i can use now my new fishing reel and rod and my new lures God bless 👍👍🙏🙏
Thanks mate have fun!!
Ive always used popper and stickbaits. Trying them Synotek subzero slow pitch jigs in Cairns for first time ever and absolutely loved the jigging method. Much easier than casting and popping 😅. Thank you for showing these awesome techniques 🤙🤙
Thanks for watching!
I'm just getting into slow pitching here in the UK and your vid has helped me understand a bit better how to. Many thanks bud and tight lines.
Thanks for your kind comments, do you have a youtube channel or Instagram? Would love to watch your SPJ journey
@@FishoDavo I do bud. It's called Skull n Bone kayak fishing UK. I'll post vids when I can of the times I'm jigging and I have already had a nice Wrasse of around 4½lb. The weather here is rubbish ATM. More like winter winds than summer but here's hoping I get out soon. 🙏
Awesome mate, I have subbed to your channel
@@FishoDavo Nice one bud. Thanks a million. I need all the help I can get atm haha. 👍
Good technique bro! Thanks for sharing. Awesome video!!!
Cheers man! Thanks for watching
Big thanks
You're welcome!
Well said mate.. it helps to learn new technique
Thanks, all the best!
gr8 tips dave.
Thanks Peter!
Hey bro came from Daiwa reel owners group , remember the saltiga ic 100. Subscribed to your channel really good content 👍
Hey bro, cheers for the sub!
Thanks bro for sharing your video.
Thanks Ronnie
Thank you my friend :)
Thanks! 😀
Very good explanation..
Thanks Jeff!
Thanks
No problem
Great video but you really should use plastic lip grips because those metal ones are putting massive holes through the bottom of ever fish's mouth. Perfectly explained video though man. Thanks for taking the time to create this great content
Good idea, I'll have to get one of those plastic lip grips. Thanks for watching and taking the time to give the advice
So here is an awesome tip.
Change your braid from one colour to multiple colours. Every colour is 10m..so, look at your fishfinder see the depth, then let the line out till you reach the depth of the colour.
Doing this means you dont get snagged up, you already know when you are getting to the bottom by colours.
You welcome, enjoy.
Yup awesome tip thanks!
Another great tutorial video mate, plenty of tips for people no matter what skill level you are. Keep up the great work! How do you find lure fishing from a ski compares to doing it on your boat?
Thanks Glen, I'm happy with either having fished on both for a while, I just find the full jigging motion a bit restricted on the ski.
Thanks for the awesome content, what know do you use for joining braid to leader for SPJ? Thanks
Thanks! I mostly use the FG knot
love your vids as always davo, ive been converted to lures i dont use bait anymore and i always watch ur vids for tips and its helped and upskilled me alot and ive also shared ur knowledge to my family and friends thanks again , just a question the rod u use is obv quite expensive whats another rod thats decent price for slow jig pitching
Thanks for all your support, check out the Ocean's Legacy Slow Element, it's designed as a low cost and powerful SPJ rod, I have lots of friends using this model
Great video thanks. Wondering what sort of leader strength you use for the gulf? Thanks in advance
Thanks Richard, I think 25-30lb is good for the gulf if you're not expecting a Kingfish to take you into a nearby reef. When targeting Kingfish I use my 60-80lb SPJ setup
Thanks, much appreciated
Nice video , what 2 jig colors would you say you have had the most success with wen (specifically) going after snappers ?
I find the blues and silvers have worked best for me, also pink as well
good day Davo , nice video , wondering what is the right ocean depth for jigging ? , i lost my jig the other day at about 8 meters depths , it got hooked at the reef maybe....
I think 8m is a bit shallow, as you'll be jigging up 1m at a time so it won't have enough time in the water. 20m minimum for me at the moment for Slow Pitch. If I'm microjigging or softbaiting then 8m no problem
Nice video bro! keep it up! we need to get out for a fish together soon
Thanks bro! Sorry bout last week 🤣
@@FishoDavo all good bro! Next time!
heya FishoDavo, did you use leader line in your setup for slow pitch jigging?
Yes definitely use matching or slightly higher breaking strain fluorocarbon. Braid will break too easily on fish teeth or reef
Hey bro. Can you use softbait rods to use small suitable slow pitch jigs?
You can but it depends on the softbait rod. For example you can use a PE2 softbait rod to fish 30-90g slow pitch jigs , we do that often and call it Super Light Jigging as a term
Wherr did you get your vest, with all the pockets?
JetPilot Venture Vest
What slow jig weight would you use for 30-40m depth?
I'd probably use 100-120g for that depth, general rule heavier is fine, as you'd want the line as vertical as possible and lure near the bottom
My Dilemma is always the same.Which reel should I buy.
Im looking at Shimano Ocea 4000 Hg and Shimano Ocea 2000 NR.
Any tips please ? Thanks
I think the 2000 is suited for everyday lighter use around pe1.5 up to 100m, while the 4000 is for jigging big fish in reefs or deeper water where you need more line capacity or stopping power
@@FishoDavo thanks for your advice.
hey dave, is slow pitch jigging and slow jigging the same?
In Japan Slow Pitch Jigging is called Slow Jigging as in Japan Kabura fishing is call Tai Kabura. In NZ/Australia we call Kabura fishing Slow Jigging as we basically wind the jig up slowly. So the answer to your question depends on the country. Slow Pitch means you Pitch the jig up to have it flutter, Slow jigging means to slowly wind the jig up, fast or mechanical jigging is winding the jig up fast.
can i use this technique on landbase jigging?
Land-based would be quite different, you'd need to use lighter jigs, different rod for casting, and work the jig and ensure it doesn't get stuck on the bottom
hi Dave, want to know the brand and type of your rod and reel thanks
Hi Andy, Ocean's Legacy Origin Slow Jigging PE2.5 and Accurate BV300L-SPJ. BTW in the description of the video there's also details of lures used too
@@FishoDavo thanks a lot😁
What size in that reel would you recommend for yellowtail?
Yellowtail kingfish? Over a reef I would say 4000-5000. Over sand you can play them safely can use 2000-3000
@@FishoDavo for California yellowtail
@@BlobEyeMauri I think we are talking about same fish then
Is it better to put leader line for SPJ?
Yes, I use about 1 metre of fluorocarbon for leader. You don't want it to be braid only, as braid is easy to cut by reef and sharp teeth
@@FishoDavo thanks Dave !
Follow up question, what joining knot do u use for joining braid and leader?
is a slow jigging rod essential to do slow jigging? cant i just use a normal jigging rod and adjust my technic?
Just give it a go, there's no right or wrong and the fish will decide. I find it easier and more enjoyable with the right rod, it will lift the jig better and provide more sensitivity to feel the bite
a normal jigging rod wil be too stiff / fast for slow pitch but u can use affordable rods as slow pitch i am someone who likes regular jigging rods for all around use so i've been through this if you want the cheaper answer that gives u a good rod if u dont like slow pitch try the 7' tsunami trophy 2 its an inshore surf style spinner thats fully parabolic its only $100 the only recomendation id make otherwise is to glue the rod and make it one piece it comes as a 2 piece but its a 75/25 2 piece so only the reel seat is on the second piece its made to be glued after purchase use epoxy and glue it its a great slow pitch rod
