- While Oliver Askew was basically a one-and-done in his Indycar career he's still gone on to have a successful motorsports resume. Perhaps he'll return to the series but for now, he's labeled an Indycar bust.

Honestly, this is one of the most debatable "IndyCar Busts" I have seen in recent memory. He was unlucky, and the Indy 500 wreck made everything worse. I wish he was given another chance.
Same here. Kinda sad seeing him not getting another chance.
Well to be fair, Darian's definition of a racing bust is different from say, Ryan Holman. He's got higher standards.
He DOMINATED IndyLights....I really can't believe he didn't get another chance. I know some people said thats how Indycar works, but with his high pedigree, I find it unbelievable.

Sad that he tried to hide a concussion just to make sure he didn't lose his ride, only to lose it anyway once the team found out.
That kind of glosses over the fact that his management said the team didn't care about his health but how can they care about his health when they're actively lying about his health.
He wasn’t a bust, he deserved so much better.
One of the problems is, in IndyCar, you usually don't get a second chance. If you don't excel right away, you're out, and if you can't land a ride with another team right away, you're just out of the series altogether. In NASCAR, if a driver can't quite get it done in Cup, they can go to the Xfinity or Truck series, and either work their way back up, or even have a career in the second or third-tier series. If you don't get it done right away in IndyCar, you're jut history. (Just ask Carlos "two-time Indy 500 runnerup" Munoz.)

@Matt Goelz Ferrucci didn't deserve any chances at all. After the stuff he pulled in F2 he should've never been allowed in or near motorsport for the rest of his life.
@@samhobbs6517 Didn't say whether or not he deserved it, I'm just saying he's an example of someone who got a second chance. And we all do stupid stuff, seems to me like he's learned and matured a little bit after the F2 incidents
I wouldn't entirely call Askew a bust, more like a bad stint for him in IndyCar. I still question to this day why McLaren let him go because he had so much potential to at least be as competitive as Pato if he would have gotten another season or two to prove his worth. It's a shame though the concussion from Indy pretty much derailed everything. Glad he's at least still competing in other forms of racing today.
I personally hate giving the label of “bust” to guys who’s careers get derailed due to injury and not just in racing but other sports like hockey or baseball. It’s not their fault that they got dealt a bad hand but I can understand why others would label them as busts
Tbf, he was a Vandoorne in F1-type bust; he barely had a chance (quite coincidentally, both with McLaren)

They killed Vandoorne's career (yes yes, might be his fault but considering Alonso, being as close as he was he's pretty good) almost ruining Kmag's career, and to an extent, Checo's as well.

Sat outside t1 at Portland his last year when his car died and he pulled to the side. He got out and sat by the fans watching the rest of the race. It was honestly one of the saddest things I've seen in race, he sat dejected and just watched the others like it was his last chance to watch a race.

One of the biggest shames in recent Indy history. He took time off for a concussion and made the right decision for his health, and lost his job for it. I haven’t been a fan of McLaren since honestly. Smh 🤦♂️

Interesting to note that he was replaced by Felix Rosenqvist, who has accounted for all of one podium in two seasons at Arrow McLaren.

But, what makes Oliver Askew different from Park?? He had a lot of potential, only to have a serious injury/injuries rip it away from him, similar to Park.

I'm not sure WTF happened with Carlos. He was second in the 500 and maybe in the Freedom 100 in the same weekend. I was expecting a championship from him. But with one win, he's in good company with Danics & Charlie Kimball.
He was promoted too early and I won't surprised if he gets a second chance at Indy.

Veach was bad but Milka Duno was her own level of bad.

@Kyle86910 Veach is more accomplished in his career. Veach has multiple Indy Lights wins...DeFrancesco never came close to winning anything in that series.
Plus Veach has a few top 5s in IndyCar. Id be shocked if DeFrancesco ever sniffed the top 5 in his career.

Indy and FE didn't pan out for him sadly. Hopefully he gives sports cars a crack. I'm sure one of the GTP or GTD Pro teams would love to have him.

Any number of athletes could not recover from a huge injury. Not that the injury itself robs them of their abilities, but their brain won't allow them to hold their foot to the floor, or stay in that pocket, or whatever risky thing that they must do.

Zac Brown offered a seat at McLarens indycar team to Danny Ric for the 2023 season but Dan was not interested in indycar he prefered the 22 million payout and went back to red bull

Crazy coincidence, I started watching this video yesterday and quit because I didn't agree that he was a bust. Last night ended up in an iRacing lobby with him. I got behind him while running at Sebring to see what he had and no bs he spun by himself in front of me after 1 lap (I spun 1 lap later). After that, I found myself in a lobby with Alex Palou at Jerez and I could not keep up lol. So I had to come back and finish watching this morning. Still don't agree but that was a crazy coincidence!

I don't think it is an "Indycar busts". In 2020, du to covid the season was harder for rookies, he had a bad accident in the 500 miles and at that tile his results was honorable for a rookie. Arrow McLaren is a hard team for pilot, the year before they have pull out Hinchcliff. Askew have some talent but you have to let him a chance to show it, for a rookie the first year is generally to learn and you have to show your pace the second year but nobody give this chance to Askew.
Even Andretti team, let to him only one year in formula E, he was the rookie of the year but replace for 2023 .... Hope he can find a seat in Indycar, IMSA LMDH or Wec.

Man’s a 3-time IndyCar winner (2022 Indy 500 champion) and was mathematically in the 2022 championship hunt
@IanPerez2000 Yes, but all of Ericsson’s Indycar wins has more or less been handed to him. Ericsson survived the demo derby in Nashville 21 and he got his first win because of midtakes done by Power. And the circumstances was about the same when Ericsson took his second win in Detroit 2021. And Ericsson would not have won the 500 last year if Dixon and/or Palou had stayed out of trouble, Ganassi had the fastest cars during the whole month, but it was either Dixon or Palou who were fastest during practice and qualifying, Dixon dominated the 500 until he got the speeding penalty, and he would almost certainly have won the race if it wasn’t for that incident. And Palou was well ahead of Ericsson until he had luck with his last pitstop at Indy. And in todays race Ericsson took the win because of the mishap between Grosjean and McLaughlin, and the fact that Pato ran into trouble right at the end of the race. In short, there’s always been more luck than skill involved when Ericsson wins a race.
And Ericsson was totally useless in F1, he was outperformed by all the teammates he had in F1 (Kobayashi, Lotterer, Nasr, Wehrlein and Leclerc).

A rare yet incredible L from Darian's part here. Askew was really screwed over in his one season in Indy, if Andretti were to give him a full-time ride I'm sure he'd cook. It simply hasn't been long enough to put a label on him yet
He drove for Andretti in FE last year and had 1 top 10. His teammate Jake Dennis finished 2nd in points.

And Charlie Kimball, while he won the same number of races as Danica, he seemed to be in the way more than he was near the front. Veach was a good wheel man in Indy Lights as well, seemingly always top five, but never could get near the front in Indycar.
you cannot say he is a bust. he should have never driven those races with a concussion. we will never know how much it is still effecting him.

Maybe too much stock was put into him winning Indy lights when there were only 13 drivers and only 8 did the entire season.
While he did unperform, I do have the theory that mclaren did not put much resource in their second car. Just the next year, a big talent like rosenqvist ended up outside the top 20, and with odd luck such as a stuck throttle that give him an injury.

His stats arent bad for a rookie.. Every day I don't like Mclaren more and more, after what they did to Danny Ric Mclaren was dead to me. Andreas Seidl even go the fuck out, Zak Brown ruined the team.. Hahah he flashes the F1 card to O ward (who needs to win a Indy championship first) and others which is actually pretty funny. Now their F1 team is really in serious trouble, good thing Danny Ric got out of there.

I can't agree with this one. Bust? He was actually doing fairly well as a rookie until he was injured. And had such a short chance I just don't see this as a bust. Unless there is some other reason he was dropped, I would put this on Mclaren not Askew.

Unfortunately he is a bust prior to his concussion from the 500. The pressure seemed too much for his greatness he had going for him had he just hung on. Him hiding his concussion is no joke I think it was justified showing he couldn't be trusted anymore as a driver in that series with a serious injury related to the brain.
