I have a Rayo lamp here in the UK, handed down by my parents. It was 'converted' to electric but luckily with it being centre draft all i had to do was remove the lamp holder that was pushed into the centre, luckily they also gave me the flame spreader. She only runs on oil nowadays.
Nice lamp I “inherited” a black and white moonstone nu type model b Aladdin and I still try to burn it regularly and because of recent events it will be my main source of light for my room
do you know anything about the P&A naugatuck lamp? it's just the magnet without the branding im trying to find more info on these lamps since i just got one.
My nan has the same lamp as the one with the big black shade, it belonged to her gransmother, the only difference is that the shade is white, not black.
I just picked one up, I'm a tubular lantern guy so I don't know much about the lamps. I fired it up and the chimney cracked. Didn't seem like the flame was too high but I'm not used to the center draft circular wicks. The flame wasn't perfectly even all around so maybe a high/hot spot?
Yes, hot spot and or wrong chimney. It might have had a flat wick chimney and they don’t produce much heat. I would start with a brand new wick and get a borosilicate chimney. They are easy to operate. Generally they with smoke if the wick is up to high, so just throttle it back till it burns clean and gives a nice flame. Cheers
I bought a rayo lamp with a ornate green tinted glass outer shade. first time I lit it the shade cracked in multiple places, the chimney did not and I didn't think I had it turned up too high. it was not flickering or smoking just a nice steady flame but very hot.is there a reason why this happened? I feel horrible because the shade is now cracked, its still usable but very fragile now. I dont think it was the original shade, this lamp seems to have pieces from multiple lamps actually because some are Nickle plated some brass but still I am sure this shade was old. what did I do wrong? I dont want to destroy anything else.
You did nothing wrong. The shade was not original to the lamp it sounds like. They would have come with a Case green [green outside, white inside) or a white shade with about a three to four inch center hole. I think that shade came off a electric lamp. Companies sold electric lamps that looked like kerosene lamps for years and those parts get married up alone the way. The Rayo lamp was sold for 50 years and parts interchange a fair bit. Cheers
@@Kerosenecanada well that is good to hear, and yes then it sounds like it is the wrong shade for sure then because this one is not at all like that, I did not much like this shade anyway its fanciness seems a bit contrived or at least inappropriate for the type of lamp it is, now I feel pretty comfortable just finding the correct shade for it and not worrying myself over this one. thanks for your reply!
Great question. Usually a few years. If you put a cap on the chimney top when not using , it can last even longer. I went to my condo in Florida in December after two years. The kerosene was still good. Cheers
Just got a Rayo Junior that was electric converted for 5 bucks, just took the lamp out of it and it had the wick and everything, I just need a chimney and flame spreader made up. Have any info on the Rayo Junior flame spreader?
Yes, if you google Rayo Junior flame spreader, you will find an image. It has holes all down the sides. The hard thing is to find a complete one, i see them missing the round washer piece often. They are more rare than the lamp as they get chucked out or lost when the lamp is electrified. I would just look on ebay from time to time or check on FB oil lamp groups. Cheers
@@Kerosenecanada I was thinking about milling one from scratch, obviously not original, but good enough to run as intended. Difficult without having one for getting the measurements though. On another note, I saw an old Aladdin model 12 with a glass font at they same store, but it's probably not worth it without the wick, chimney, or mantle, even if they only want 5 bucks for it. Could an Aladdin be run without a mantle and act like a smaller Rayo without damaging it?
@@Kerosenecanada Sounds Good, thanks! I also misspoke, the aladdin 12 was on a metal fount with a dent in it - I was thinking of another oil lamp I saw there until I looked back at the picture I took. The wick raising mechanism was also pretty tough, and I don't know for sure it was $5, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were by the store.

I did clean up before shooting the video. Lol

How long can you store lamp oil? What is the shelf life?
