Well I must be crazy I got six oil lamps, wood stove, 2k off grid solar 😂
So your also a medieval dude, hm I thought I was the only one 😂
You're definitely not crazy. Stay safe.
Your not alone after 2020 i got a woodstove too 😂
I've used oil lamps at night for many years, but just started lighting one in the morning - so peaceful. I never thought to add essential oils! I also read that you get more light from them if they are in front of a white wall, or better yet, placed in a corner at a safe distance. The light reflects. Putting them in front of a mirror helps too - that's why some old-fashioned candle holders have a metal or mirrored background. Thanks for a great video!
Or in front of a mirror.
Good to know,thank you.
Great idead
Be careful with oils if you have a cat or dog or bird. It can kill them.
I live in Puerto Rico and had a crash course in oil lamps when Hurricane Maria left us without power for 7 months. They are very useful and definitely good to have around the house. Thank you, Tessie for another nice video! God bless you all!
Muy Buenos Días 😊

Love the idea of going back and using oil lamps again!
My husband collects oil lamps. They make the home look and feel cozy
Tessie, now I know why my oil lamps smoked last time I used them. Thank you, sweet sister.
YOU HAVE A VERY BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT TESSIE ( please keep praying for my family member with the sudden illness, they think have a answer)

Thank you for updating We continue to pray

@@HomesteadTessie thank so much my sister in christ keep praying was put in icu last night.
I love oil lamps! They are very calming. I would like to add a safety tip although you supplied many. After you wash and dry the rag you used to clean the lamps it should be stored in a tin or glass jar with a metal lid to prevent spontaneous combustion. I know it doesn't happen often but it can. My dad taught me that all oily rags or cloth should be stored that way. I have a friend that had rags they didn't store in a tin and it did spontaneously combust. They were fortunate, because they were there at the time so there was no problem, but it could burn a persons house down easily. So get a cute tin or jar to keep it in.
My husband used to work in a restaurant in the kitchen. One day, I washed his clothes in the washing machine and then put them in the dryer and they started smoking in the dryer, almost set the house on fire.
Rocco Alex I am so glad it didn't burn the house down. Glad you caught it. Best to be careful with oily fabric.
I would love to fall asleep on a couch while Tessie reads me a book using one of those lamps.
I love oil lamps they remind of the 1800's. I use them a lot in the winter. Love you tessie
I grew up with oil lamps. We lived out in the country and had power outages often, and still do. I keep oil lamps ready to go all the time. My children know to be very careful around them. I can't use kerosene in them because it causes headaches and asthma flareups for me. I went to order some fuel to refill my lamps about a month ago and couldn't find any for less then $20/gallon!😲I couldn't believe it! I hope the price comes back down a little before I run out.
I still have at least one of my grandmother's lamps. It's nice to think of my mother and her bothers and sisters gathered around that lamp in the evenings with their school books while my grandmother sat in the corner sewing or reading her Bible to them.
The old folkscused to put bits of flannel and some salt in the coal oil lamps to keep them from exploding.I did homework by mine as a small child. Like i said ky. Is the last to get new things hee hee. Like electricity.in our icestorm hit our area a fewcyears ago we used them and heated with a karosene heater. Even heated coffee and soup on it.so glad you are showing people how to do this. Very important
I'm nostalgic by nature, and I just love the warmth and mood an oil lamp gives. It makes me want to read by its light and write letters or thoughts on paper.
Great job on this video.
I totally agree!
Tess, I have 4 oil lamps.. love them..have you ever noticed that when using the oil lamps, it's practically impossible to be stressed or upset. Nice perk, huh?
Claire, there is nothing like candlelight or light from an oil lamp.
In these stressful times we need that to decompress.
Hi Tessie! My hubby thought I was nuts in the beginning when I started using the oil lamps around the house, NOW...he LOVES THEM!
I have 2 oil lamps in the basement storage that were my folks. I remember having them when I was little, but I don’t remember them in use! I’m going to pull them out and try them! This was very informative! When I was school age, I always wanted to be a pioneer. I live in Nebraska, and have pioneer ancestors so maybe that’s why, and Laura Engels Wilder had a big influence on me. I actually washed my clothes by hand in the sink, and hung them outside a few times in grade school to see what it was like. Thank you, Tessie! I still yearn to live simply and I love your videos.
Ice storms a few years ago left me without power for 2weeks & these would have come in very handy!
❤love oil lamps!! The soft glow really has improved the atmosphere in my little home, thank you for introducing me to the oil lamp!
I love that mason jar oil lamp.
They sell a kit you can buy on lehmans ☺
So pretty and peaceful. I would love to see your lamps in front of a window while it's snowing out. Great safety and care tips too! We got a toatal of about 15" of snow with 2 storms. The snow covered trees are beautiful.
So beautiful and cozy. I know I wouldn't be without mine😍
I stopped using candles because of the soot, on my walls. After soo much painting, I bought a oil lamp. No soot, and my house is so warm and cozy. Didn’t know about putting essential oils. Definitely will do that. As always, I’m learning from you, every day. Love you sweetie❤️🙏🏻. Lv Dee
We have a few oil lamps. Here in Michigan we get harsh winters that knock our power out,so they have been a life saver. My grandma had a beautiful collection of them on top of all her kitchen cabinents. They remind me of her so much. We get ours at thrift stores and yard sales. Love them! :)
Good Evening Tessie, Sisters, Brothers, and Friends:)
Hello Owen
Good evening to you as well, Owen and everybody! God bless!

@@MsVeeTheVisionary Good evening Vee Anthony:)
I love my oil lamp. There is just a peaceful warm glow. I use them more now just because I live by myself but when the grandkids come they get put away. Safety first. Keep smiling sweetie xoxo
I have 2 oil lamps but had them just for emergencies. Now I will start lighting them at night and in the mornings, great idea!!! Thank you. So peaceful and satisfying!
Thank you for showing what the gallon of Kleen Heat looks like. This was a very calm peaceful video. I enjoyed spending time watching. I think my favorite lamp of yours is the one that looks like candlewicking on the base.
Good evening Patricia Ribaric this was so calming and peaceful love oil lamps and some day I may get one:) Have a blessed evening and night my friend :)
I love my oil lamps. So handy when we have a power outage.
Thank you for this great tutorial...! I can't wait to get myself an oil lamp.
I never thought about essential oils before, good tip. By the way, I've been using kero lamps, alladins and lanterns since before you were born, not that I'm old (lol), but of all the videos I've watched off and on you are the only one I have seen that properly trimmed wicks! Everyone else just cuts them straight which doesn't allow for as high/efficient of a flame. Good job, new subscriber here.
Love it , simplicity at its best!!!💚😀
I always use my oil lamps ♥️ I agree about everything you said!
I began using them long ago, because (don’t laugh), I always felt I was born in the wrong time period. I have a pioneer heart. So I started using them kind of to take me back on time. Now, I use them for the gentle glow and I actually love the way they smell. 😊
I live near Amish areas. There’s a shop that the Amish sell the most beautiful lamps. They sell big ones as well. Very beautiful. That’s how Amish light their homes, so I find them all over the place. Loved this Tessie ♥️
I think I was born in the wrong time too!! Lol I know I should just be thankful for modern conveniences... But I wish for long ago as well! ..... Had to be very strong then!
Great video. I love oil lamps. Thanks for the essential oil tip. I will try that. Have a blessed day Tessie!
I remember using these as a kid when the power would go out. They are a bit scary to me, but I use candles all the time and they're probably just as much of a fire hazard.
I have not burnt candles in years. I only use candle warmer for them.
I've been in two fires in my life, and thank God I survived them both. As much as I love the peaceful glow of candles and oil lamps, I could never use them. I have flame less candles now and I really enjoy them.
Tessie thank you for the hint on adding essential oils I didn’t know that. Going to try
Good evening Kristie Thompson, Have a blessed evening and night:)
I didn't know that either. What a great idea, better than artificial fragrance which I heard is toxic. 😨😱😵
Kristie Thompson don’t add essential oils if you have inside pets though. My friends dog suddenly got very ill and vet could not figure out what was wrong. After many trips to specialists, they figured out it was from long exposure to breathing essential oils in the home. The dog ended up dying because he had severe internal damage. She was devastated knowing her oils caused his death. She was only putting these oils in her steamy bath water. The problem her dog loved to sit at the bathroom door to be with her as she soaked in the tub.
Chris Wooten thank you I won’t
@@muellermetal Mindy, what Tessie added was not a reall essential oil. She misspoke. There is not essence of any plant called "Sugar Cookie." That's an artificial fragrance oil.
Thanks for answering my questions Tessie, your a charm! Your Canadian girlfriend
Our family used coal oil lamps and naptha gas lamps unitl 1974, that's when we moved to town. We didn't call it 'off grid' back then, to us it was the bush. There were many fires and people died from a lack of respect for fire or knowledge about flammable substances. I can still recall the sound of the glow from those Coleman gas lamps.
Now when the Hurricanes blow here I will know how to Light my oil lamps!!!! Thank you!!!
This will be my New Year's resolution: oil lamps
Thank you Tessie!!! You are precious!!!
Thanks tessikins I knew you fill it and lite it but I knew nothing else about a year ago after some of your videos I bought 2 of them and some oil haven't used them yet again thank you your such a sweetheart HI OWEN hope all is well
Good Morning T shet, so good to see you I've missed you here:) I am well been so busy with house work having a new kitchen floor put in on Thursday. Also had a bathroom leak I had to deal with yesterday all fixed now:) Have a wonderful day my friend:)
My mom collected oil lamps throughout the years. When she passed away I got the majority of her collection. We have added more every time I go to antique shops. We love them...we’ve used them my whole life during storms. Glad I stumbled across your video...in Texas and currently making it through the snow storms and power outages. I forgot how comforting these are!
Prayers for everyone in your area !! Sarah so many are impacted !
Thanks for the information, I’m going to look for lamps right away. I love the glow and the heat is a bonus. 😊🌺
Tessie thank you for showing how to properly use and care for oil lamps this is something every one should be thinking about myself included. I would love to have just one oil lamp they really do add so much warmth and coziness:)
Go to Walmart my brother they do have the lamp and the kleenex oil too. 😊

Great video sweety 💕 I was wondering if you had a video on your hair care? You have beautiful thick hair 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
thank you ! No I don't ! maybe I should :) I use nothing fancy !!
I, too, love oil lamps. I love their look so much that I have an electric lamp that looks like a white oil lamp. It sits on my desk and I do use it instead of the over head light. I do have many oil lamps, wicks, candles, and wax for when the power goes out or is just too expensive to use. This tutorial was very helpful to me. Merry Christmas, Tessie and friends.
I have at least 8 , absolutely love them, I had no clue it was safe to put essential oils in! When you showed your first two, it was so calming ! And I began to pray for our world. Ty so much! I hope ones know the richest of all have the most simplest lives, pray we teach our kids and grandkids this richness. You can feel it in your heart, mind, and knowing you pass it on, especially in today’s world. Much love, thank you Tess, you’re so incredible.

Thank you for this informative video. I wanted to get oil lamps around my house but was afraid because I know nothing about them. My Granny had them all around her house and seeing one now, takes me back to her house sitting in front of her wood burning stove. Such warmth and peace.
My husband and I have quite a few oil lamps and even two big bottles of lamp oil and a bunch of wicks but we’ve never really used them , just displayed them in our home ! I do like knowing that We have them for emergencies. I’ve never had to use them as candles have always been enough but after watching your video I’m very interested in using them on occasion because it looks very warm and inviting. I’m very intrigued also by the oil that heats the house and I’m gonna look for some of that. I can’t wait to show my husband this video he loves oil lamps and he’ll find this very interesting!
Thank you Tessie for another really fun and very informative video!🙂💗
It makes me think of my great-grandmother she was a wonderful lady city of the old-fashioned way she read her Bible Vine or lamp and her big stone fireplace that I remember her whale outside in her backyard where do you would get wonderful cool water it tasted soap cure her feather mattress when you jumped into bed it would cradle you people forget all these wonderful things I'm so glad they're touched gently in my heart my wonderful great grandmother she's an angel now and she's happy
Loved the Oil Lamp video! I have two oil lamps that belonged to my grandparents. My husband and I love the peaceful feeling it gives us when we use them.
Your explanation of oil lamps is wonderful. Excellent video
I love oil lamps so much, when I was a young girl I used my Grandma's old oil lamp at night to read in my room, I still have that old lamp
These sure would. Look pretty by my Christmas tree❤️
Oh my goodness, thank you for sharing this video and about the Klean Heat oil. I once collected oil lamps and only held on to one. I will find it tomorrow and use it. They are beautiful and also add love to a home!
Hi Tessie, you inspired me to give oil lamps a try! While me and my grandma and I were cleaning her antique collection above her kitchen cabinets, she gave me one of her mom’s old oil lamps ( my great grandma’s), and it looks exactly like the one in the first part of your video only the top globe is just a plain one. I bought Klean Heat at Home Depot today, just tried it out, and the lamp works awesome! Can’t believe how bright they actually are, especially if the light bounces off mirrors like in the bathroom. Gonna try to find a smaller one for my camper and a few more for my future home!
I am so glad you did this ! and it is so peaceful too !!!
Theres something about fire in the home that changes the atmosphere completly. When my husband and i make our forever home were going to have a smaller one with a fire place we discussed that it takes no less time cooking over a fire place than it does a gas stove. Plus the fire place is heating the home. We want to go as off grid as we can and that means either oil lamps or candles as lighting. Were going to be homesteading with a group of friends and put the property in a trust. Were super excited about it. Just because its old doesny mean its not usable and worthless.
I have quite a few of those very ones you have our town had elec go out one nite and I set several together on the table as we still had homework going on when Kids were little plus they would get scared but using the oil lamps made it an event.....we would have cars go around to see what side of town was out but the whole town was we had people slow down in front of our house wondering why we had lights on ha too funny I just mentioned I have two canning jar lamps like you showed I told them the kit is at lehmans to covert the canning jar to lamp of course if you live by an Amish community the hardware store there will carry them too
Thank you ❤
God bless you 💞
A great informative video. I have been looking at some battery operated night lights. As my Dog would knock over an oil lamp. When I was a young Cub Scout, I had the miss fortune to see an oil lamp explode, and in doing so, it caught an Adult Scouter on fire as they were sitting next to a camp fire. It was very scary to witness. His legs were badly burnt.
Sad memories, you can make new ones buy thinking positive the something like that never happened again.
@@poloniarosacarrasquillo1496 Yes, I have now been able to put the memory of that incident, to the back of my mind. Thanks Rosa, for helpful advice :)
@@SensaiMan ,you are so welcome, you now we can get advice from you too. We learn from each other my friend 😊

Good Morning SensaiMan, I have many battery light around the led switch lights are fabulous they are so bright and you can mount them anywhere it also doubles as a flashlight:)
Wow sad memories you have to be real careful when using oil lamps outside as well as inside. I've head the temp change from hot to cold can make the globe explode. Have a great day my friend:)
Also, as with any wick, as the fluid burns and the fluid level goes down, the flame will as well. So keep the lamps above half full. I always look for lamps with a squat resivoir.
Tessie....
I truly cannot describe in words how much joyous I felt after stumbling upon your video.....
All this while I used to nurture this "illusion" that I am the odd one who loves the soothing... blissful glow of a flickering flame🔥🔥🔥🔥 .....Than the disturbing unpleasant light of bulbs and LED s.....My mum calls me an old soul and during winter nights I light a beautiful vintage oil lamp in my room and drift into a state of blissful sleep....And during the warmer months I watch videos about the beauty of old school lighting...That annihilates my stress...
There is nothing more blissful to light an oil lamp and glance at it.... Striving to forget the stress of this chaotic world.....
You are such an amazing human being and I truly adore your beautiful cozy blissful home.....
I gladly subscribed....

Owen, hello. For awhile, I enjoyed walking through antique stores, mostly just looking. They had consignment sections and it was like walking through a museum. That’s where i bought my oil lamps. I hope you have a nice evening, Owen.
I recently got one for two dollars at a flea market.
Brand new never used.
This makes me want to get my oil lamps back out. Great video Tessie.
Morning . 🌻 Peggy here . Used to love our lamps. Should pull them out again.
I barely remember that my mother used to use oil lamps when I was a kid and I happened to find a couple lamps in working condition at an old antique store, ordered a roll of wick and picked up some fuel, and got both lamps working. Looks great

Thank you Tessie! My husband inherited an oil lamp that was his grandfathers from the 1920's and we just recently won a beautiful one in a horse rescue auction. This was really helpful in teaching me the basics of what I need to know so that we can enjoy these beautiful gifts.
Hi baby girl, I love oil lamps. What a great idea. Your such a lovely lady. Thanks for showing us.
When you pour out of a gallon container always pour it out by tipping the container to one side or the other to avoid "Glugging" spillage, pouring it straight out the front will create a spillage, more so when the containers full.
WOW, What a Great Idea!! Thank you !!

I guess I'm a bit old fashioned too! I have 6 oil lamps. My special one is the one my grandmother gave me as a wedding present. No matter where I've lived that lamp has been on my supper table. When I go to thrifty stores, I buy a globe or lamp shade. That's my thrifty finds!
Thanks about the fuel tip, Klein heat I'll look for it. Side note if someone, elderly, young children, pets can have problems with essential oils being burned. They kick up my asthma. Peace.
Hi Tessie, my power goes out a lot in winter so this video is really helpful for me. I didn’t know how to use them before and I found 2 in an old shed on my property so I’ll get them going.
What a really nice video Tessie. I have a small collection of antique oil lamps, and love them. Found one here and there over the years. Your home looks very homey and cozy with the lamps. Thanks.

I started using my grandmas oil lamps two years ago. She had passed away and I was fortunate to be able to have them. She was like my mother and it brings back great memories of her everytime I see them and light them. I know have gotten quite a few more threw thrifting. I love the nostalgic cozy feel of them and also depend on them to save a little on electric. Thank you so much for this video on how to maintain and use them. Now I know to trim the corners to keep it cleaner and from smoking. God Bless you and your continuing faithfulness here on youtube.
Morning Katrina !!!
Excellent job Tessie i still use them when power goes off and as a very young lad they was very common as main lighting still. I have one very very old one that belonged to my grandmother. Unfortunately the original globe was broken but the rest of it is still in great shape. I expect its well over 100 years old.
We’re having rolling planned outages as a preventive measure here in California. The last time our electricity was out for 15 hours! So I do need them.
This is an amazing video! Thank you for sharing this information on oil lamps with us. We had one to use due power outages/winter storms when I was a child. Parents were quite clear on being very careful around it.
I love using candles, especially in fall & winter to bring a cozy atmosphere to my home. May have to look into getting an oil lamp though. You're such a wonderful teacher!
Thank you tessie ,I've had a old oil lamp for many years, I'll definitely get some lamp oil and give it a try x
