He was, but the point Rio and co. make here is that heading into the Euros, there was real speculation as to whether Trent would make the squad or not. If reports are to be believed, he was a late addition after a last minute change of heart by Southgate. So was already clear then that he was 4th choice for Southgate and not much has changed since.

I am a Brazil fan and for the first time ever Eng’s full backs especially RBs are better than ours. Unless Dani Alves at 39 turns the clock back any of Trent, Reece, Walker & Trippier all are better than Danilo. We may however decide to go for Militao at RB which is of course not his natural position. On the LB side Shaw/Chilwell and Sandro/Tellas are all comparable I would say.

The issue is that liverpools midfield compensates for Trents terrible defending and covers for him, whereas englands does not
A goal against Rangers does not change the fact he's having a bad start to the season. I'd still take him though. I think he and actually Trippier are capable of playing as an 8. I'd take 4 right backs (including Walker), 2 left backs, and 5 centre backs (Stones, White-cdm cover, Tomori, Dier, Chalobah-cdm cover). Mids = Rice, Bells, Mads, Mount, Grealish, Foden, Saka, Sterling, Sancho. Strikers = Kane, Toney, Abraham.
Plus the 3 goalies, that's my 26.

It’s amazing that compared to recent years we have so many great players at Englands disposal. Just hope this continues. Yes I would love TAA to be in the squad as a Liverpool fan and Trent fan. But ultimately I just want England to win. Just hope TA doesn’t lose hi is confidence to affect his club career.

For all the great players that England have had over the years, they fail to produce a truly creative player. None of the top teams in the league have had an englishman fulfil that duty for over 20 years, with the exception of Paul Scholes.

Defending wise, yeah he has his flaws, but a manager who has won lots of trophies with Trent as his fullback trusts him, so why does a manager who has won nothing think he knows best. He's too much of a risk defensively to play right back and James plays the wing back role more effectively than him. The only way I'd put him in the side would be as a deep lying playmaker alongside Rice, with Bellingham bombing on. But he's never played there for England so it's not gonna happen at the world cup
Since trippier made his debut in PL. James has a goal involvement every 170mins, Tripper every 350mins and Trent every 457mins. Add the fact he's made loads of errors, looks shaky at the back, has never played well for England and is by far the worst defender of the 3, its not really a surprise, he's not picked.
The fact he's played so badly defensively has taken away from the fact his attacking numbers have slowed rapidly.

As I’ve stated times before it needs to be James and Trent occupying the right while Grealish and Foden link up left and centre, all 4 swapping roles with their partner periodically. Would confuse defences and create more space. Pope, Trippier, Tomori, Stones, James, Trent, Bellingham/Mount, Foden, the Greal deal, Kane and Toney. Southgate’s got zero balls.
Even having him on the bench means that opposing teams need to prepare for him, defenders and keepers would be analysing his freekicks and crosses etc which would arguably prevent them preparing something else as much as they would have. Even if he doesn't play he'd have an impact on the other team
Trent's spot is surely locked down. Even if he doesn't start, off the bench he is probably the best chance of creating a goal. If they play 3 at the back with wing backs, there's no one better suited to a wing back role with defensive cover

Trent is an amazing player, but I understand Southgate not playing him in 4-4-2. In a 3-4-3, I don't understand it. It is true that he is against some of the best right defenders in the entire world - Reece James and Kyle Walker - but the England squad needs some creativity to unlock those big teams' defenses, so Trent needs at the very least to be part of the 26 players going to Qatar.

No team has won the world cup with a back 3 since Brazil in 2002 (and even then they had Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo up top, Cafu and Roberto Carlos at wing-back.) Play a 4-back, and play Trent next to Bellingham/Maddison, Rice slightly deeper in a 4-3-3. They say he's De Bruyne at RB, so why not play him where De Bruyne plays? Then all this talk of him being unable to defend isn't an issue. He's a central midfielder, sooner he realizes the better.

Whilst I do not think Southgate is fit to manage such an array of English talent and will not win a tournament, I agree with the decision to exclude Trent. He fulfills an exact role at Liverpool. It is a completely different ask for England and there are others better than him in that position.
Trent should be in the squad no debate. The lack of Southgate’s technical coaching ability is the reason why this is even a debate.

Should go and give an impact via the bench. No way should he start, too much of a liability. But to not have him in the squad would be a strange decision.
England is already hopeless in this WC knowing Southgate is going to be their manager. Remember, Southgate is the kind of manager who is stubborn enough to still consider Harry Maguire as the first name on his team sheet. Trent not going to this WC only means he is spared from being a part of the England WC failure. Any hope of the England team doing anything or winning anything will be at least after this WC, after Southgate gets sacked.

James, Tripier and Walker are similar going forward, but they are a million miles better than Trent defending. At international level Trent's poor defending would be even more exposed than it is at Liverpool.

No matter what trent does he won't start for England from 2018 till the end of last season he's been literally the best rb in the world and Gareth wasn't picking him then so he sure as hell won't pick him when he's playing poorly.... its a joke and makes a mockery out of the idea that Gareth himself has said many times about picking players in form. It ain't just trent look at maddison and tomori aswell. To summarise trent could play 50 flawless games in a any season but Southgate still wouldn't pick him.

Walker was England's Player of the Euro's (and Mourinho's), then there's Reece James.... So why not push Trent into a different position. What can't he do in midfield? He's can pass as well as Phillips, he might not be the strongest defender but he's a better defender than say, Mount and Foden, so surely, he's a more defensive option in midfield, and given that Phillips is often injured, it has to be worth a try.
Southgate loves to put our better players on the bench to bring them on in the second half so why doesnt he do that with Trent. Seems like a shrewd move. I remember Hazard being benched for Chelsea’s FA cup semi final years ago and he came on and won the game. Trent not who Gareth wants in his system? Fine! But bring him as a game changer please!
