    While visiting Grant Imahara's shop, Adam Savage sees Grant's screen (and functionally) accurate BB-8 replica, which he built with prop artisan Lauren Markland after seeing the character roll out on stage during 2015's Star Wars Celebration. Fon Davis and Lauren take Adam through this stunning 3D-printed replica, a testament to Grant's passion and talent.

      I run a small makers' space in the UK. It's tiny at the moment but it's growing with some rapidity, thankfully. However, I'm a bit jealous of the US in only one ridiculously shallow aspect: your maker ladies (I've been to a few conventions in the US, brilliant and very inspiring they were) are mostly very pretty. I'm not just basing my claim on the Mythbusters ladies and this girl here, but from the cons too. All our maker ladies, as lovely as they are (personality counts for MUCH more than looks, I'm just very weak and shallow 😀) are pigs and hounds in comparison, aesthetically speaking. Just an observation from a washed up old welder that occasionally thinks himself mildly artistic.. :) :)

      @ToreDL87 Před 2 lety

      Yeah I googled it and 10 seconds in I found working BB-8 projects with this specific system came out already in 2015 (James Bruton) and perhaps even earlier.
      But any of those that knew Grant only ever saw him work on it solo or were unaware of the full picture, it's unreasonable to expect everybody to instantly know everything :)
      Nobody is denying that it was a decade (or so) long process worth of absolutely collaborative inter-group effort, but that's not what this video is about :)

  • @KnightsWithoutATable
    @KnightsWithoutATable Před 2 lety

    Another amazing build of BB-8 was done by James Bruton here on CZcams. He went much more computer controlled on the movement and made a design that could rotate in place using a mass reaction wheel. Forward and reverse were achieved by shifting the mass of the batteries and having the frame on casters inside the frame. What is interesting is that the solution to holding the head on that he developed looks a lot like the one here in Grant's replica. They also both made use of basic 3d printing to build the body in very similar ways.
    James has moved away from replica move costumes and robots to developing a walking, quadrupedal robot that is remote controlled, 3d printed, and runs on Arduino controllers, so his channel is more building robots cheaply and creating an Open Source robot design for hobbyists, low cost research, and education. One of the coolest walking robots he made was a Gonk droid replica, but with open panels so you could see the mechanics inside it as it walked.

    The BB-8 on stage was actually _not_ in The Force Awakens. They used different robots and puppets with additional wheels and/or booms that were digitally removed.
    The robot designers constructed the free-moving stage robot after principal filming ... to scratch an itch. They talked about it at CE3 in London: czcams.com/video/RzzWmTIVv3c/video.html
    There they also disclosed for the first time how the free-moving robot worked. The hobbyist/CZcamsr James Bruton had already cracked it (after three prototypes ... and he was sitting front and centre during the talk :) ). I think the BB-8 builder's club got going after that.

    I almost don't want you guys to stop exploring grants shop. but I am sure there will be a point you will run out of things to talk about. It's bittersweet

    Amazing. I like the design of BB-8. Yet the most inspiring droid for me is D-O. Good to see this video. As I've designed a different style of droids. Have started the mold just waiting for in the new year to order some filament to make it and maybe them. They are roughly based off of fundamental engineering principles, tools, and oddly enough two look like a stylized form of rabbit and the last version looks different(yet still my favorite design, even though I'm not building that one first). The droids even though they look different would all be models that can serve the same functions and purpose. They are basic, yet, then as an item would be more interactive than most other droid toys. Different games could be played with them. Added feature is they would be easier to pick up as compared to other droids and they could pick up items. A new hope would be if they put on a droid contest again.
