My favorite episodes are when you do an upgrade to your shop. If we got an entire series on you moving to another shop and reorganizing, that would, in my opinion, be the best content you could make.

@Milehighsnake98 bit of a privacy nightmare though. Really can't give away his location for multiple reasons, his own safety, his staff's safety.
When he moves they need to get months in front with content and then move in the meantime, then the nutters can't put the jigsaw together.

I think one of the other concerns is determining what you actually need. Space tends to get filled up. I purposely cut my shop in half in order to force myself to make choices about what I actually use versus what I collect and park as a dedicated dust collection surface. These are not trivial concerns. I just picked up a MIG welder and I had to think seriously about what I needed versus what I wanted based upon space, not dollars available. It’s a good discussion, Adam.
I just got my first workshop that isn't at home, and I am super freaking excited to get it working for me. Also super freaked out! 👍

The interesting part will be the lesson learnt and how things are done differently, with storage etc.. Presumably, a new place would be larger, so could be subdivided for dedicated spaces??

Adam talking about the marble dust reminds me of weeks trying to remove the orange metal oxide powder from the RCA factory room Cyberia makers pace moved into in 2011. They used to make magnetic tape in that section of the factory.
As a visual artist workspace is essential. For first 10 years I had shared spaces. They were great for getting into being so called professional and sharing the enthusiasm. Just after getting my own rented studio I realised how the workshop is part of what comes out of the other end. I love installing new tools and learning how to use them. Adam has been great example that you can do anything if you put enough efford to it. Keep up the good work. Take care of your tools.
As an architect it would be a dream project to work with such an enthusiastic and passionate maker as Adam to design a custom cave. Having designed myself a garden studio for model making and housing a model railway it's really rewarding to design spaces for creating.
I’ve found moving out of and back into your own space is a great way to get organized and reorganized for current and future updates
And every time Adam suggests a tool purchase on eBay, the prices jump thru the roof overnight…

I like the point you make about the tools & supplies you take when traveling are dependent on the project. I have had that experience with pottery - when I go to take classes, it's really handy to have a subset of tools to take with me. I was able to refine mine to the point where it fits into a Nomadic PE-07 pen case, as long as I take a compressed sponge. I'd definitely use your method, though, if I was working in a bunch of mediums.
As a New Yorker, I'd LOVE to hear your Canal Plastic/Rubber tales. The center of NYC making.
I've loved your cave since the first upload I found. Even though my thing is Theoretical Cabinetmaking (not even a carport to work in), that cave is wonderous.
If you do move, I hope you set up a couple of time lapse cameras and capture the whole process, just chuck a voice over on it later, if you're of a mind.
I TOTALLY agree on having a dedicated studio space. Especially if you do professional jobs. I too worked at home for several years before getting a studio space. Having a off site studio space gives you that "professional" feeling.
I love that almost-car in the foreground. My sister is an artist, and she's always had studios. It was important for her artistic "liberation".

You know, you could take credit for all of it, you could say you found the space, you had the hidden knowledge to see that place for it could be. But no, you gave credit to your wife and assistant and im sure many other people. That's good leadership, knowing that you don't know everything and that other people can be useful and helpful. Love it, antithetical to most all living generations
You mentioned building up floor 18-22 inches.. were you able to utilize some of that space below, such as for running electrical or other utilities? Access between various points?
I got to meet Adam Savage once at mega time it was probably the best moment of my life because within the 60 seconds that I got to talk to him I realized that he was just like me except way more awesome lol And like 40 more years of experience
Oh man the dust problem is relatable. My boyfriend and I moved our shop into a new building about 6 years ago. The space was a large contract vacuum repair shop before we moved in. We had everything power washed and still will find little mountains of vacuum cleaner dust lurking in corners and cracks.
seems to me the two most important things to getting a shop space is power delivery and ability to add ventilation for any process that might need it. Some processes require the ability to vent outside due to fumes, And of course you want a building that can handle your expected power demands.
Question: Did you consider earthquakes when you did the setup of your shop?
Unlikely. The entire area is a hot seismic zone

I never knew I needed a shop . Now I do.
You mentioned not bringing a soldering iron... I was wondering if you've seen the TS100 portable iron? I have one in my kit and it's come in handy many times. The best part is that it can be powered via USB or a lipo battery, so you don't need to drag a lot of other stuff along... perfect for reattaching a wire to a circuit board, or fixing an xt30 connector... and it gets hot enough to do bigger connectors (like XT60's)... and it's not much larger than a mechanical pencil.
By the time I finished setting up my first on-set toolbox it was so heavy I felt like I was carrying around a set of barbells. My suggestion would be to make one that's modular, so you can break it down in your production van and just grab the unit that you need, and leave the rest. Of course, if you have the luxury of a big art department, you could probably go minimal like Adam suggested, and share tools when needed.
Keeping mobile kits more specific to the job is essential to keeping scale to a sane level. Building out your mobile kit on the fly from your available shop tools is advantageous, but you also need to get an inventory of tools worked up for it to keep track of things. Composite Tool Kits are king, but usually lose a bit in the adaptability.
It's a balance to find for sure.
I was tasked with cleaning the gypsum out of a locomotive that had lived its life hauling and around gypsum dust. Took me several weeks. Some layers were over 2 inches deep.
You should have used a stick of dynamite like the cement truck myth ;)
Having a separated area for working is such a big deal. A lot of the time if I'm in the house I can find any reason not to go outside and start working (I make and customize lightsabers) but as soon as I'm out there I can't not fiddle with something which always leads to working. Having a place to get your mindset right is so important.
Also listening to these and the one day builds helps get me in that maker mindset.
My first shop was a loan from my aunt, which i used to buy the house next to me. Paid her in full + extra for her troubles in 4 years. Funny thing is, by the time i finished paying, i was already ready to move out to the next place, wound up selling both houses.
What do you use your shop for?
Adam, I have always have had a house that has had a workshop/maker space. I even had a custom made bench in the shop. I moved to a new house back in 2013 and downsized. I am trying to get my shop back as well as storage. The only space is my garage but I have to come up with an idea for storage shelving/tracking. Tool storage and a work area. it is a single car garage. Can you make any recommendations. I am a generalist maker, wood and leather work. Looking at some furniture refinishing soon.
Only people who’ve lived in the mission will understand that comment about parking. I chuckled.
Funny thing is my shop was my biggest maker project to date. Built it myself in my backyard from slab to framing to wiring expensive but worth it
I have a tiny version of that tool at 9:00min, it’s a surgical tool normally used for inserting tubes in kids ears - myringotomy forceps. super useful for fine reaching/grabbing. And I just love saying it’s name!
I know you said it fills with anxiety but thinking about the videos that would come of you moving shop fills me with glee. I'm not saying move, just that if you did I think if would be amazing to watch.
Getting back to the shop. It may seem like no biggie, but my recently acquired shop has a drain in the middle with a sloped floor to direct water to the drain. OMFG the issues it causes with cabinets, table saw, work benches......etc. Everything wobbles a bit. I need to shim everything, what a PITA.
That multi-color area rug that he has over by his podcast table, is super cool. I would love to find one to put in my place..
This is a piece of leather and the colors are just from typical work bench use.

My maker space that I lease out is 9' wide X 16' long by 20' tall. I was able to built a lofted area with a staircase that I use for hanging things from and old peanut butter jars from under the stair slats filled with this and that. I stumbled into this space because I was managing a workshop in the building at the time and this space was sitting empty being used as storage. Talking to the right people I was able to lease it out. It was not even on the building manifest as a leasable space. Sometimes you just have to ask the right people the right questions to find a space that is right for you.
I’ve done the triage kit for my plastic models and R/C cars. I have a littler tub that I can fit side cutters, cement, hobby knife, sanding sticks, hand drill and small bits and even a pair of lexan scissor in for model work away from home. I also have a small toolbox specifically for the R/C stuff like tools, nuts, wheel pins, body clips, zip ties, hobby knife, etc, and just in case I’m away from the car that toolbox is in, I also carry the box cutter I bought 18 years ago on me in case so cave to cut string, fishing line, plastic mesh, or even vines from around the wheels of my crawler and trail trucks, since those are always getting tangled up in other people’s garbage. I should bring garbage bags for trash I find doing that, Tread Lightly style, since I’ve picked up garbage and taken it to cans in the park or home to throw out when I’m done.

Adam, I'm a woodworker that has outgrown my garage. I have the space to build a shop on my property but I'm wondering if I should consider renting industrial space instead. I would really appreciate your thoughts.
Great answers I think the same way only I fly RC airplanes and I do have a kit because well we’re mobile but you bring what you think is needed and you always miss something

If you move out of that office, that is going to be one insane move. Definitely will need to make the new space move in ready so there is no boxes sitting for a long time.

I have going to get a 3d printer. I have seen video"s on 3d print job's. they said to get a hot gun for the cobwebbing on the print job's. Would a hairdryer work gest as will?
Seems like the space under the floor could be used for something. Compressor and air lines, dust collector and ductwork.
I am pretty sure the move (if/when it happens) will be more of an epic adventure than all the lord of the ring movies combined!
I think the key thing is that it's almost always better to separate your work space from your living space, if this is important. I know during the Covid19 lock down it got really bad working at home because I never went anywhere. That got depressing. So now if at all possible work is separate from home.
As someone brought to my attention, this is definitely a personal thing, and I do agree with that. I know everyone is different when it comes to working from home.
This is likely a very personal decision. I am headed back to the office next month and would prefer to keep working from home.
@@jeffreypowell7374 you are 100% correct. I agree that it's a personal choice, as everyone is different. Honestly I loved working from home at first. I just kind of grew out of it. But, I know that's not the same for everyone.

Wondering what made you decide against moving now that it’s two years later. Don’t know if it’s come up in subsequent videos.
I may have the chance to actually build a workshop of a few hundred square feet, what should i consider? Any tips?
One thing I will say is make it as tall as possible. The gambrel style roof allows a ton of vertical space. If you can get away with it build one that is 2 stories tall. They sell kits for them at Lowes and home Depot. Having really tall shelves for storing seldom used items has been very helpful for me since I have tools that I do need from time to time but not every day. This will help free up horizontal space for work benches

All I can say, Adam, is if you DO move the cave, PLEASE do not deprive us of moving VLogs. Often, your insights on things have made me reconsider the way I handle things. Admittedly, there are also things you do that have no bearing on my making and my gut instincts serve me better... Also something I know you endorse. But all that said, we have never seen through Tested or your TV career a case where you need to undertake a moving project like The Cave, and if we can pick up some valuable tidbits along the way, I'm sure we'd all be most appreciative!!
One day build - ComicCon triage pack out kit. Or One day build - House hold tool kit? Expand on the first order of Retriveability stuff with travel tool box build outs....? What tool do you think belong in the shop, house, car, travel?

One critical factor to consider in a potential shop location is: available power. Do your homework, and know what your potential needs are. Don't be afraid to pay a little more to get more electrical capacity. Trying to add it later is expensive and often miserable.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with people breaking into your car(s). We in the Florida Keys have had these problems as well and we all work on boats so we can't babysit the parking areas. Here is how most of us solved the problem: take everything of value out of the vehicle and leave the windows down. I know, that sounds weird. But, it works. The window is down so there is no reason to break it and there is nothing of value in the car so there is nothing to steal. People could steal the car, but at least for us the traffic is so bad they won't get anywhere fast and all the police have to do is blockade the bridge and they're not leaving the island.
It looks like it would be a major undertaking to move your shop to a new location Adam.
When I watch EVERY video that you make...I ALWAYS wonder if you ever consider moving your family AND your shop to an area that you can have a LOT of space. A place like April Wilkerson bought and is making enormous workspaces so she can do about anything she wants. Wranglestar is another CZcams star that has all the space in the world...and not be restricted by the megalopolis of San Francisco?

San francisco is so expensive, I imagine adam could find much more space if he didn't limit himself to SF... however I'm also positive he would still fill the space to capacity almost immediately... XD
Triage is sorting things into three categories. For example on MASH they would sort the incoming wounded into those that could wait, those that would survive with immediate care, and those that were beyond help. To grab another phrase from MASH, I think Adam is referring to "meatball surgery" where they would patch up and stabilize patients to get them to a recovery hospital somewhere safer.
Good old San Fran, where living good is having your vehicles vandalized at best and wishing that it won't be worse.
for a Portable Soldering Iron... get a battery powered Hako FX-901.... its fast and it works.... the brand is great, the price is low.... no cord is get in the way... its my goto, and have many Irons.

The thought of packing alllll of that up. Moving it. And organizing it as you go is a horrible thought
the biggest barrier for me is cost. I simply cannot get over the idea of spending as much or more than my mortgage per month on a workspace. If it were my main source of income, I could probably justify it. Maybe. The reality is that in this corner of the country it takes "TV Money" to pay for a workspace that suits me.
That is basically where I am at. I considered renting a space to use as a shop but it would cost more than an apartment so I instead need to buy a house with a decent garage or the space to build one.
@@nubreed13 Im pretty much in that latter spot. I have a house. I have a space. I have a crusty, ad-hoc built, very old shop. SO much so that not long ago I took bids to have it demolished and replaced - just replacing the structure with a plain box, the exact same dimensions, without any amenities like doors, siding, insulation, electricity, etc was going to cost more than I owe on the entire property. My point is this: Once you account for the costs of home "ownership" - mortgage, upkeep (cash and your time) of your own home plus the cost of renovating or building a workspace, you might find the cost is a wash or tips in favor of renting a space. Unless you move to the middle of nowhere and find a cheap space...

I dunno the shop is a character in its own right. I think it would be tough to replace.
This is the second time you've said you might get a new space. And your doing it because of local crime. I was talking with my apartment manager a while back and and they were saying that no place any less crime resistant than any other place - at least for living. They have to deal with that question a lot with applicants to this building. So I am wondering how would you dodge the problem with a work space move???
Does anyone wish they would show the photo they use for the thumbnail in the actual video? So many times I just want to look at the photo closer or in better context.
