- I recently picked up the Fuji 23mm f2 lens (35mm full frame equivalent) and I finally found some time to take it out for a spin in Birmingham, the UK's second biggest city.
It's going to take a lot of practice to get used to and changing my way of seeing but I can't wait to see how my street photography evolves over time with it. Hope you enjoy - let me know what you think of the pics in the comments!

Hello Tim I enjoyed watching your video again I use a 35mm 1:4 prime lens. Manual M Lens I am looking to get a 28mm M Lens manual as the lenses for My camera are very expensive at the moment. I love the abstract mirrors and strong colours you use in your photography. Also the great light I am myself looking for the same thing in the street but mirrors are difficult to come by on the streets in Liverpool and Wirral. Thanks for sharing Tim.

I was in town myself for around 3 days this week taking photographs in China Town and Digbeth mostly, I'm surprised that we never ran across one another! It is very interesting watching you work though as a lot of your pictures remind me of the methods of a Saul Leiter or Cartier-Bresson in the way that you seemingly focus more on the abstract side of Street Photography and try to blend yourself into the background so as to act invisible to your subjects.
It is interesting because I find myself drawn to the complete opposite style in many ways. I am more of a Gary Winogrand or Bruce Gilden type in that I prefer to confront people head on with the camera and capture the moment as if I am inside of it myself. I prefer the term "up-front" photography myself as opposed to "confrontational" though, it makes it sound as if it is an unfriendly method which I don't believe it to be, especially if you Winogrand your way through the heavier situations.
Anyway that's enough of a tangent from me for now! I just wanted to express that I am really enjoying this channels content and that you are giving me plenty of ideas for composition methods!
I live in Cheltenham so I’m not out in Brum that often, need to get up there more though, some good opportunities. Yeah I’m starting to get away from that style a bit, definitely leaning towards more close up street photography focusing on humanity rather than graphical images and abstraction.
I spent the day in London on Saturday taking the 35 for a proper walk trying to get shots that I bought it for to get. It’s definitely a challenge to capture special moments but the more you go out the better chance right! I even want a 28mm now to fit more in the frame!! Never thought I’d day that haha. Maybe bump into you in Brum one of these days ✌🏻
@@timjamiesonphotos I agree, it is a challenge to say the least but as you say, the more you get out there, the better the chances. I found myself jumping for a 24mm lens myself the other day so I guess we are both stepping out of our comfort zone a little! I shall keep my fingers crossed that we get to take some candid shots of one another some day! xD
Durable post, Tim. Audio mix of ambient, music and voiceover works well. Next to last image (reflection abstract) and peach buyer in market my favs. Markets can be great for capturing candids, transactions, goods, and wary buyers - although sensory overload can be a challenge. Engaging merchants in a bit of complimentary conversation about their wares can help. A modest zoom 18-50mm on crop sensor mirrorless camera is my go-to set-up. Enough focal length flexibility to adjust to different situations. Cheers!

Mate I’m loving it! It’s tough though, to get the kind of shots I want, but I’m really enjoying a more traditional street photography approach, getting closer to people and looking for the oddities and magic moments of everyday life
So many great shots. I enjoyed the slower shutter speed shots and have wanted to try that technique.

Always struggle with shooting in markets - i find i inevitably come away with very similar, clichéd feeling images, but will keep at it and your POV has given me some new angles to try 🙌🏽

Hi Tim. Yet another interesting POV. I do like your shots and they have inspired me to look at what I am photographing. I usually use a 23 or 16mm on my X E3 for street/urban as it replicates the 24 and 35 I used back in the days of old when I shot film. Kind regards, John
Thank you John :). I was in London yesterday and I thought the 35mm would be wide enough but I found myself wanting even wider sometimes. Might look into it. I would really love to shoot on film, but it is just unaffordable now :(

Nice matey I'm there nearly every week for work it's my local city they had a big wheel there not long back too for some long exposures was cool like it better at night for some neon lights always wondered how a another person would shoot Birmingham good job pal I got to go to Leeds to that was fun thanks for the videos might try more abstract aproch next time 😀
I’ve always found it quite challenging to shoot in Birmingham but I’m only an hour away so need to try shooting there more often!

I too use a Fuji (X-T5) and have a variety of lenses with which to experiment. My current "taste" is to use my pancake 27 mm which let's me get in close while remaining relatively inconspicuous.
I default to B&W almost exclusively - maybe that reflects my photo vintage (I'm 74!).
I guess I've been influenced by the Vivien Maier biography which I'm reading just now.

I was out last night shooting street with a fast 35mm lens on an APS-C camera. I tried some slow shutter speed photos. I'm about to give up on reflections. I did get one good shot out of the 49 I made. I did find a cool new scene, hopefully next time I'll create a better photo out of that scene.
The more you go out and experiment the more you get shots you’re happy with in the long run, at least in my experience! Keep at it and happy snapping 📸
Thsnks for another nice video. Are uou adding the sound of a mechanical shutter while showing the images during the video, or are you actually using mechanical shutter. I have yhe same csmera and I am curious. Thanks again
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. I add in the sound, I usually shoot with electronic shutter in silent when I’m out and about :)
Love your vlogs, some questions do you focus on auto or other setting. Iso and aperture settings. Do they change at all during the day
Thanks a lot! I shoot most of the time on full manual and adjust my settings depending on the light :)
Great video as ever Tim, thanks. Do you find the f2 aperture enough during your photo walks, or are there times you feel the f1.4 would be useful? There's a big cost, size and weight difference, so I'm torn between the two!
Hey! Thanks a lot :). The only time when I think that f1.4 would be nice I’d for night street photography personally. But for me and my street photography f2 is more than enough as I’m usually shooting f8 or higher anyway (I like a deep depth of field in my photos). But if you do different genres of photography then 1.4 might be right for you!

Hi Tim, would you recommend buying body only camera plus a 35mm and a 85mm full frame equivalent prime lenses with bigger aperture (f1.4) instead of the 16/50mm kit lens? I would lose some range in mm (50mm for example) but would gain more the aperture. Any thoughts?
