I saw Sleuth on television when I was about 16 in the early 80s and was blown away. I have always wanted to see it again. I did see the remake, but it was a disappointment. Strange that the original is so hard to find. Sleuth reminds me a lot of one of my favorite Hitchcock-movies, Dial M for Murder, which is also criminally underrated

In an interview conducted in the early 80's Joe Mankiewicz, more or less, stated that he never felt he could surpass this film hence his retirement from films after he completed Sleuth.

I saw the movie in 1975 in Mallorca. So naturally it has Spanish subtitles. I will refrain from giving any of it away but I was at the edge of my seat. The performances were unparalleled. I lost count of how many times I’ve seen it but I can tell you this: I can recite every word without looking at a libretto. My all time favorite movie.

Nice article but please don't waste 88 min of your life on the unwatchable abomination that was the 2007 remake.
The 1972 original is in my top 3 ( along with Leaving Las Vegas and Glengarry Glen Ross ) and I'd love a chance to see the original stage play by Anthony Shaffer.

John Smith You're clearly my kind of guy. Sleuth (1972) and Glengarry Glen Ross are among my absolute favourite films of all time. The reboot of 2007 wasn't without some interest but it was anaemic in comparison to the original. I was lucky enough to see the stage play in the early 90s and it was fine but the sheer star power of the movie was impossible to match. It turned out I went to a wedding reception where the movie was filmed but, sadly, didn't know this important fact at the time. I'd have gone crazy, snooping around looking for traces of the film if I'd known.

I’m very fortunate to live near an actual video store (and an impeccably stocked and curated one at that) and I actually stumbled across the Sleuth DVD (Anchor Bay) while browsing the British 60’s/70’s section. Olivier, Caine, Mankiewicz, 1972… I was pretty shocked I hadn’t heard of it before. Then I saw it had an 8,0 on IMDB and was even more incredulous; I rented it immediately and without deliberation. What a treat… I was floored by the mansion setting, set design (Pinewood Studios I believe), dialogue/script, and tour de force acting from these two giants going head to head. It’s a crime this isn’t in print and available on Blu-ray (at least). Seems like something Kino Lorber Studio Classics would be all over. I’d even expect Criterion to restore and release this back when they consistently put out amazing titles (they’ve really been hit and miss the last few years). Anchor Bay was such an amazing DVD label and there’s several titles they released in the early 00s that still haven’t been upgraded to Blu-ray (Pin, I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname, etc.). Hopefully one of those labels gets wise.

@Tia Aaron - This is a dialogue driven movie with two actors, which means "Pay Attention To All You Hear". I remember the Oscar ceremony that year and Sleuth was in the running, but I guess it was just too genteel for the sex & violence crowd. I saw it on HBO in the '70's and every time I saw it scheduled in the years after. I won't watch the remake. A clip from it turned me away.

So l've probably seen this film at least 50 times and can recite the whole script from memory. It's in my top 5 and could well be my number 1 favourite and it's right up there with 12 Angry Men (1957). I was disappointed with Caine agreeing to do an awful remake. Olivier provides the laugh for Jolly Jack Tar and the portrait of Margueritte is Paul Newman's wife! The movie should have received all the Oscars that year except for Best Actress. The script, directing and music is spot on and Caine has never been better thanks to Olivier raising the bar!

I suppose this film may have fallen into a generation gap, but it was famous and frequently shown on TV when I was growing up. The only flaw is that the make-up isn't sufficient to complete the illusion created by an excellent performance. Olivier was very impressed with Caine during the filming. It's interesting that both actors are skilled at playing viscous, unsympathetic characters, so each is suited to that same role in the two adaptions.

I saw it for the first time in 1993 on Channel 4 in the U.K. Yeah, it’s always been a bit of a cult and obscure film, despite acclaimed director, actors and based on an award winning stage play. It’s a great little thriller. It was tricky to get hold of the VHS(at least in the U.K.) - managed to get it in the late 1990s.
The remake was okay, but sadly it didn’t reimagine itself enough. It was flawed. Which is a shame as I do think a remake could have been done of this film(especially having Caine in the opposite type of role to the original).

The Remake is interesting but not a scratch on the 72 original. But it has to be said, the first time I saw the 72 version, I saw the numerous twists and turns coming. I admit that in 72 this film could take people by surprise. But as we've had movies since that throw similar twists at you, perhaps that is why it is so predictable now. Nothing in the original took me by surprise. When watching the remake, because I had the first one in mind, it was able to surprise me. I didnt see them taking it in a homoerotic direction. Having said that I don't think its a good change. It sort of comes out of nowhere. Feels very tacked on. Like they wanted to do something so different from the original that it could set itself apart. But it really doesnt work. And besides the inspector sequence, Jude Law isnt very good in it. He's rarely good in anything. The original is a masterpiece, and I think its a very apt comparison you make between it and the films of Hitchcock.
